Project Overview

Introduction to TechnoPC

In this project, students are acquainted with the computer. This introduction includes activities

that have students identify computer hardware, rules when using the computer, and the

method to turn the computer on and off properly. The area of concentration is on developing

fine motor skills needed to operate the mouse. Students learn how to click the mouse and

navigate it to objects on the screen to achieve the desired result, as well as how to click and

hold, click and drag, and double click the mouse buttons. Early learning software is introduced

to encourage the child to interact with the computer enthusiastically. Upon completion,

students receive a Computer Operator’s License that states they are able to use the computer

competently and safely.

This project guide is intended for instructing young students. The skills introduced and reviewed in

this project are essential for operating a computer. Teachers should expect that these students

are going to require assistance when completing some of the activities, as the skills are new.

Students complete the following tasks:

In session 1, students learn about the basic parts of a computer. Participation in an

Teaching Strategy

In this session, students are introduced to computer parts and mouse terminology. Explain the

scenario to students:

In this session, you learn lots about the computer. You

get to know the name of each computer part and

about what each part does. As well, you are

introduced to mouse terminology: point, click, and

double click.

You will practice these mouse skills by completing the

"Mousercise" activity, whereby you "point and click" on

computer parts. Afterwards, you apply your mouse

expertise by painting a picture. Throughout the

activities think about how each computer part is

helping you.

Assignment 1 What is a Computer?

In this assignment, students consider where and how they use the computer. If your students are

too young to read or write, consider asking the questions aloud.

Assignment 2 Parts of the Computer

In this assignment, students are introduced to the name and function of many computer parts.

Consider using the Computer Parts teacher resource for this activity. It is important to note that a

picture of a scanner, CD, microphone, and floppy diskette are also included in this resource. If

these are parts that students will not be using consider omitting them at this time.

If your students are too young to read or write, consider explaining the purpose of each part

and then asking each riddle aloud.

Assignment 3 Getting to Know the Mouse

In this assignment, students are introduced to the mouse. Show students a real mouse and

demonstrate the skills of pointing, clicking, and double clicking.

Assignment 4 Practice using the Mouse

In this assignment, students practice the skills of pointing, clicking, and double clicking. It is

essential that either Microsoft PowerPoint or the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer be installed for this

activity.

TECHNOPC SESSION 1

TECHNOKIDS INC. 1-3

Assignment 5 Paint a Picture

In this assignment, students paint a picture using the Pencil, Eraser, and Color Box in the program

Microsoft Paint. Consider having these flashcards available to help students identify the tools.

In this assignment, students use a "blank" canvas. The canvas has been set to 640 x 400 pixels. To

best view the file, your monitor settings should be 640 x 480 24-bit.

At the end of Assignment 5, students print their work. Establish a printing procedure for students

to follow. For example:

To avoid crowding of students around the printer waiting for their work, only the teacher

should retrieve these documents from the print tray.

Review the work to avoid incomplete work being sent to the queue.

Occasionally a session may end before all documents have completed printing. In this

instance inform the following class teacher of the printed documents pending and

collect them as soon as is convenient.

How does the Mouse Work?

Under the mouse is a ball or red light.

If your mouse has a ball, when you move the mouse, the ball

rolls. This tells the computer where to move the mouse pointer

on the screen.

If your mouse has a red light, when you move the mouse, the

light shines on the mouse pad. This tells the computer where

to move the mouse pointer on the screen.

The mouse has two buttons. These are called the left and right mouse buttons.

The buttons are used to click. This tells the computer what to do.

1. How did you use the monitor?

The monitor showed the picture being painted on the canvas.

2. How did you use the mouse?

The mouse let us "point" on tools and then "click" to select them.

It let us move the mouse pointer on the screen so that we could paint a picture.

This part was also used to "double click" to open the paint program.

By sending an instruction from Microsoft Paint, we were able to see our document in

printed form.

The tower has many important computer parts inside that help it run a program and send

instructions to and from the mouse, monitor, speakers, headphones, and printer.

5. How did you use the headphones or speakers?
