Another Tara Show - done and dusted! We have received such great feedback - “Best Tara Show in a lot of years”, “Stand Out Show”, “Well organised”, “Great Entertainment”.

I just want to extend a massive ‘thank you’ to all the Committee for their time, effort and commitment that they put in to this year’s Show! I so greatly appreciate the support.

Despite the dry conditions in the area, the entries in all sections were marvellous. The school work was phenomenal!!! – which is testament to all Stewards’ work at getting participants. It would not be a Show without any of this.

The new Poultry section was a huge hit and definitely has the potential to double in size next year.

Three Giant Pumpkins made it to show day -- with Abbey Conlan taking out the Championship. This is the second time for the Conlan family, so they obviously have the knack for growing these pumpkins which are quite sensitive and volatile at times. Many seeds are registered but not many make it to the end. Congratulations, Abbey!

The Tara Show Committee strives to achieve a fun-filled, affordable family day out. I believe that we were extremely successful in achieving this. Families were at the Show all day because there was something happening continuously throughout the day and of course, the half price show rides provided that extra value for money. The promotion of the half price rides was certainly an expensive venture to the Show Society – with over 3500 ride tickets sold throughout the day – but it brought in the crowd and it kept them there longer. If there is no entertainment for all ages, there is no crowd. If there is no crowd, there is no Show, in my opinion.

The Tara community has certainly received great value for their money – thanks to the Show Society’s commitment to family entertainment. Throughout the day, we had performances from the Crack-Up Sisters, Noah’s Racing Pigs and Animal Nursery, Country singer Ken Lawson, the Brisbane Band - ‘Second Gear’, and a Fireworks’ Spectacular. But not only that, we subsidised the half price rides in side show alley. Expenditure on entertainment was well into the five figures.

‘Thank you’ to all in the community who attended and supported the Show!

The 2014 Miss Tara Showgirl and Princesses were well represented with seven girls participating over four categories. Each young lady represented themselves, their families and their sponsors tremendously and should be

congratulated for their efforts and participation. This year, the girls raised a total of $8,225.07 -- which is truly amazing considering the challenging seasons within rural Queensland.

2014 Miss Tara Showgirl and Charity Winner - Kennedy Stenzel2014 Miss Tara Showgirl - Runner Up - Rebecca Koch22014 Miss Junior Showgirl and Charity Winner- Rachel Kelly2014 Junior Princess Charity Winner - Georgia Clay2014 Petite Princess Charity Winner - Addison ClayOn behalf of the Show Society, I want to thank all the Showgirls and Princesses for their support and commitment to the Show and to the Tara community.

The Showtime Challenge and the Six Bar Jumping Competition were new to the Show this year and both were very successful and are sure to be a permanent event in the show programme from now on. The Challenge was definitely a crowd pleaser with around 20 competitors, including our 2014 Miss Tara Showgirl - Kennedy Stenzel, Show President and Councillor George Moore --- some great fun was had by all with some pretty stiff competition across the four challenges -- Sheep Counting, Swag Rolling, Hay Throwing and Whip Cracking. The Overall Challenge Champions were - Male: George Moore and Female: 2014 Miss Showgirl Runner-Up - Rebecca Koch.

The Luncheon Hall smorgasbord was received very well. It was lovely to see the return of w h a t used to be a show

tradition. ‘Thank you’ to all who contributed to making salads! Thanks must also go to the Tara Shire State College P&C who did a mighty job at coordinating the lunch on our behalf and also for leaving things so lovely and clean.

One person I would like to truly commend is our Grounds Steward, Geoff Koch --- who supports everyone, is at everyone’s beck and call, deals with all the placement, power and standby issues. Geoff, your support to me personally and to the Show is so greatly appreciated and will never be forgotten. I know that it will be an impossible task to find anyone to fill your shoes. Thank you!

Having had some time for reflect ion, I just wanted to pass on my thanks and appreciation to everyone.

I think it has been the best Show since I have been involved on the Committee. I now encourage more people to come on board and to get involved - whether it be on the Show Committee or another support. It certainly is a rewarding experience and a positive way to contribute to the community we live in. If ‘people’ don’t get involved, then most likely these community events will die and never return. We don’t want that to happen.

‘Thank you’ all again for your support of the 2014 Tara Show and see you all back again in 2015!

