Photography Applications

(Dan Bell)

Page 2: Task 1

(Advertising and promotional)

Is the photography in which the end result is supposed

to promote a business venture.

This Russian beer advert shows wheat fields and beer has a lot of wheat in it. This is good because it shows it’s brewed locally. It has a bright sky in the background because you usually associate drinking beer outside with summer. I think, this advert is most likely to have been made on such programs as Photoshop, this would have helped to put the large beer on the same image as a wheat field and a bus.

This Nike advert has a picture of Wayne Rooney in it which will attract attention because of his fame and reputation in football. They have used the England colors on him as most people from England support the national team so it will stop people from thinking it’s biased to 1 club team.

This car avert is basically all blue and black background to go with the car. They also have used something to add a canny bit of shine to the car. They have put the fact that the car has won an award at the top of the page.

Page 3: Task 1

They have used a catchy slogan to get attention from the readers

“There’s a McDonalds for everyone” will be eye catching because it will assure them that there will be something there for that specific person

They will have used glue and many other things to make the burger look more appealing than it actually is

Plain background to back up the picture of the burger and the text

Page 4: Task 1

Fashion photography

Is defined by the lighting and style of the photograph. It is not always defined by the clothes on show, sometimes they’re wearing very little or nothing at all.Photos 1 and 2 were taken with a wide lens, this is apparent because you can see a lot of the background in these photos. The final photo however is long lens because the woman takes over the majority of the picture leaving very little background room.

the lighting varies depending on what situation you are in, some shots will be in a studio so will be artificial lighting whereas photos outside will be ambient, one of these photo is artificial but the other two are ambient.

In photo number 1 and number 3 have had post production to give a very glossy look to the photos.

Page 5: Task 1

This photo will have had post production taken place. This is to give the woman a more glossy/glamorous look

The dusk sky type background contrasts well with the woman and what she is wearing

All of this photo has a red/burgundy effect.

There will have been full control in this photo, the taker would have told the client to pose in that way

Page 6: Task 1

(Photojournalism)Photojournalism is communicating news by photographs.

It can be paparazzi celebrity photographs, war photos and real life events.

There is no form of editing in photojournalism so all of the lighting will be ambient.

On most occasions the photos will be taken with a wide lens but the 1st photo that appears is long.

There has been no form of post production in the second and third photographs but it is very possible that the first photograph has been edited to make the smoke look more apparent.

Street photography links in well with photojournalism, Garry Winogrand is a very good example of this. He was a street photographer in the United States, mainly in New York during the 1950’s and 60’s.

A present photojournalist is Neil Smith who is a sports photographer in North East England. He was recently announced as the official Gateshead FC club photographer.

These photos can be used in newspapers, magazines, flyers and even on TV to present the news and sport.

All of these photos are observational because they are real life events taking place.

Page 7: Task 1

There will have been no post production in this photo as in photojournalism you don’t need to change anything

Would have waited until the goal celebration to take the photo to make it a good shot.

It was taken with a low aperture, you can tell because it is just Falcao who isn’t blurry

I like the way that they have managed to include the stadium’s positive reaction compared to one Everton negative reaction

Page 8: Task 1

(Portrait)Port where you take a photo of someone, it shows their facial expressions and personality in the mood of the pictures, for example if it’s a picture of a man not smiling with very pale colours such as grey in the background then you can tell he is a very serious person.

A good example of a portrait is in picture 1. This is a very serious looking man he looks like someone who is at their job, however the 2nd picture is a brighter and happier photo which is in colour. The 3rd photo is old fashioned portrait, these were often not taken by camera they were painted.

The lens that has been used for these photos will be long because they are all very much focused on the faces and nothing else.

These photos will be controlled because you have actually told the person to pose that way.

Photos 2 and 3 will be ambient light because they’re both taken outside therefore they can use the natural light from the sun. However we cannot be sure with photograph number 1 as it is in black and white, if this photo was taken a studio then chances are the lighting will be artificial.

