Term Three has started extremely well and we have much to celebrate. It was with huge pride that I had the pleasure to be in the audience at the Kapa Haka regional competition earlier this term.

This was a wonderful celebration of our culture. Our students "lit up the stage" with their performance full of passion and precision. KAPA HAKA REGIONALS 2017

Kei aku iti , kei aku rahi, kei aku Tānerore, kei aku Hinerēhia Tēnā rā koutou katoa.

Te Kapa Haka o Tukua o Punga recently participated in this years Taitokerau Regional Kapa Haka competitions at Whangarei Girls High School. The competition was to find out which 3 kapa will represent Te Taitokerau Region at next years Kapa Haka National Competitions in Palmerston North 2018.

Te Kapa Haka o Tukua o Punga placed 3rd in the choral item (waiata tira) and 6th overall. We are proud of what these students have achieved with almost half the group being new to competitions and some new to kapa haka. Our students have worked extremely hard giving up weekends and Tuesdays,Thursdays and their holidays utilising every minute to prepare for the competitions. Some students gave up work commitments for the kaupapa.

Te Kapa Haka o Tukua o Punga would not be possible without the help of those who have worked tirelessly feeding, preparing costumes choreographing and just supporting the kapa to get to where we are and for that we are truly thankful. " Ko te amorangi ki mua ko te hāpai o ki muri"

On Set with

Armed with spades, manicured hands, gumboots and plenty of school spirit, THS staff, students and other “Blockees” braved the elements when we volunteered by planting, and dug to give the I HAVE A DREAM HQ a new and much improved face lift of the outside. Was an exciting event enjoyed by everybody.

SERVICES ACADEMY - LEADERSHIP ADVANCED

COURSE

On the 31st of July Tumai and I went on a five day advanced leadership course down in Mangawhai. We were mentored by some of the New Zealand Defence Force, along with seventeen other students from the thirteen northern service academies. This course was to help us become leaders of today within our service academy and everyday life. When we first arrived we were put into sections and to get to know each other we had to perform various icebreakers. These were the students we spent all week with. We were assigned with a section commander staff MacDonald. We learnt various leading skills including how to control and supervise a group of people. After this we had two days of assessments in which we had to put our new skills to the test. Every trainee was given a task that they had to lead from start to end. This included briefing, planning, delegation and taking control. The course meals were out of this world. Food included, roast, hamburgers and heaps of desserts. We were all strangers at the beginning and by the end of the course we were one big family.

We would also like to acknowledge the tutors Hakuiao Karetai -Mahanga and Tyson Stephens for helping tutor our kapa. Both are ex students of Tikipunga High School and members of Te Kapa Haka o Tukua o Punga and the quality of work they put into the kapa was outstanding. Thank you to all our families for all of their support. Ngāti Hau hapū Pēhiāweri Marae nei rā a~Te Kapa Haka o Tukua o Punga e maioha nei ki a koutou mō tō koutou nā manaaki nei i a tātou. We would like to thank Whaea Taua and Whaea Ngawai for always making this mahi worth every minute of hard work sweat and tears. Ko koe te tāhūhū o tēnei kaupapa rangatira nō reira horekau he mutunga o te mihi aroha ki a koe. You always make this kaupapa a pleasure to lead. To Whaea Ngāwai, thank you for being there and making sure that our tikanga are always upheld and for making sure we all fully understand this. And lastly to all the performers. You are all inspirational young people who have all made your whanau, community and school proud. Your accomplishments in kapa haka have been a huge undertaking: you have all worked hard and given your all. We are so proud of you and wish those leaving us at the end of the year all the best. "Kia whiti mai a Tamanui te rā, ka puta mai a imurangi e, pūata mai rā a Papatūānuku e" Nei rā te whakamānawa ki a koutou katoa. Nā mātou o te Tari Māori.