A Note From the EditorBabies, babies everywhere! Especially in our office at the moment; Amelia, who has been designing the Jandowae Mill and Miles Lily for us, is now on maternity leave for a year. We wish her the best of luck and we will miss her happy face in the office. On a positive note though, Amy is back! Seems she couldn’t stay away from us and has joined us as a freelancer, taking on the Dalby Harvest and the Tara & District Magazine. I will be on maternity leave myself from next month, but as there is no rest for the wicked, I will be back for the July Editions. In the meantime Kate, Karel and Amy will be holding the fort here at the office.

We have a full wrap-up of the Tara Show on pages 2 and 3 of this edition. It looks like you had a fantastic show. Thank you to Carissa Hallinan and Linda Steinohrt for your assistance with this feature.

The Jandowae Timbertown Festival is also fast approaching; you can read all about the plans for this award winning event on page 10 of this edition, and keep an eye out in next months edition for the full program and details of the Festival.

Easter is almost upon us already and we head into school holiday craziness again! So, until next month enjoy reading your Tara and District Magazine and hopefully you will manage to catch up with family over the Easter break.

No Child Has To Be DeafHidden away in the town of Tara, we have some of the most remarkable people. In March, at the Tara Shire State College, I had the pleasure of meeting five year old Hayden, who is one of many hearing impaired children in our region. However, thanks to technology, the work Hayden’s parents have done and also to Hear and Say, Hayden can interact, hear and speak like every other child. Hayden has a hearing aid that is geared up with the latest; I am not only talking about its electric blue colour and the rocket stickers on it that make the entire class envious of his cool little hearing device, but the marvellous technology. Hayden’s hearing aid is equipped with an FM system. His teachers wear a mic on a battery pack that transmits on an FM frequency to a small receiver that plugs into Hayden’s hearing aid. This allows Hayden to hear the teacher anywhere in the room but sounds as if they are right beside him. The same technology can be applied to cochlea implants and can be used for a number of children in the one class, all working off the same FM frequency.

Hayden’s mother, Lyndell, explained that Hayden is the fourth generation with a hearing impairment on his father’s side, so they were on the lookout for indications right from birth. Hayden began to show some signs of hearing impairment in early development, but he was formally diagnosed at age three. Lyndell contacted Hear and Say, a not-for-profit organisation that deals specifically in hearing impairment and complete hearing loss, and from there, the family never looked back. The treatment began with weekly Skype sessions with Hayden’s Auditory-Visual Therapist (AVT), Jen Durand, which involves lots of games surrounding memory recall, following directions, listening activities, reading books and pronunciation. But the real work began at home with Hayden’s very dedicated parents through reading, pronunciation correction and many other activities. Lyndell says, “Eventually, it becomes automatic but you are on duty 24/7”. Lyndell also explained how the Tara Shire State College has been very supportive of Hayden’s development through their Early Intervention Programme for children with disabilities and the Parents

Involved in Pre Prep Education which teaches many children how to behave in a classroom environment before attending school.

Hayden’s AVT, Jen, from Hear and Say explained that babies begin hearing when the mother is 20 weeks pregnant and for a baby that is born with a hearing impairment, they are already 20 weeks behind their auditory and verbal development. Parents can look for many indicators of hearing loss in their children, such as:

• The screening test done at three days of age

• Turning towards sound

• Responding or looking when their name is called

• Slow speech development

• Learning difficulties

If your child shows any signs of the above, then they may have a hearing impairment and you are encouraged to contact your GP or Hear and Say. There are many children out there who have an undiagnosed hearing impairment who need a lot of support and assistance which can all be provided free to the child. As Hear and Say is a not-for-profit organisation, they welcome any donation and encourage people to participate in their fundraising campaign called ‘Loud Shirt Day’. All proceeds go to the cost of supporting hearing impaired children which amounts to a massive $12,000 per child per year. You can contact Hear and Say by calling 07 3870 2221 or visiting www.hearandsay.com.au

Jen stated that “early intervention is the key” and by supporting Hear and Say, “no child has to be deaf” nor do they walk alone.

