Itinerary Specially Prepared forTHE ARMIDALE SCHOOL

Soak it Up 100% Pure New Zealand Rugby Tour July 2014

WELCOMEIt is my pleasure, as Managing Director of Total Rugby, to welcome The ArmidaleSchool to New Zealand. The tradition that has formed between Total Rugby and theSouth Island rugby community continues to flourish and we are delighted with theopportunity to be in your company once again.

    INTRODUCTORY NOTES

Weather: July is winter weather, which means it can be very cold. Temperaturesrange from minus degrees in the mornings to 14 degrees during the day (on a good

    day!)

Grounds: Grounds may be very wet. At times they are closed because of flooding. Ifgrounds are closed all effort will be made to find alternative venues. On the rareoccasion this is not possible the game may have to be cancelled. You should ensurethat all players have long studs in their boots. 18mm is recommended. Backs mayprefer shorter studs but blades, will, in most cases, be ineffective.

    2/16

Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is commonpractice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting teams. This ismeant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as they wish.Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m line and

front up. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are performed at theend of the match and players shake hands with the opposition. Some clubs willperform a haka but it is less common than with school teams. It pays to ask beforethe game starts whether there will be a haka. Some teams may perform their hakaat the end of the game.Mouthguards: Mouthgurards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand. The ref will inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game. Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted inNew Zealand age group rugby.

After match Arrangements: It is customary in New Zealand rugby to have an aftermatch function for special visiting teams. It is a tradition we are keen to maintain.

The after match is generally held at the hosts clubrooms or school. Speeches aremade by the MC and respective captains. Often the visiting coach or manager isalso invited to speak. There is always an exchange of gifts. This can take the formof a plaque/pendant, club or school ties, players jersey, touring booklet, pins/badges, beanies or something else that has been prepared. Food is then served. First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game. Initial firstaid is generally administered by coaching and/or management staff. Emergencyservices are available for more serious injuries. The emergency number in NewZealand is 111. There are after hours medical services available in all main centres. If medical treatment is required because of an accident, the Accident CompensationCommission pays for initial treatment ! although a surcharge is required to be

paid by the patient. Total Rugby will assist with coordinating medical servicesincluding physiotherapy. It is expected that tour groups will have their own travelinsurance to cover medical expenses. Operators of tourist services have their ownpolicies regarding health and safety and issues arising should be managed directlywith them.Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make anearly request for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to source arange of gear.Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service stationsand supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated container for

storing ice at matches.Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily throughout your itinerary.Breakfasts are continental (typically cereal, toast and spreads, tea/coffee), lunchesare packed and are to be collected each day as you leave breakfast, dinners are twocourse (main course and dessert). Please note dinner and breakfast are notincluded on the night the players are billeted, a packed lunch will be available onarrival at Adams House.

Owen FranksOwen made his debut for the Crusaders in 2009 and All Blacks debut just afew months later. His call up to the All Blacks capped a nationalrepresentative career that included appearances for New Zealand Under 21and New Zealand Schools.

He started against Ireland in the first Test of 2010, joining brother Ben inbecoming the first set of siblings to start a Test for the All Blacks since the

Brookes in 1997.Many consider the powerful prop to be one of the world's best despite histender age for a practitioner of the dark arts. His call up to the 2011 All Blacks squad came off the back of a stunningInvestec Super Rugby season with the Crusaders, where their scrum ruledagainst every team they played against.Franks has had a big last couple of years, playing a starring role for theCrusaders and then consolidating himself at tighthead prop for the All Blacks.A self-confessed fan of the physical stuff, Owen's scrummaging ability isexcellent but it is his work around the field which catches the eye particularly his big hits on defence.Owen made his debut for the Crusaders in 2009 when he came on as asubstitute against the Force and made his first start in the victory over theBulls where he made a big impact against the big South Africans.

He made his All Blacks debut just a few months later in front of a homecrowd in Christchurch, coming on as a replacement for John Afoa in the 59thminute. His call up to the All Blacks capped a national representative careerthat includes appearances for New Zealand Under 21 in 2007 and NewZealand Schools in 2005. He earned his first Test start against South Africa atKings Park Stadium in Durban.
