DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in reference to your recent column about training a “cool city pooch.” You’re forgetting that many cities have laws about tying up your dog to lampposts. Unless that “cool pooch’s” owner wants to pay a fine, he’d better forget about doing that. -- S.Y., via e-mail

DEAR S.Y.: That’s a good point: Pet owners should check city ordinances ahead of time before taking their pets out on a stroll. Are pets completely not allowed inside businesses by

Leash Laws Are Sometimes Vague

city law, rather than at the business owner’s discretion? Can you tie their leash to a lamppost, bike stand or outdoor table? Can a dog be unaccompanied or off leash at any time?

As a counterpoint, many cities’ leash laws are sometimes a bit vague on this point. Almost all require that owners keep their dogs under control at all times, and on a leash everywhere except in designated off-leash areas. Municipal buildings and schools are usually off-limits to non-service dogs, period.

Some cities, and an increasing number of businesses, are making more allowances for dogs. For example, some grocery stores and a few department stores in my area, like Home Depot, allow small dogs inside as long as they stay on a leash beside their owner and are well-behaved. However, it is up to the pet owner to learn what the rules are in the businesses he or she wants to frequent.

The most important point, beyond what’s written in leash laws or by businesses, is that pet owners be good citizens, and make sure their dog is safe and under their control when out and about.

September 2013 Events & Happenings

• It was noted wit Ambro-se Bierce who made the following sage observa-tion: “All are lunatics, but he who can analyze his delusion is called a phi-losopher.”

• When the famous “Hollywood” sign was constructed in 1923, it read “Hollywoodland.” It was an advertisement for a new housing development and was expected to be in place only about a year and a half. The sign became such a recognizable symbol of the new film industry in Los Angeles that it has been refurbished and rebuilt as necessary for 90 years.

• In January of 2004, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of maggots as a medical device for cleaning wounds.

• If you’re planning a trip to Laramie, Wyo., you might want to make a pilgrimage to the Ames Pyramid. At the end of a 2-mile dirt road, in the middle of featureless pastureland, you’ll find this 60-foot-tall monument seemingly plunked down at random. The pyramid was built in 1882 near a line of the Union Pacific railroad and in honor of the railroad’s financiers. It was thought that the monument would be a welcome distraction to railroad passengers traveling through the plains of Wyoming. The decline of railroad

travel, however, caused many tracks to be removed, including the line that ran by the pyramid. Now only cows are left to admire this relic of the industrial age.

• The 1979 horror movie “Alien” has become a cult classic, but not many people realize that it was originally titled “Star Beast.”

• • •Thought for the Day

“Hollywood is a place where they’ll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and 50 cents for your soul. I know, because I turned

down the first offer often enough and held out for the 50 cents.” -- Marilyn Monroe

9Q: I have a clock that is designed to look like a fireplace.

When it’s plugged in, an element looks like a real burning fire. This is an old clock, and I wonder where I can sell it. -- Bernie, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: Although I am not certain what company made your clock, I found two listed on eBay, one for $35, one for $45. Ones that I have spotted in shops generally are priced for less than $50. This is for clocks in fairly good shape and in working condition. To find a buyer for your clock, I suggest you show it to antiques and clock dealers in your area.

• • •Q: I have a collection of 54 Lenox carousel horses, and

an additional 16 by Thomas Kinkade. Where can I sell them? -- Tom, Tiro, Ohio

A: I suggest you post them on eBay. This will showcase them to buyers throughout the country. Incidentally, Wal-ter Scott Lenox and Jonathan Coxon founded a ceramic company in Trenton, N.J., in 1889. When Coxon left The Ceramic Art Company in 1906, the name was changed to Lenox. In 1917, its line was chosen to be the official china of the White House. Its superior dinnerware made the name Lenox famous throughout the country.

• • •

Q: I have a Denver ceramic bowl that was made in about 1915. What can you tell me about this company? -- Jacob, Omaha, Neb.

A: Frederick J. White and his son, Francis, started a small pottery company in Denver in about 1893. They used local clay to produce earthenware, and within a few short years had expanded their operations to include more artistic pieces, some marked “Den-ver Art Pottery,” while oth-ers were simply “Denver.” Production of this company is extremely collectible. For example, a bowl with a tree design recently sold at auc-tion for $650.

• • •Q: I have a Vargas calen-

dar from 1949 that is com-plete and in fairly good con-dition. I have been offered $150 for it, but wanted to check with you first. -- Steve, Grand Junction, Colo.

A: Take the money and run. According to the sources I checked, your 1949 Vargas

Fire Clock

calendar is worth about $75.

• On Sept. 27, 1540, in Rome, the Society of Je-sus -- a Roman Catholic missionary organization --

receives its charter from Pope Paul III. The first Jesuits took vows of poverty and chastity, and made plans for the conver-sion of millions to Catholicism.

• On Sept. 23, 1875, Billy the Kid, born William Henry Mc-Carty, is arrested for the first time after stealing a basket of laundry. He broke out of jail and roamed the American West, eventually earning a reputation as an outlaw and murderer, with a rap sheet that allegedly included 21 murders.

• On Sept. 28, 1918, a Liberty Loan parade in Philadelphia prompts a huge outbreak of the flu epidemic in the city. By the time the epidemic ended, an estimated 30 million people were dead worldwide. The most likely origin of the 1918 flu pandemic was a bird or farm animal in the American Mid-west.

• On Sept. 26, 1928, work begins at Chicago’s new Galvin Manufacturing Corp. In 1930, Galvin would introduce the Mo-torola radio, the first mass-produced commercial car radio. (The name had two parts: “motor” evoked cars and motion, while “ola” derived from “Victrola” record players.)

• On Sept. 25, 1965, the Kansas City Athletics ageless wonder Satchel Paige started a game against the Boston Red Sox. The 59-year-old Paige, a Negro League legend, proved his greatness by giving up only one hit in his three innings of play. He was the oldest pitcher ever to play a game in the major leagues.

• On Sept. 24, 1988, Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson runs the 100-meter dash in 9.79 seconds to win gold at the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. Johnson’s triumph, however, was short-lived: He tested positive for steroids three days later and was stripped of the medal.