Talent in ToastmastersAfter a terrific display of talent at the Area 31 Annual Speech Contest at St George in January, contestants representing Tara, Chinchilla, Roma, and St George Toastmasters’ Clubs set their sights on the Western Division Speech Contest. Travelling to Goondiwindi for the contest held on the 1st and 2nd March, the attendees were treated to some rich and engaging entertainment in the Humorous Speech, Table Topics, Evaluation and International Speech Contests. Competitors challenged their speaking skills against other Area winners from New South Wales and Queensland. Their talents in prepared speech making, as well as impromptu speaking and speech evaluation, were scrutinised by the tough judges until winners were found. Ann Smith of Country Chatters Toastmasters’ Club in Tara showed up the competition in the Evaluation section and placed 2nd overall. Ann is now preparing, in case the winner is unable to represent at the next level of competition held in May at Eight Mile Plains, Brisbane. A Glenmorgan boy some 30 years ago, Bob Goodwin now of Toowoomba, took out the winner of the Humorous Speech Contest and will be competing at the Division contest. Rod Neucom was the winner of the International Speech section and will now go on to compete at District level and should he win, he will represent our nation and other countries of our Division at the International Speech contest in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August. Tara, Roma and Chinchilla will have the pleasure of a visit from Rod Neucom to the Clubs in the coming months.

Overall, the day in Goodiwindi was nothing but fireworks, with the outstanding talent exposed to the public. Toastmasters has obviously helped

to develop the speaking and leadership skills of more than just the competitors on the day. Highly trained and experienced judges, timers, tally counters and chairpersons made the day a success and without their dedication, contests like these can not be held.

If you are considering broadening your skills in leadership, meeting procedures or effective communication, then be sure to contact your

local Toastmasters’ Club for more information or call 0467 467 645. Toastmasters is an encouraging and engaging environment where you can gain practical leadership and communication experience while helping people learn and grow in their professional and personal life.

Camp Oven Comedy at Monogorilby

On Easter Saturday, April 19, 2014, a Privately organized Public Fundraiser for RACQ CareFlight will be held at Monogorilby Hall – a “Camp Oven Comedy” evening with a country focus. During the afternoon, there will be ”open mike” entertainment, stalls and hopefully, demonstrations for the young and the young at heart. If you would like “your five minutes of fame” in whatever your chosen field, please register your interest now. We welcome anyone wanting to ‘have a Go’. This event is just prior to the Boondooma Homestead Festival (One hour down the road).

I can assure everyone that it is, indeed, not to be missed! The food is superb and the entertainment equal to anything costing an ‘arm and a leg’ in

the city. A $2.00 sausage sizzle will be served from noon to 1.00pm, with the Bar open from noon (NO BYO PLEASE).

This year, in the picturesque village, following the main meal served about 6.00pm, will be Bush Poet extraordinaire, Jack Drake. “Jack Drake is everything that a good bush poet should be. He does a one-off dead-

set ripper act...the language is colourful and the poems range from hilarious to the epic to the poignant. This is real authentic stuff,” Ted Egan OA.

To delight your palate, the main meal is Pig on the Spit with vegies (beef also served). A large selection of delicious “Homemade Goodies” is offered for dessert for which a donation is appreciated.

There is plenty of room for camping, so why not bring your tent/van, ute. etc and enjoy a night in the bush? The hall will be open for big or small snoozers; just bring your swag. Cooked breakfast will be available from 7am on Sunday at $10.00 per person. Poets’ Breakfast – we welcome “walk-

up” bush poets for our Poets’ Breakfast followed by a Church Service.

Why not come early, settle in, put your feet up and relax? There will be other fun activities (especially for the young and the young at heart) depending on numbers.

RACQ CareFlight helps innumerable people every year, so come along to support this worthy Cause!

Get back to basics and enjoy an evening of fun around the campfire. CENT SALE WILL BE RUNNING!

For those unsure about the directions to Monogorilby, it is a little rural area in the North Burnett Regional Shire. Signs will direct from the turn off on the highway. Please remember to bring warm clothes, just in case.

As this is a catered event, it is vitally important to book and to pay for tickets by 12th April. DON’T MISS OUT!!! So please, contact 07 41 658 121 or email: [email protected]. Prices are as follows (for meal and entertainment): 16 Plus $35, 6 to 15years $15 (No EFTPOS facilities available).

Do join us for a great “cultural night out in the bush”! You won’t be disappointed!

Tara Shire College NewsConstitutional ConventionOn Monday, 10th March, four students, Rachael, Joan, Renee and Emily Richter attended the Annual Constitutional Convention.

