“The best thing we can teach our children

is how to teach themselves”

(Intellectual 11)

Page 2: Task 11 - about Wikis

“Wiki is a Hawaiian term meaning „fast‟.”

“A Wiki is a combination of a Web site and a Word

document.”

“ Wiki helps us capture a community‟s knowledge and

collect it into a manageable format, making it accessible to

everyone.”

(BELL, 2009, p. 143)

Page 3: Task 11 - about Wikis

“Wikis are Web sites that anybody can edit, if the moderator

desires.”

“Wikis are easy to use so you

can create or edit the actual

site contents without any

special technical knowledge or

tolls.”

(BELL, 2009, p. 144)

Page 4: Task 11 - about Wikis

“A wiki has the ability to keep track of the history of a

document as it is revised.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 144)

If someone makes changes to the content, it becomes the

current version. A wiki receives many contributions from

other people.

Page 6: Task 11 - about Wikis
Page 7: Task 11 - about Wikis

“Collaboration is people working together (often with a

common goal) to build one thing, such as a wiki page with

one understanding.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 145)

Page 8: Task 11 - about Wikis

“Wiki has two modes, read and edit. The default mode is the

read state, which means that the wiki page looks just like a

normal Web page.”

“If you want to edit the wiki page, you must access the wikis

edit mode.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 145)

Page 9: Task 11 - about Wikis

“Incorporating wikis into the curriculum promotes a

constructionist style of learning in which learners build new

ideas or concepts on their current/ past knowledge and in

response to the instructional situation. It implies the notion

that learners do not passively absorb information but

construct it themselves.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 145)

BLOG X WIKI

“Blogs are designed for one-to-many communication.”

Other users aren‟t able to change the post made

by another person, they can only make comments.

“A wiki has a far more open structure than a blog

and allows others to change what another person

has written.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 146)

Page 11: Task 11 - about Wikis

WIKI X FORUM

“Forums (Discussion Boards) are excellent tools for letting

many users ask questions and letting many people answer.”

“Wiki are excellent for collaboration. If you want to let

others collaborate, add files, suggest links, and create a

document that is comprehensive and up-to-date.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 147)

WIKINOMICS

“ „Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything’ is a book by

Tapscott & Williams, first published in December 2006. It explores how some

companies in the early 21st century have used mass collaboration (also called

peer production) and open-source technology, such as wikis, to be successful.”

“Wikinomics is based on four new ideas: openness, peering, sharing, and acting

globally.” - “Wikipedia is an example of peer production.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 147-148)

Page 13: Task 11 - about Wikis

“Wikipedia is an open-source encyclopedia that lets anyone

create or edit an article, created by Jimmy Wales in 2001.”

“Since anyone can make changes to it,

Wikipedia often receives criticism

concerning its accuracy.”

(Bell, 2009, p. 148)

“Imagine a world in which every single

person on the planet is given free access to

the sum of all human knowledge. That's

what we're doing.”

WIKIPEDIA

WIKIPEDIA SELECTION FOR SCHOOLS

“The concern of having young children accessing Open Source

material on the Internet has caused some groups to take an

alternative action from filtering Wikipedia in its entirely.”

SOS Children (UK) and the Wikipedia Foundation have

launched a DVD which contains the content of a 15-volume

encyclopedia. (Bell, 2009, p.150)

Page 15: Task 11 - about Wikis

•* WIKIBOOKS “a collection of open-content

textbooks, which includes textbooks,

annotated texts, instructional

guides, and manuals.” (Bell, 2009, p. 150)

* WIKISOURCE “a free library of source texts which

are in the public domain or legally available for free

redistribution.” (Bell, 2009, p. 151)

Page 16: Task 11 - about Wikis

*WIKIVERSITY “is a collection of learning materials

and activities that are being collaboratively developed in

wiki format. It hosts and develops free learning materials

for all groups.”

•* FREE HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE TEXT “is a project

that aims to provide free science and mathematics

textbooks for grades 10 to 12 science learners in South

America.” (Bell, 2009, p. 153)

WIKI AS A COLLEGE TEXTBOOK

“A wiki has become a primary learning tool, replacing

textbooks and allowing for improved collaboration among

students in at least one Boston College classroom.”

(BELL, 2009, p. 153)

BENEFITS AND USES OF WIKIS IN SCHOOL

COMMUNICATION

“Wikis can be used for board, school, and classroom

communication for families, classrooms, sports teams,

community groups, and book clubs.”

Students can use a wiki to share research and data while

working on a group project .

(Bell, 2009, p. 155)

Page 21: Task 11 - about Wikis

CONCLUSION

“Information literacy and communication is not a matter of

knowing what source to use, but of being able to decide what

source to use, based on the goal at hand.”

“Using a wiki in a school and within a classroom improves

communication and reinforces the constructionist style of

learning.”

( Bell, 2009, p. 158-159)

Page 22: Task 11 - about Wikis

On March 15, 2007, wiki entered the online Oxford English

Dictionary.

Some people claim Wiki also stands for "What I Know Is”, but

this is a false backronym.

Enthusiastic fans of famous series and films have created many

wiki pages to gather their knowledge about their favourite

programmes. These include Lostpedia (about ACB‟s series

Lost), Wookipedia (about Star Wars), and many others.
