Tea Estates in Darjeeling

Plantation was started by the British tea company, Duncan Brothers in 1897 as an out division of Newlands Tea Estate. Phaskowa Tea Estate was passed into the hands of the Chamarias, the present owners in 1967.

This sprawling 660 acres of tea plantation stretches from Buxa Tiger Reserve on the east all the way to the banks of river Rydak that separates Bhutan from India. It now produces one of the best quality CTC and ORTHODOX teas in Dooars under the loving care of the owners and the dynamism of the present generation. The Chamaria family has been in tea for the last three generations and Mr. C.L. Chamaria, the patriarch of the family is considered an authority in the Tea business having written many books on the subject. Phaskowa has been their home for more than three decades and now they invite you to come and share the joy and solace this place has given them.

Phaskowa Tea Estate has forests that are a bird watcher's paradise and it is also the natural home of the Asiatic Elephant. You may witness a herd of elephants strolling down the mountains or even catch a glimpse of the Royal Bengal Tiger or a leopard at the Buxa Tiger Reserve. The endangered "One-Horned Asian Rhino" can be seen at Jaldapara and Gorumara and the chirping and whistling of unknown birds can be heard at Rashikbill Bird Sanctuary.

Rivers & streams, gushing and gurgling down the hills meet you at every mile or two. Here, the flora and the fauna break all records of biodiversity and in between these virgin forests are the settlements of small tribes like Mech, Rava, Oraon, Munda, Kora etc. and even the smallest surviving tribe, the Toto.

Besides the experience of wildlife sanctuaries and national parks, you can experience Raja Bhatkhawa Museum of Nature Integration, Sub-Himalayan treks, or simply lie back and relax at the bungalow and let your soul soak in the nature's splendour.

Your visit can include a brief one night stay at AMARPUR, our green leaf garden at Jalpaiguri, depending on your package and time of arrival.

On arrival at Bagdogra or NJP station drive through 65 km of scenic routes to reach the garden. This is the first garden in Dooars to practice multicropping.

The bungalow at Amarpur is home to a wide variety of birds. A sumptuous lunch followed by a leisurely walk through the garden will show you pineapple, rubber, vanilla, cocoa, coffee, areca nut, pepper and a wide variety of crops along with tea.

An early start in the morning will enable you to see the entire process of Rubber tapping and Manufacture.

Page 12: Tea Estate Heritage 01

You can take home with you garden fresh Amarpur or Phaskowa tea, coffee, black or white pepper and rubber as souvenirs. For those interested in RIVER RAFTING ADVENTURE on the Teesta, can be arranged from Amarpur.

Other options from this place are to proceed to the hill stations of Darjeeling, Mirik or Kalimpong. This is an ideal place for honeymooners to spend a couple of nights in splendid isolation.

Visit the quaint Bhutanese town of PHUENTSHOLING with its beautiful monasteries, THE MAJESTIC COOCHBEHAR PALACE now a heritage site, THE JALDAPARA FOREST SANCTUARY-with the almost extinct one-horned rhinos.

Or if you simply prefer to relax in Phaskowa, spend time sunbathing, browsing through books, playing board games, badminton or table tennis, or simply snoozing in the hammock.

Listen to the whispering of the jacaranda leaves. They seem to be telling you something.

Get regaled by spooky tales of the "Angrez Sahib" by our guide in front of a crackling fire. Sit back and marvel at the velvet night sky - the stars seem so close you'll want to reach out and touch them.

Accommodation & Facilities

When the British established their tea plantations in the mid-nineteenth century they quickly built comfortable bungalows designed to make life as pleasant as possible in what, was to them, a hostile and strange land. One of the main features of these buildings has given rise to their name – Chang bungalows. Chang in the local language means “raised on stilts” and the design served multiple purposes- both to keep the house cool by allowing fresh air to blow underneath and to keep water and animals out! All the tea gardens have at least one of these bungalows, most of which date back over one hundred years.

Since the bungalows have very limited accommodation you will not get the feeling of being in a big hotel. Rather, you will be treated more as an honoured guest with very personal and friendly attention.

At the Chang bungalows we provide services such as laundry, complementary newspaper, shoe-shine service, STD/ISD facility through conferencing, free High Speed Internet Wifi Access (at Mancotta Heritage Chang Bungalow), doctor on call and more. The kitchen caters for Indian, Continental, Chinese and local delicacies. All served with efficiency and a smile.

Mancotta Chang Bungalow

Though located a little away from Dibrugarh town, Mancotta Chang Bungalow is conveniently accessible from both Dibrugarh railway station and Dibrugarh airport. It is just 4 kms away from Dibrugarh railway station and 20 kms from Dibrugarh airport. It

Page 17: Tea Estate Heritage 01

has 4 AC rooms in the main bungalow and 2 Single Non AC rooms in the annexure building within the main bungalow compound. All rooms of the main bungalow are with attached bathrooms with provision of bath tubs and shower while the annexure rooms are equipped with showers only. The rooms are named after the tributaries of the mighty Brahmaputra - Siang, Dihang, Padma, Yamuna, Lohit & Manas.

Chowkidinghee Chang Bungalow

Chowkidinghee Chang Bungalow is just 2 kms away from Dibrugarh railway station and 15 kms from Dibrugarh airport. It has 3 rooms namely Tsangpo, Yarlung and Dibang.  All rooms have attached bathrooms with showers.