The Constitutional Convention is a National Competition for senior students who study Modern History and/ or Legal Studies. Schools in regions across Australia compete to send one student to the National Convention in Canberra. The competition is based on each school’s representative making a speech on a given constitutional issue. The speeches are voted on by the students representing each school and the selected winner represents their region in Canberra. Emily was our nominated speaker; she had to speak on whether Australia should adopt a Bill of Rights or not.

In order to arrive at the event at USQ in Toowoomba, we had to wake up extremely early to get to the school no later than 6 am. The experiences started before reaching Dalby. Thanks to Mr Murdoch’s quick reaction, we survived after nearly hitting three kangaroos. Rachel fell asleep with her headphones in her ears. Renee and I entertained everyone as we sang songs that we didn’t know, along the way.

We were the first to arrive at the University of Southern Queensland. Eight schools from the Darling Downs region, most of them being from Toowoomba, gathered in a lecture room. We started with acknowledgement of country and an official opening from Member of Parliament for Toowoomba North, Trevor Watts. Senior Law Lecturer, Pauline Collins, gave us a seminar on the history and development of our rights. We then broke up into groups and discussed with the other schools, on what we think should be included in a possible Bill of Rights. After morning tea, Federal Senator Clair Moore from Queensland talked to us about her perspective on whether she believes we need a Bill of Rights as well as discussing changing the Constitution with regard to a Bill of Rights and the challenges of doing so, including the implications of current approaches.

There were eight schools attending the Constitutional Convention and one student was elected speaker from each school. The speakers were drawn and Emily was lucky enough to be chosen first. She spoke extremely well; she was confident and knew what she was talking about. Her arguments and ideas were valid and persuasive; she was a great role model for Tara

Shire State College. Each school presented great arguments even though some were a bit over the top. However, every elected representative student speaker did a great job. The winner was announced after lunch and this year, it was a student from Lockyer District State High School, Jason Weatherby.

The whole experience was great and for our participation in the event, we were given a Certificate. All students who had attended the Constitutional Convention also received a gift bag from the Australian Electoral Commission, which ran the student representative election.

Carnivals of champions

Recently, the students of Tara Shire State College, both primary and secondary, participated in their respective Swimming Carnivals. Luckily, we were fortunate enough to be granted sunny, warm days for both events. Both carnivals had great participation by students vying for points for their house team.

“Well done” to all the students who participated and “congratulations” to the Age Champions! A big ‘thank you’ must go to Mr Taylor for organising a successful carnival and to Miss Seymour, Mr Cobb and Mr Stanley for their contributions on the day. We would like to again thank all the

students, parents, volunteers and officials who have been helping out down at the pool over both events. Without your help and support, the Swimming Carnivals would not be able to go ahead. Chief Timekeeper, Margaret Boardman,

would also like to acknowledge the great skills shown by some Year 11 and 12 students as they have helped out timekeeping during these Carnivals.

A great day was had at both carnivals by all who participated and officiated. For the record, the Primary Swimming Carnival was won by Bukari

House and the Secondary Carnival was won by Patonga House. With Cross Country coming up soon, there is plenty of time for Coolac to catch up.

Gardening

Gardening Tips For AprilThis is a good time of year to start preparing for winter and spring flowers, bulbs and vegetables. Hyacinth, ranunculus, daffodil and jonquil bulbs can all be planted in April. To get them growing as quickly as possible, feed them with a specialised fertiliser such as Yates Bulb Food at planting time to give them an extra boost.

April is also a good time to sow foxglove, delphinium, cornflower and calendula seeds. Pansies, violas and lobelias can be planted now as well and look beautiful in hanging baskets to add a burst of colour.

Vegetables to plant this month include: broad beans, snow peas, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, onions, parsnip and spinach. To avoid fruit fly, don’t forget to hang a fruit fly trap nearby to your vegetable garden and citrus trees. Also, to prevent brown rot fungus, remove all mummified fruit from stone fruit trees and spray with Bordeaux mixture at leaf fall.

As water supplies are diminishing due to the severe drought that we are experiencing, it is important to take the appropriate steps to ensure your garden is able to retain as much moisture as possible. Always keep your gardens well mulched with a good quality mulch such as Sugarcane, Tea Tree, Lucerne or Cypress Mulch. Not only will this assist with water retention, but it will also prevent weeds from growing. Eco-hydrate and Penetraide can also be watered on to help with deep water penetration.

