Page 2: Target Audience

The target audience for my magazine is the teenage market mostly, however, that does not mean it would not appeal to a wider audience given personal taste and preference. I created a mood board (below) to illustrate who the target audience would be. As you can see below, there is definitely a running theme with regard colours and style. As these colours represent my target audience, I think it is important to try and link them into my magazine where possible so it the magazine fits in with their comfort zone. I feel that the different pictures represent the audience well from my own experience.

I had a clear idea of my target audience from the beginning and this has turned out to be useful as I have been able to build on that in order to begin to create my music magazine. It was important for me to have a genre I could relate to myself and use my own feelings and ideas to create the magazine.

This is a document from the NRS (national readership survey) about ‘Kerrang!’ magazine for June 2010 – July 2011. ‘Kerrang!’ would be the main competitor for my own magazine ‘Motion’ so I though it was important to look at this information.

As you can see, 71.3% of ‘Kerrang!’ readers are male. This is an interesting statistic because I thought the male:female ratio would be more or less equal. Using this information, I could make my magazine more male orientated or I could attempt to balance it out and try to appeal to the female audience also.

Also, 61.7% of readers are 15-24 years old which is good for me because this was my target age range anyway. Seeing as my magazine is of a similar genre, I expect the ratios to very similar to ‘Kerrang!’.

The demographics show that the majority of readers tend to be upper middle class to lower middle class but there are still quite a few readers who are not in this section, therefore it is important that the price of my magazine will appeal to everyone.

Although these statistics are from ‘Kerrang!’ magazine, I feel that because my magazine will be a similar genre, I can use this information to help me.
