PRESIDENT’S REPORT We’re running a bit late with the details of this year’s spring Members’ Exhibition, our selected exhibition which coincides with the Carnival of Flowers. The entry form is not in this July newsletter as would normally be the case. Instead it will be sent out to members during the week beginning 14 th July and again in the August newsletter. Our current exhibitions could hardly be more different: the 20strong TAS Book Group’s incredibly varied and largely experimental array of artists’ books and textiles, and one man’s practiced depiction of the landscape in oils. The former’s rationale “anything can be used in creating a handmade book” is born out, as the participants bring a wide assortment of techniques and materials to their theme, challenging the primacy of the printed paper codex with surprising results. A few examples: bookmaking and textiles coalesce in Noelene Fleming’s and Noelle Hodge’s postcard hangers and in the former’s colourful strings of embellished felt pods, her “Leaf Tales” and “cloth book”, while the latter’s strengths are also sculptural (“Space Odyssey” and ”Escaping Fish”, a vine and paper mobile). Sandra Tessman’s textiles are Japaneseinspired, including two large “Koi”, piscine forms in dyed silk and Kombucha leather, and she also makes books, as does Jenny Burgess whose richlycoloured patchwork panel “Doro” and elegant cloth book “Indigo” share an oriental quality. In the Perinet Gallery Frank McCormick’s Tranquility comprises 14 technically accomplished, more traditional landscapes, impressing with his signature gum tree trunks. We will run a bus trip to QAGOMA on Wednesday, 14 th August. The main attraction is a free double exhibition filling the ground floor of GOMA: Margaret Olley: a Generous Life is a huge survey of the works of this well loved artist whose subject matter ranged far beyond her bestknown still lifes, while Quilty adds power to his sometimes confronting themes with the sheer scale of his canvases, and oil paint which seems to have been trowelled on. As always there will be the option of free guided tours. Upstairs is the annual Creative Generation. Also Qld. Museum will still be showing NASA: A Human Adventure Begins which is ticketed. The Board is in the process of reallocating responsibilities, the first being Mike Grice’s taking over as Exhibitions coordinator.