Dorothy’s StoryGrevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’ originated in Myall Park Botanic Garden, just like her famous daughter namesakes Grevillea ‘Robyn Gordon’, Grevillea ‘Sandra Gordon’ and Grevillea ‘Merinda Gordon’. This beautiful new hybrid is the Directors’ selection with parentage from Western Australia and Queensland. Both parents are widely separated botanically and regionally, and thus Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’ has no fertile seeds.

Origin

Caretaker, Marion Firns, reports on the discovery of this chance hybrid:

‘As you know, some of the Garden jobs are tedious and time consuming. One such project was recording the plants in the Garden. In July, 2006, Nita C. Lester and I were recording that particular section. I was quite amazed that Nita hesitated when she came to identify the little plant. We had recorded hundreds of plants and this had never happened before. She thought we should monitor it, just in case it continued to grow.’

Warren immediately caged it and pruned the surrounding plants just enough to give the little one room to grow. He also supplied water to the plant. At this stage, this was just another Garden job to be added to the ever growing list.

‘That all changed in November, 2006. That particular morning is very vivid in my memory. It was my turn to check the drippers. This job is

on the ground and I don’t know why I looked up. The first flower had appeared. I was really excited as the flower was stunning and so different from the other grevilleas - not that I was an expert. I particularly loved the way the styles made beautiful pink loops before they opened. Underneath, I could see a velvety burgundy. I couldn’t wait to photograph it. I remember racing the old pushbike back to Terpersie Cottage to collect both Warren and my camera, so I could let Nita know. She was just as excited as I was and was keen to continue.’

Development of plants and paperwork

The plant survived two periods of drought and one very wet time when it stood in water for over a month. It flowered often so it was decided to keep it lightly trimmed.

Nita asked Colin Campbell about procedures to follow if this hybrid proved to be horticulturally important and should the Garden Directors register it. Colin suggested registering on both the Australian Cultivar Registration and Plant Breeders Rights before selling. The three sisters were all sold before registration, so neither the Gordon family nor the Garden have benefitted from the sale of labels for these three plants. Colin also suggested the Directors approach Edward and Mary Bunker of Aussie Winners to propagate ‘Dorothy’. The Bunkers had been part of the trials for ‘Robyn’ so they had had connections with our Garden in the past. Nita took cuttings to them with images of the flowers and they indicated they would begin trials.

The Directors decided to name the new hybrid Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’ after Dorothy Gordon, an excellent watercolourist and wife of Dave Gordon. The Garden would then have grevilleas named for the three sisters/daughters and their mother.

During this time, Nita had success in propagating four plants and one of these was planted in Brisbane on the acacia/ironbark ridge type soil. Peter Reilly took cuttings to the Gold Coast and was successful, so another test specimen was planted in the coastal sands of Runaway Bay. He took more cuttings, some of which were planted out in the clay loam of Nerang.

Cultivar Registration and Plant Breeders’ Rights paperwork commenced. All specimen plants flowered true with pink styles and deep purple/black centres. The new leaves are soft bronze

turning greener as they mature.

The Bunkers had mixed success with their earlier cuttings but did achieve a number of successful potted plants from which numerous cuttings have since been taken. A marketing agreement was written between Aussie Winners and the Garden.

Test specimens have been successfully grown in the varied soil types of the Gold Coast, Nerang, Redland Bay, Brisbane and Mapleton. Peter Reilly tested the effects of pruning and reported ‘Dorothy’ recovers positively after a reasonable trim, but not after a heavy pruning.

Label design and release planning

The Directors researched label designs to determine the most appropriate layout and data inclusions. Aussie Winners designed the label to the Directors’ specifications. Promotional material was written in preparation for the release.

In August, 2013, Carole and Richard Green assisted with the planting of eleven mature specimens at the Garden and these continue to thrive.

Grevillea ‘Dorothy Gordon’ will be released on the 26 April at noon at Myall Park Botanic Garden, just before Mother’s Day.

For details of the 26th April release and/or to order your ‘Dorothy’, email [email protected] or telephone the Garden Office on 07 4746 4705.

Hot Cross Scones

Method

Step 1 Preheat oven to 220°C. Brush a baking tray with melted butter to lightly grease.

