Task 9 – Formal Proposal

Explanation for choice of genreI have chose to produce a hip-hop/rap music magazine for the following reasons. I have been listening to this genre of music myself since I was around 7 years old and love the music and generally enjoy it. Also the hip hop genre is popular and a lot of people also enjoy this type of music. However for my magazine I aim to produce something new and innovative that is different from magazines already out and published.

Title of magazine you wish to produce

I wish to name my magazine ‘OLDvNEW’, I have chosen this because in my research I found that all hip hop and rap music fans like to read about both old and new music and news. It is also suitable for the target audience as it is short and memorable.

Target audience

The target magazine for my magazine is of the age 16-22, with 60% being males and 40% being female readers. These readers are not willing to pay over £2.00 for the magazine so fall into the B,C1 social category. This is relevant as younger audiences tend to go to more gigs and concerts, this will help me when choosing the articles I will feature in my magazine. The readers are also interested in music news and varied artists. In my research I found that the target audience like to read about different artists not everyone picked one artist, the results proved that each reader liked different artists.

Front page ideas

My initial ideas for the cover are to have one striking image, that will attract the reader, the image should be one of the artist that will be featuring in the article this makes the cover look appealing to those who are interested in that particular artist. However this image will not interfere with the masthead as I believe the masthead should be noticeable. In my research I found that out of a choice of three magazine covers the one with less writing and one main image got higher marks out of 10 than the other two.

The mise-en-scene will relate to my target audience and the music artist, this is to help create the feel of hip hop culture. I will be using the selected colours purple, black and white as these were the most popular from my questionnaire results.

Contents page ideas

My ideas for my contents page are to use the same masthead font as the cover to bring an image and ethos to the magazine. I will be using an image of a different artist and under this will have editorial text. This will enable the reader to get an insight into what the magazine includes. I would also like to include subheadings under which relating articles will be listed, this will help readers to navigate through the magazine easily.

I would also have a subscription offer on the contents page to offer to the readers, because from my questionnaire I found that 30% of the people asked (20) would subscribe to the magazine, even though a majority said no the small amount that will subscribe have the option to.

Double page spread ideas

For my double page spread i would like to have one or two images of the artist who is being interviewed and then along the bottom and the second page, this will make the page interesting and different. I would also like to include a by line underneath the image to give picture credits and also to include a mini summary of who the artist is and what they are going to be talking about.

Ideas about photographs

I would like to have a close up image of my artist for the cover as I have found that this is found interesting by readers. I also have found that a lot of hip hop magazines use these types of photographs. The photographs should entail a hip hop culture to them so that they fit in well with the magazine as a whole.

Ideas about photographs pt2

I would like the images for the double page spread to be the artist in an environment that is relatable to the audience. To do so I will need to take a number of images that I can chose from. I need to ensure that when taking the photographs that the artist looks in a way in which the reader will find unique.
