Task 9 Formal Proposal By Shanice Spencer

Page 2: Task 9 formal proposal

Title of magazineI have chosen to name my magazine sync for many reasons. One being it is short, simple and catchy and is easily related back to music as due to new technology you ‘sync’ your music onto iPods/iphones etc. Also sync defines everything coming together as one working together at the same time, at the same speed, or in the same way which is how hip-hop music is produced and what it’s all about.

Choice of genre

I have chosen the hip-hop genre for my magazine. I choose this as I already have general knowledge on the artists and hold a personal interest in the music of the genre itself. I am also influenced by this genre as it reflects my personality and style as it’s what I've been brought up on. Also from reading what's currently on the market magazine wise for this genre such as vibe and billboard, I know what's expected from a hip-hop magazine and due to my general interest I can relate to my target audiences needs.

My target audience The stereotypical audience for a hip-hop magazine is

afro-caribbean males. However I am choosing to challenge this as I know that this is not accurate through having white male friends that are also very intertwined with the hip-hop style.

I'm challenging this by allowing my magazine to be open to both genders ranging from age 16-21. I have choosen this age range due to the sexual nature that music magazines tend to have.

I have also decided to use a white female on the cover of my magazine rather than a afro-caribbean male as this expands on the idea of ranging the audience and steers away from stereotypes.

Initial ideas for front cover I am planning to use a medium shot of a female artist. I want

her stance to be like the magazines featured bellow as it deems to be a popular pose. I would like her in quite plain and simple attire contrasting with her dark features, long hair and red lips. I choose to have her with red lipstick as red connotes danger and seduction and is also known for both love and passion. Recent studies also state that red makes you look more attractive.

I want her hair covering one half of her face to make all the attention fall on her connoting mystery and lust.

I want the colour scheme to be very soft with grey/silvers to give a kind of platinum feel of wealth and power. Also standard black to connote power and sophistication and white to connote natural beauty purity and simplicity emphasised with the main image. They are also very neutral colours appealing to both genders.

Initial ideas for my contents page

I am planning to use a long shot of a female artist. I want her to look very strong, dominant and sexy contrasting with the front cover.

I want her in white and neutral looking clothes sticking to this natural beauty connotation. Conversely I want her legs out in an upwards position with heels to highlight sophistication and once again matriphocal dominance (example shown in image bellow).

I also want to stick to the same colour scheme of grey/silvers black and whites.I however notice I may have to use colourdepending on the background the image is taken in to make the text stand out butnot harshly contrasting with the image.

Initial ideas for my article I am planning to do lots of action long shots to

create a strip of photos dominating most of the page as shown in the image bellow.

I also want the colour scheme to stay the same as throughout the magazine maintaining structure.

I'm going to create my own article based on the kind of stories that appeal to young people inciting into a celebrities life. I'm focusing on the idea of interviewing a female artist on her recent ‘dramatic split up’ with her husband.

Initial ideas for photographs

I want to maintain ‘range’ throughout my magazine and after checking the requirements I see it is more practical if I use three different images of three different people. I want all three photos to represent three different elements, natural, sexual, and private life. Different outfits, different styles and different surroundings. Keeping into account there representing upcoming stars and the future generation of hip-hop. I'm using shot medium and long shots as there the most frequently used in music magazines in general and I want the focus to be maintained mostly on the image.
