What is evidence-based instruction?

The integration of professional wisdom with the best available empirical evidence in making decisions about how to deliver instruction

Program, methodology, and/or practice

Records of success – reliable and valid evidence indicates the instruction works

Ultimately the practitioner is responsible for determining whether or not the specific instruction or intervention WORKS

(Mather & Wendling, 2009; Whitehurst, 2002)

Goal of InterventionsInstructional Compensatory

Increase student’s performance through adding skills to the student’s own skill base

Compensate or “make up” for skills not currently possessed, allowing a student to complete a task at an expected performance level

Increase the skill base of the student

Increase performance without necessarily increasing the skill base of the student

Are uniquely matched to the student’s characteristics and needsWithout the intervention, the student’s ability to perform the task is dimished
