Dear Friends:
I am grateful to all within the TBT Community who have contributed to bring this weekend to fruition.
For ten years I have partnered with many outstanding volunteers who give of their talent, passion and
time and help shape TBT in profound ways. To each and every person who worked on this weekend and prepared us for a joyous and meaningful celebration of what we work together to create… thank
you!
It is a great honor and joy for me to be able to celebrate my ten years as rabbi alongside Eva Steen,
who is my dear friend and colleague. In Eva, TBT has been blessed with a learned and dedicated
volunteer who willing and enthusiastically carved out a significant portion of her life to serve our
community with wisdom, skill, enthusiasm and compassion.
In Pirke Avot we read: ―Be not like servants who work for their master only on condition that they
receive payment, but be like servants who work for their master without looking for any reward; and be filled with reverence for God.‖ (1:3)
I cannot think of a text that better describes Eva’s presidency, the years leading up and the months since she completed her term (and a half). Eva’s selfless nature, appreciation for the importance of
substantive learning, commitment to social justice and social action, unwavering desire to provide the
very best for our children through an engaging youth group program and high quality religious school,
and her vision for how to create and protect sacred community, all were key to her success in guiding TBT through three years of challenging, and yet thriving, times.
We are grateful to Eva’s family, her husband Ed, and children David, Adina and Hilary, for supporting her volunteer activities at TBT throughout the years and for their ongoing place as one of our most
giving and dedicated families. Each of them has contributed to TBT in unique and special ways, and
we appreciate you all.
Naomi, Joshua, Ari and Benjamin join with me in offering our thanks to Eva and the entire Steen
family for all you have done to enrich our lives along the way. All of TBT joins together in saluting
you, Eva, as our leader, role model and friend. Wishing you continued health, joy and blessing for many, many years to come.
One final word. It has been a privilege for me to serve as Temple Beth Torah’s rabbi for the past decade. When Naomi and I were looking for a congregation more than ten years ago, it was with an
eye towards finding a community that we want to join if we were moving to town for another purpose.
In TBT we have found people who share our values, passions, prayers, hopes and dreams. We
consider ourselves blessed to join with Joshua, Benjamin and Ari in being part of this sacred community. For all of your support and for welcoming us into your lives, we remain most grateful!
L’shalom,
Rabbi Brian K. Beal
EVA STEEN Although Eva lived in Brooklyn only until the age of 12, she considers herself a “Brooklyn Girl” through and through…with adolescence in Wantagh, Long Island thrown in for good luck! While in Brooklyn, Eva’s family were members of the Brooklyn Jewish Center, a conservative synagogue in a magnificent edifice on Eastern Parkway. She attended religious school, and became a Bat Mitzvah in 1967. Upon moving to Long Island a year later, Eva continued her Jewish education at the Wantagh Jewish Center, attending Hebrew High School through 12th grade as well as participating in the Prozdor School, a program at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York for high school students. Although deeply committed to her studies, she began to recognize the inequalities inherent in the manner in which women were recognized within the Conservative movement. Eva believes that this realization set the stage for her later commitment to the Reform movement. In 1977, Eva earned a BA (magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa) from Hofstra University in Elementary Education and Psychology, and then went on to earn an MA from New York University in 1979 in Counselor Education. It was during the summer between college and graduate school that Eva met Ed at a Jewish singles coffee house held in a VFW Hall in Massapequa. Ed was taking a break from studying for the NY bar exam and Eva wanted to check out the offerings. They chatted over coffee long after everyone else had left, and began dating soon after. Eva and Ed married in September of 1979, and immediately moved to Rockland County to be close to Ed’s job as a corporate patent attorney in Sterling Forest. Eva commuted every day for four years to downtown Manhattan for her Human Resources job with Merrill Lynch. Then, in September of 1983, Eva left the corporate world to become a full time mom to David. She continued to devote her energies to their children as Adina was born in 1987 and then Hillary in 1992. All told, Eva proudly and enthusiastically spent 15 years at home raising their three children. During those years, Eva also became involved in several community organizations, most notably the Mothers’ Center of Rockland and the PTA, first in the East Ramapo School District (president of the Summit Park Elementary School PTA) and then in Clarkstown (Recording Secretary and Treasurer of the Laurel Plains PTA). Eva often chose to rise to the ranks of leadership in community organizations, and always found great satisfaction in these roles. She has lived by the credo that “community service is the rent that we pay for living on this earth.” In 1993, when Hillary was just 6 months old, the Steen family moved from Hillcrest to New City, resigning as members of the Pomona Jewish Center and joining Temple Beth Torah. Within months of joining, Eva was asked to become a member of the School Committee. Over the next handful of years, Eva took on additional responsibilities and finally assumed the position of chairperson. Eva is grateful to Gail Kahn, TBT’s Educator at that time, and to Myra Glaser, who preceded Eva as Chair of the School Committee and who has served as Eva’s role model in all temple leadership positions. Along with her volunteer work, most notably as a counselor at the Volunteer Counseling Service in New City, Eva was gainfully employed for six years by the Jewish Federation of Rockland as Teachers’ Center Director of the Center for Jewish Education. Following that job, she worked as a Community Outreach Caseworker for Meals on Wheels of Rockland for three years. Eva joined the TBT Board of Trustees at the request of President Judith Kiss, and went on to become a Vice President under Presidents Harvey Taylor and Barry Schoenberg. In 2007, Eva proudly and humbly assumed the position of President of the congregation, and had the privilege of serving in that capacity for three years. Now that both Eva and Ed have retired, they are looking forward to travelling, snowshoeing, attending plays and concerts, drinking wine and other libations and otherwise enjoying what retired life has to offer. Indeed, in recent years Eva has become an accomplished potter at the Rockland Center for the Arts. Eva has often remarked that serving as President of TBT was the most rewarding and satisfying “professional” experience of her life. The skills she honed, the knowledge she gained and the sense of purpose she developed are only rivaled by her role as mother to her children. In addition, one of the most rewarding aspects of her role is the close collegial relationship she was privileged to gain with Rabbi Brian Beal and Cantor Sally Neff. Their guidance and patience paved her way, and she will be forever grateful.
