Anatomy of TasteFour primary types of papillae:

• Vallate (or Circumvallate)- large, near back of tongue

• Foliate- on side of tongue

• Fungiform- larger, ‘mushroom’ shaped- “buds”

• Filiform- cover majority of tongue and

does not contain taste buds- used for mechanical grinding