In the first and third photos there will have been no post production but in the second photo there is a good chance that there has been. As you can see the eye colour is significantly brighter than in real life, they have also given her face a more glossy look.

Joseph Pertzval was the inventor of the “Pertzval portrait lens.” He was also a mathematician, inventor, and a physicist. He was a Slovakian who was born on January 6th 1807 and died on September 19th 1891 at the age of 84.

Paul Turnbull is a current portrait photographer who is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. He takes photos at weddings and many other types of events.

Page 9: Task 1

Dark background to contrast with the color of his hair, beard and clothes

Controlled picture, they will have told him to pose like that

They may have used post production to remove red eyes and make them a natural color

The lighting will be artificial

Page 10: Task 1

(High street studio)Is photos people collect in public places that don’t necessarily represent the

presence of it or the urban environment.

The lens will be a long one as it there is very little background room behind.

Each and every one of these photos will be controlled because the photographer will have told the models to do a certain type of pose.

The lighting will be very artificial because it is in a studio with a screen.

Post production will have taken place in case any person has has any facial features that they are not too happy about showing.

Venture is a photography studio based in Leeds, West Yorkshire. They also have a studio in York.

These photos will be collected by the clients who have been used to star in the photos. They could also be used for the galleries on the official website.

Page 11: Task 1

Post production may have taken place incase somebody had a feature on their face that they didn’t want showing

Controlled photo

The lighting will be artificial.

They all look like they have a happy/positive attitude in the picture

Page 12: Task 1

(Architecture)Architectural photography is the photographing of buildings and similar structures that are both aesthetically pleasing and accurate representations of their subjects. For architecture you would use a wide lens to get the full image in and make things look bigger than they actually are.

These photos will be observational because they were in a public place and were just taken the way they were found. I think that the lighting in these photos will be ambient because 2 of the photos are

There is a lot of perspective in these photos to make the buildings look taller and the staircase look longer than they actually are.

A person who is famous for these sorts of photos is Henry Fox Talbot who lived in the 1800’s.

Somebody who is currently doing this type of photography is James White who is based in Manchester, he has 20 years of experience. The second photo on here is one he took the second photo on this slide

These photos could be used for galleries on websites and possibly in magazines.

Page 13: Task 1

They have taken this from directly underneath the building to make it look much higher than it really is.

Used a really wide lens to get the whole building in

The lighting will be ambient as it is in broad daylight

They may have used post production to make the sky contrast the building a bit more

Page 14: Task 1

(Illustration)Is a drawing/sketch/painting remembered or imagined using a graphical representation.

The first and second photos on this slide will have been used with a long lens because the pictures are very close up but the 3rd photograph (the basketball player) will be wide to fit the entire person in.

These pictures will be manipulated because they will have had to do a lot of editing to the photos, particularly the first one in order to make it look like a proper illustration.

There will be no lighting applicable as it is illustrated.

Someone that is famous for their illustration work is Johannes Gutenberg who was a German who lived in the 1400’s. He played a key role in the age of entertainment and the scientific revolution.

A current photographer in this field is James Porto

This could be used in magazines,

Page 15: Task 1

Put a building in the back of her head to have an unusual affect on your eyes

They will have had to do a lot of post production to make this photo look the way it looks

The woman half will be controlled but the building will be observational

Page 16: Task 1

(Medical)Medical photography will be used in training materials to show doctors and medical trainees how to perform a medical related activity.

It could also be used in medical magazines to show someone what the facilities are like in the hospital.

All of the photos use ambient light. You can tell this because the photographer is using no other light than the lights inside the medical room. You could argue that it is artificial light because there is no light coming from the sun.

The majority of medical photographers will do their work in minor medical illustration departments in hospitals or even places to get medical education.

Every photo on here was taken with a wide lens.

Medical photographs tend to be observational and all the photos here are observational.

