Members of the CVS Care-mark Logistics unit assem-bled at the Vero Beach Dis-tribution Center last month to launch a new hiring policy reserving 25 percent of CVS distribution center job open-ings nationwide for military veterans and their spouses.

The Vero Beach distribution center was the bellwether for the effort, dubbed Opera-tion Career Connections. The facility hired more than 30 newly-separated veterans in a year-old joint program with Workforce Solutions.

“It was a year ago Marcelo Dossantos, director of Work-force Solutions Business Services, approached us and asked us to participate in their effort to place 100 He-roes in 100 Days,” said Jim Ackerman, director of the Vero Beach facility which is also a multi-year Best Places to Work awardee.

100 Heroes in 100 Days was an effort by Workforce Solutions’ Veterans Program

staff to place 100 veterans into new jobs in under four months. Employers includ-ing CVS embraced the pro-gram, said Debby Coxwell, Workforce Solutions’ pro-gram director. “We exceeded our goal and placed 283 vet-erans in 100 days,” she said.

“Our enthusiasm for this pro-gram continues to grow and we have now added 31 veter-ans to our team,” Ackerman said, “twenty-one just this year, bringing considerable talent to our team.”

“Vero Beach paved the way for (veteran hiring policies) in our other 17 distribution centers,” said Ron Link, senior vice president of lo-gistics. The CVS Logistics unit, which includes the Vero Beach facility, plans to hire about 1000 veterans and mil-itary spouses, 25 percent of new hires, over the next three years, added Tom Christian, human resource manager for the Logistics unit. Vero Beach paved the way for Lo-gistics’ new policy, he said.

“And we’re hoping Logistics will pave the way for the rest of the company.”

“More than a million men and women will be sepa-rated from the military over the next five years,” said David Casey, vice president of workforce initiatives for CVS Caremark and a for-mer Marine. “We know that military veterans and their spouses strengthen our work-force.”

“You all make us proud,” agreed Link, addressing a group of veterans and other employees in the Vero Beach distribution center after the Operation Career Connec-tions announcement.

Link and Casey, in Vero Beach from CVS headquar-ters in Rhode Island, present-ed each veteran employed at the facility with a letter from CVS CEO Larry Merlo and a military-style “challenge coin,” a symbol of camara-derie.

Sebastian Turns Up the Heat with 7th Annual ‘Grill Out Night’

Hundreds stood in line at 30 local businesses that participated in the 7th Annual Grill Out Night throughout Se-bastian for a taste of grilled delights, fresh fruits and local talent who enter-tained visitors throughout the commu-nity with music, dunking machines, cornhole tournaments, live music, chair massages and more.

Perennial favorite location Sebastian River Medical Center outdid them-selves again this year with a buffet featuring cantaloupes that lines the parking lot.

The Sebastian River Area Cham-ber of Commerce held its 7th annual ‘Grill Out Night’ on Friday, August 2nd, 2013 from 5:30-8:00pm. Mem-bers of the community were invited to visit local businesses who offered free food, beverages, prizes, give-ways, coupons, and more.

Grill Out Night is the summertime version of ‘Light Up Night’ that the Chamber sponsors in December. Grill Out Night serves as a great way to en-courage our community to come learn about the local businesses during the summer as well as give the businesses a chance to show their appreciation for their clients, customers, and the com-munity.

The event also showcased a special Cantaloupe Contest, challenging the businesses to create unique and deli-cious cantaloupe dishes and beautiful cantaloupe carvings or displays!

Secret judges were sent around to savor all the cantaloupe goodies and to check out the creative sculptures. They judged based on Taste, Creativ-ity, and Originality.

And the winners are....

Best Taste was 3AM Deli for their unique and delicious samplings of cantaloupe delicacies, including can-taloupe tarts, chilled cantaloupe soup, and cantaloupe smoothies.

Best Creativity was Kim Ellis Insur-ance Services for their hilarious dis-play of “Cantaloupes in Disguise” featuring a cantaloupe snowman, can-taloupe caterpillar, cantaloupe Easter egg, cantaloupe alligator, and canta-loupe jack-o-lantern people.

Best Originality went to St. Eliza-beth’s Episcopal Church for their HUGE spread of cantaloupe treats in-cluding salsa, salad, smoothies, cake, sorbet, and mousse; and for their can-taloupe carvings/displays that includ-ed “Jonah and the Whale”, cantaloupe candle centerpieces, cantaloupe swan, cantaloupe flower basket and canta-loupe turtle.

Best Overall was Advanced Foot & Ankle for their awesome Tropical Cantaloupe display and spread that in-cluded cantaloupe carved underwater creatures. In addition – they offered face painting, sno-cones, and dunk tank!
