Teacher Summer Fellowships Announced, Spring Luncheon, Ultimate Frisbee View this email in your browser Announcing the 2015 Teacher Summer Fellows The Summer Fellowship program for BUSD teachers was created by the Schools Fund in 2012. The fellowship was created to encourage BUSD teachers to aspire to the highest levels of professionalism and creativity in their field, providing funds to support teachers to undertake a significant summer learning project of their choosing. We are happy to announce this year's Teacher Summer Fellows: Susanne Reed (Jefferson) will attend Harvard's "Closing the Achievement Gap: Strategies for Equity with Excellence" conference. Natalia Bernal (LeConte) will attend the Music Together Teacher Training in Santa Cruz. John Villavicencio (Berkeley High) will be researching audio, video, and written documents at the Hip Hop Archives at Cornell University. Kate WalshCunnane (Berkeley High) is going to take a course on writing strategies for English Language Learners at Sonoma

Gloria Muñoz-Hughes (Thousand Oaks) is taking 6 Thousand Oaksteachers to the 3-day "Teachers of Color Committed to Racial Justice"conference at San Jose State University.
2015 Spring Luncheon - Matt Tsang and Growing Leaders
The theme for our 2015 Spring Luncheon isExpanding Opportunity and this month we'respotlighting one of our three honorees, MattTsang (Willard).
Matt and his program were recently featured inEast Bay Express: "Tsang started working inthe Willard garden seventeen years ago as anAmeriCorps member. Since then, he's grownthe school's garden from a few haphazard
planter boxes to a model outdoor classroom for Willard's 550 students. He'sknown around school for his wide, easy smile, and for his lighthearted, jokingnature."
Matt Tsang's Growing Leaders students will be providing the little gemslettuce for our luncheon menu! They've just planted 200 plants to be readyfor May 8. The "Ultimate Way" to Support the Schools Fund
Semi-professional Ultimate frisbee team,the Dogfish, is making Berkeley its newhome. The team will be using BerkeleyHigh's Yellowjacket Field, and the Dogfishare dedicated to reaching out to their newBerkeley community.
To celebrate the team's first home game, the Dogfish have designated theSchools Fund as the game's Official Charity. So mark April 19 in yourcalendars—more details to follow!

In mid-February, the Berkeley PublicSchools Fund was surprised and honoredto receive a check for $99,110 from theFlorence Oaks Trust. The check follows aseparate gift from the Trust that arrived lastJuly, amounting to $50,000. The Florence Oaks Trust bequest to the Schools Fund will benefit andimpact countless music students in Berkeley public schools, and we areextremely grateful for this gift. Making the Schools Fund a beneficiary of yourretirement plan savings or—like Dr. Oaks—your will, enables you to createan educational legacy that costs you nothing now. "The purpose of thisprogram is to make sure that each child has a good supply of interesting,self-selected books that they can have for summer reading. If strugglingreaders can show improvement over the summer, they are more likely to besuccessful in the new school year."