It is highly unlikely that post production has taken place. This is because it is the way you would expect to find a medical room if you walked into one.

In most medical scenario’s the photographer will use a digital camera and a flash to photograph patients on wards and sometimes in a theatre during surgery. They will also do photography on dead bodies in the post mortem room.

Ducehnne De Bolongue was a French medical photographer who was born in 1806 and died in 1875. He was a neurologist, he revived Galvani’s research and specialised in the effect of lesions and his diagnostic innovations which included deep tissue biopsy, nerve conduction tests and clinical photography.

Lizzie Easter is someone who currently takes medical photos and is from Reading. She also takes wedding photos and event photos. Recently she was commissioned by Berkshire Imaging and took some pictures of a broken spinal vertebra.

Page 17: Task 1

The lighting is ambient. Because they’re in a room. Doctors will need light to see what they’re doing

This will be observational, taken the way they found it.

No post productionYou may see these photos in instruction manuals or doctors magazins

This will have been taken with a wide lens because it has managed to fit the room in

Page 18: Task 1

(Fine Art Photography)Involves many different styles of photography and can use all sorts of different techniques. There are many subjects for fine art photography such as architecture and wildlife. You have a choice of the image being black and white or in colour. It may occur that a lot of post production will have been done.

The first and second photos pictured will be a wide lens because there is a lot of foreground and background to go with the main content of the photo whereas the 3rd photo will be a long lens because it is paying a lot attention to the smaller detail.

Photos one and two will be manipulated, photo 3 will be controlled

The lighting for all these photos will be ambient because the first two were taken outside so the lighting used will simply be daylight and the 3 rd photo looks like it has been taken inside but has a light shining over it but could be artificial if a flash was needed

There will have been a lot of post production required to make these photos look like they do, like in photo 3 where they have shaded out part of the bible to give you that evening romance effect. Photos one and 2 are obvious because they give the waves and the clouds an animation effect.

A famous fine art photographer is William Henry Jackson who took photos of the American civil war in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. his long life allowed him to capture an awful lot of his countries history

Someone currently working in this area of photography is Jackson Fine Art who chose not to reveal his real name but does his work in Atlanta, USA

These photos would be used in a lot of galleries.

Page 19: Task 1

There will have been a serious amount of post production needed to make this photo have that artistic effect

Almost looks like she is waving her hair really quickly and ink/water is coming out of it

It is a controlled photo as the photographer would have told the woman to pose in that way

As it is fine art it is more than likely that the lighting is artificial

Page 20: Task 1

(Documentary)Is working on long term projects with multi-stand narratives, it is a lot like photojournalism though photojournalism is more breaking news.

The first photo will very much be a wide lens as the 2 people look very small in comparison to everything else whereas if it was a long lens they’d look much bigger. The second and third are long lens as there is a lot more attention on the people.

All of these photos will be observational.

The lighting will be ambient as every photo is in the outdoors though it is difficult to tell with photos 1 and 3 as they’re in black and white.

Documentary photography is very similar to photojournalism so it will be as they were found, therefore no post production.

Somebody who currently is in the documentary photography business is Ed Thompson who is British. His photos have appeared on National Geographic Magazine, Newsweek Japan and Greenpeace Magazine. A former documentary photographer is Gustave Le Gray who was called the most important French photographer of the 19th century. He was originally a painter but moved to photography in the years of development.

These photos would be used in magazines, newspapers, books and galleries.

Page 21: Task 1

As it is documentary photography there will have been no post production taken place. Post production is like photojournalism, though photojournalism is more breaking news

It will be an observational photo as the photographer has not told the security guard to pose in any specific way

It is unknown what this woman is actually doing but this photo has a bit of a conflict theme to it. This is apparent because the woman is trying to get on with every day life while the man is having to guard to guard the door with a gun

The ‘May I help you’ sign has a very sarcastic effect to it because of the guard holding the gun, he does not look very friendly and welcoming. It is a very stern face.
