Tennessee Academic Standards -Visual Arts Standard 2.0 Structures and Functions Standard 4.0 Historical and Cultural Relationships Cross-curricular studies English and Writing IV About the Exhibition Scenic Impressions: Southern Interpretations from the Johnson Collection will be on view at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens from November 1st- January 3rd. This collection features a wide variety of artists who are either native southerners or foreign travelers to the south. Painters such as Wayman Adams, Elliott Daingerfield, James Herring, Hattie Saussy, Helen Turner, and Ellsworth Woodward display their interpretation of the American south’s landscapes and people. The exhibition features work from 1880-1940. By this time, Impressionism was widely accepted, and painters were moving more into Realism. The specific art movement associated with most of this collection is Barbizon, which is a more subdued way of painting landscapes. The colors are darker and the landscapes are simpler. Older works of art post date impressionism, and start to look more expressionistic. It will be fun to see if your students can see the differences as they move through the galleries. Helpful Terminology Background The part of the image that appears to be farthest from the viewer in the picture plane. Barbizon An art movement that is similar to realism and impressionism. Barbizon artists originated in France in the mid 19th century. They painted peasant life and natural lighting in a landscape. Expressionism A manor of painting which the artist uses distortion of objects, color, and composition to convey a mood. Foreground In a painting, it is the part of the image that appears to be closest to the viewer in the picture plane. Impressionism An art movement that originated in France in the late 19th century. Impressionist paintings are characterized by painterly brush strokes and vivid colors. Impressionists were more interested in capturing the feel, or “impression” of a scene rather than recreating it. Middle ground In a painting, it is the part of the image which appears to be in the middle of the in the picture plane. Horizon Line: Where the land meets the sky. In a painting, it is the imaginary line that everything