RABBI BRIAN K. BEAL
We Are Blessed Rabbi Beal has been participating, inspiring, comforting, teaching, and involved at Temple Beth Torah since arriving in July 2001. The abounding energy, conviction and love for our Jewish community that he has brought to our synagogue have not diminished. In a short time, Rabbi Beal helped grow our programming into a dynamic array of offerings that meet the needs and
interests of congregants of all ages. His partnership with volunteer leadership, Cantor Neff, and our staff has resulted in a remarkably stable membership over his decade of service to the TBT community.
Coming to Temple Beth Torah, Rabbi Beal did not fail to jump in and start making contributions to the community right away. The Youth Program was entirely revitalized immediately, with programs from third grade through high school seniors. He also spends quality time in our Religious School interacting with our younger children through guest teaching, storytelling, and school-wide programming.
Rabbi Beal is the primary teacher for our 10th grade Confirmation class and 11th-12th grade Post-Confirmation Program. (Our 2011 Confirmation Class boasts twelve students. These are high school sophomores who have made a commitment to their religious education beyond their bar/bat mitzvahs! And our Post Confirmation class boasts another ten students.) Rabbi Beal’s interaction with each congregant is different depending on the person’s need, at the time. The lifecycle events
he conducts are warm, spiritually uplifting and inspiring – and each one is unique and personal. He apparently has unlimited days, spending time with those in need, welcoming those interested in joining our Temple, participating with volunteers in meetings and other activities, and leading our religious services.
A great doorway to TBT, Rabbi Beal welcomes interfaith families, reaching out to all who wish to be active in our community. He also studies with those contemplating conversion, offers a private pre-marital program for each couple he marries, and provides a listening ear in times of need. Rabbi Beal is instrumental in executing TBT’s vision for making our corner of the world a better place and continues to
support TBT’s active social action and social justice programming. Working alongside his wife and others to collect essential non-perishables, he helped deliver a 70-ft trailer of goods to Katrina survivors. He also engaged our congregation to participate in the CASH program that secured hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax credits for Rockland’s working poor. He brought TBT into the Helping Hands Coalition to house the homeless in our building a few days a month. Rabbi Beal also connected TBT with the New Israel Fund as a lead partner in one of their major initiatives. Rabbi Beal is dedicated to the importance of lifelong learning. His Adult Education mini-courses are well attended and he is
a celebrated teacher of Taste of Torah, held before our Saturday morning Shabbat service. His rabbinic thesis, entitled: “Judaism and the Twelve Steps”, provides opportunities for him to work one-on-one with Jews recovering from addiction, present at the Union for Reform Judaism’s National Biennial, and to offer expertise to colleagues and organizations who call upon him for support.
Rabbi Beal does not confine his activities to Temple Beth Torah! He recently accepted the position of Chaplain of the Valley Cottage Fire Department and is a coach of the 8U Clarkstown Stars travel baseball team. He served as chair of the Nyack Interfaith Clergy Association and sat on ethics committees at Nyack Hospital and United Hospice of Rockland. Through volunteer activities and speaking activities, Rabbi Beal has been involved with, and continues to provide ongoing support, to countless Rockland not-for-profits such as JCC, Federation, Volunteer Counseling Service (VCS), Rockland Family Shelter, People-to-People, Jawonio, NAMI-FAMILYA of Rockland County, Nyack Hospital and others.
Whew! All that, and Rabbi Beal is a dedicated and loving husband and father, too. Naomi Adler, Rabbi Beal’s wife, is President and CEO of United Way of Westchester and Putnam and previously served as CEO of United Way of Rockland. This connection has furthered some of TBT’s major charitable efforts. Naomi is actively involved in Temple life as a choir member, religious school parent, and other general member activities.
Rabbi Beal and Naomi’s three children, Joshua, Benjamin and Ari, are also involved in Temple life. The congregation loves seeing the boys at Temple, running around; happy, excited about the activity they’re participating in; and also when they join their father for the closing prayers at Family Services. Joshua, Benjamin and Ari are the joys of Rabbi Beal’s and Naomi’s l ives. We are all blessed…
Congratulations to Eva Steen and
Rabbi Beal for all their wonderful work —
And to all of the volunteers at Temple Beth Torah who work
so hard every day.
