The storage market is changing. The evolution of the solid-state drive (SSD) is transforming enterprise storage environments at a rapid pace. Vendors are scrambling to stake their claim in the market while meeting customer requirements. Customers are demanding more performance and functionality from their investment. Traditional enterprise storage vendors are selling SSDs, but new drive manufacturers are eating away at their market share. Opportunities abound, but the market is young, and there are few best practices to help guide customers and suppliers.

TBR’s Computing Practice recently finished a survey of 350 IT professionals to help both groups answer the questions:

• How are perceptions of SSD adoption shifting in the enterprise?
• How are skyrocketing adoption rates reflecting the demands of a larger number and variety of workloads?
• Which vendors will capitalize on this trend and grab the leader spot in this market?

Widespread SSD adoption is well underway as enterprises seek to boost datacenter storage performance, efficiency and reliability

Almost 74% of those surveyed

use SSD technology in at least

one form factor.

SSDs are in use in many

industries, not just those that

require high-performance

storage for their environments.

Datacenters are now using

SSD products for almost

every enterprise workload.

Once organizations try SSD, they

are hooked. Most adopters

indicate plans to buy more SSD

in the coming 12 months.

SSD’s impact on vendors, customers and IT environments continues to shape the storage landscape

Storage vendors continue to

expand their SSD portfolios

with discrete SSD products as

well as hybrid disk/SSD

solutions.

Storage customers continue

to integrate SSDs into their

storage infrastructures to

take advantage of the

technology’s inherent speed.

IT environments grow

increasingly nimble, as

SSDs help to improve the

speed of traditionally

slow, burdensome

workloads.

SSD’s continued adoption by enterprises depends on vendor actions to illustrate this technology's maturity and demonstrate its value

Vendors need to show that SSD

reliability is perceived by

customers as a strength.

Vendors need to highlight product

differences to gain a foothold in this quickly expanding

market.

Vendors need to reflect the

technology’s maturity in their

go-to-market efforts.

SSD comes of age SSD: Reliable Competitive market