Step 2 Sift together the flour and icing sugar in a large bowl. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the currants and stir to combine. Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk. Use a round-bladed knife in a cutting motion to mix until evenly incorporated and the mixture begins to hold together.

Step 3 Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead until smooth. Use a lightly floured rolling pin to roll dough out to about 1.5cm thick. Use a 5cm-diameter pastry cutter dipped in flour to cut 15 scones from the dough. Place scones on the tray about 5mm apart. Brush tops with extra milk. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden and scones sound hollow when tapped on top. Set aside for 30 minutes to cool.

Step 4 Meanwhile, place the chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a saucepan half-filled with simmering water (make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water). Stir until the chocolate melts and is smooth. Spoon into a sealable plastic bag and cut 1 corner to make a 5mm opening. Pipe the chocolate in a cross on top of each scone. Set aside for 5 minutes to set.

Ingredients

Melted butter, to grease

300g (2 cups) self-raising flour

2 tablespoons icing sugar mixture

80g chilled butter, cubed

55g (1/3 cup) currants

125ml (1/2 cup) milk

Tara Police ReportOver the past month the Tara policing division has been kept busy with a variety of work coming across our officer’s desks.

Police have investigated three separate instances of assault over the last month. In two of these incidents, a female juvenile and an adult male received serious injuries. The offenders in all cases have been charged. A 30 year old female and a 14 year old female were charged with assault occasioning bodily harm and a 44 year old male was charged with common assault. All persons are to appear before the Dalby Magistrates and Children’s Courts, respectively.

Police have charged four adults and a juvenile with possession of cannabis and utensils used to smoke or consume dangerous drugs in four separate incidents. Police have a zero tolerance approach to illegal drug possession and drug use. It has no place in the community and our officers will continue to make every effort to stamp out drug use in this community. If anyone believes they have information on drug use or supply, the Tara Police are very interested in hearing this information. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers to report your information anonymously.

Over the past month, the Tara Policing division has seen several instances of machinery and trucks being broken into in the outlying rural areas. I urge members of the community to secure their trucks and machinery in a highly visible area or close to their homes so that they can keep an eye out and to prevent offenders from continuing to commit these offences. If anyone does have information on these vehicle break-ins, I ask that you contact Tara Police with this information.

Police have charged three people with drink driving in the past month. A male was caught drink driving on the Surat Developmental Road with a reading of 0.053. A female was caught driving on Arnold’s Road with a reading of 0.065 and another male was caught on Baddley’s Lane with a reading of 0.126. Drink driving is unacceptable and no mercy will be shown whilst our officers enforce it. You are not only a danger to yourself when you get behind the wheel of a car whilst intoxicated, you are a danger to all the other innocent motorists and pedestrians who use our streets. If you feel you may be over the limit, do not drive. You may find yourself in a situation far worse than a drink driving charge if you injure or kill someone.

This brings me to the next topic which is somewhat related. I feel it is time for a reminder to everybody that it is against the law to consume liquor in a public place. This includes the main street, the park, in front of the pubs, anywhere that is not licensed or a private residence. Lately, there seems to be an increase in the number of people police are finding drinking out in public. And, as a follow on result of this, our police are finding juveniles wandering the streets consuming liquor and intoxicated. If you are found consuming liquor in public, you will be charged (adult or juvenile) and if you are found supplying liquor to juveniles, you will be charged and held accountable for this.

Several trespassing and wilful damage incidents have occurred in the past month. In many cases, the damages that have occurred appear to have no motive behind them other than to just break things for the hell of it. I remind all members of the community to secure any property that you own and to keep an eye on your belongings. Again, I ask that anyone with information as to who may be responsible for causing property damage, please provide this information to Tara Police.

Businesses Must Pay Employees Right or Risk Serious PenaltiesSmall businesses that bury their heads in the sand when it comes to following the correct rules for employing people, continue to lose time, productivity and dollars.

To assist businesses and help them avoid getting penalised, BMO Business Centre HR Advisor Barry Jordan will be running a two-day hands-on Human Resources workshop in Dalby in May.

“The modern awards and Fair Work Act have been in place for approximately four years now. However we are still finding small businesses are struggling to understand and keep up with fulfilling all their obligations.”

“It’s often good hardworking small business owners who think they are doing all the right things who get caught out, and unfortunately the penalties can have a serious impact on the business.”

