Factors Used to Classify

Common ancestry= Fossil record may show relationships

Physical similarities= Very similar body forms in different species

Similar biochemistry= DNA and protein analysis

Embryonic development= Similarities in stages of developing embryos

Three Domain System

Living things fall into three broad groups called domains.

Domain Archaea ( kingdom archaebacteria) Domain Bacteria (kingdom eubacteria) Domain Eukarya (eukaryotes)

This includes kingdoms Protista, Plantae, Fungi, and Animalia.

KINGDOM:ARCHAEBACTERIAMAY BE Directly descended from first organisms on Earth.

UNICELLULAR PROKARYOTES Cell Membrane; no nucleus Genetic Properties differ from ALL other life

Live in harsh environments such as Sulfurous Hot Springs, very salty lakes, and ice cores.

KINGDOM EUBACTERIA

They are UNICELLULAR PROKARYOTES. (Everyday bacteria)

Both autotrophic and heterotrophic.

Includes disease-causing bacteria such as tooth decay or food poisoning.

Both reproduce by binary fission

E. coli

Staphylococcus

KINGDOM PROTISTA

More than 50,000 species

Unicellular and a few simple multicellular EUKARYOTES.

Organism “junk drawer”

Many are aquatic.

Includes Euglena, Amoeba, and algae.

KINGDOM FUNGI

Multicellular

Cell walls that contain a material called chitin.

Heterotrophic - obtain their nutrients by releasing digestive enzymes into a food source.

Fungi act either as decomposers (saprophytes) or as parasites in nature.

KINGDOM PLANTAEEukaryotic, multicellular and autotrophic

Cell walls that contain cellulose.

Cells specialized for photosynthesis, the transport of materials, and support.

Kingdom Plantae includes mosses, ferns, cone-bearing plants, and flowering plants.

KINGDOM ANIMALIAMulticellular, eukaryotic, and heterotrophic.

Usually mobile organisms. Except sponges, barnacles, etc.

Fish, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, and mammals.

This Kingdom also includes sponges, jellyfish, worms, sea stars, and insects.