Recently a café in a regional Queensland town near here, was made to back-pay an employee $48,586 after failing to meet their legal obligations.

The café had failed to issue the employee with payslips and had not kept relevant employment records, including the rate of remuneration, hours worked, overtime records or superannuation contributions. The café has agreed to pay him in weekly instalments by the end of November this year and to overhaul their workplace policies to ensure future compliance with workplace laws.

“Obviously mistakes like that, especially left to go over long periods of

time, can be very costly to a business,” Mr Jordan said.

It’s critical that employers understand how important it is that the people responsible for looking after payroll and employment matters are trained correctly to deal with the complex industrial regulations.

Mr Jordan said the key was to make sure you understand the laws and how to find workable and practical ways to follow them.

“You can no longer rely on an agreed pay rate and a hand shake to start off a new employee. You need to engage them correctly under the modern awards, or a legally acceptable alternative arrangement. The catch is that any arrangement you negotiate still has to be equal with or better than the award. So you have to know what’s in the award when it comes to pay rates, overtime, allowances, work hours and other stipulations.”

He said another important obligation businesses often missed was the issuing of correct payslips and record keeping.

At the workshop, Mr Jordan will cover rules and regulations, engagement and appointment, record keeping, long service leave calculations, employee vs contractor, performance management, dealing with termination and unfair dismissal rules. For more information on the workshop please head to www.bmo.com.au.

Andy’s Agro Roundup Preparing Winter Seed

Now is the time to be getting all your seed prepared for the upcoming winter plant, e.g. wheat and barley

With Dave Abbott local seed grader now into full swing at the present moment we are very glad to hear that he can offer pickling as part of his grading service. Mobil number 0428358142

We are glad to announce the release of vibrance seed dressing from syngenta. Vibrance is the next generation of seed treatment replacing dividend, offering the same disease control plus extra with loose smut and an extended crop range (oats).

Vibrance is the only fungicide seed treatment to control seed- borne diseases (smuts and bunts) as well as pythium and rhizoctonia. Pythium control is critical to cereal establishment in this western Queensland cropping area. Vibrance protects the fine roots hairs from pythium enabling the seedling assess to moisture and nutrients easily, in turn a more vigorous seedling establishment.

Vibrance also has the ability to move into the surrounding soil and provide a protective halo around the seed and developing root system.

Vibrance will cost less than $1 an acre at normal planting rates.

Ask OptomTomYour questions answered by the experts at Eyecare Eyewear

Question: Will orthoK lenses stop me from becoming more shortsighted?

Answer: Orthokeratology is the custom hard contact lens treatment where the front of the eye is reshaped from overnight wear. The usual result is clear sight without the need for glasses during the day.

Recently a further study has been published demonstrating a greater than 50% reduction in growth of the axial length of the eye with this treatment. An increase in axial length is one of the main reasons for progression in myopia or shortsightedness.

In summary, no treatment approach can guarantee that a patient’s optical prescription with stabilize. However, orthokeratology is the closest thing we as optometrist have ever had to this Holy Grail. In my opinion, this should be the first correction option offered to any patient who is becoming more shortsighted.

AsthmaAsthma is an inflammatory disorder of the airways that makes breathing difficult. It affects more than two million Australians. Asthma can be well controlled with medication, allowing a person with asthma to live a normal and active life, free of symptoms.

People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs. When exposed to certain triggers, the muscles around the airways tighten, the lining of the airways becomes inflamed and swollen and extra mucus is secreted, resulting in narrower air passages and difficulties with breathing.

SYMPTOMS

• A dry cough, especially at night, early in the morning and with exercise or activity

• Wheezing or whistling sound with breathing

• Breathlessness• Chest tightness• A person with asthma may have

one or more of these symptoms.

TRIGGERS

There are many triggers for asthma and they can differ for each person. Some known triggers include:

Inhaled allergens (e.g. house dust mites, pollens, moulds or animal hair)

• Cigarette smoke• Colds and flu• Drop in air temperature

• Exercise• Emotion, stress, anxiety• Some foods, flavourings,

colourings

Some people can have asthma attacks which are triggered by something associated with their work or workplace.

The management of asthma aims to keep a person free of asthma symptoms and to prevent lung damage from asthma. It involves avoiding or managing asthma triggers and correct use of asthma medication.

Most asthma medicines are inhaled into the lungs through an inhaler device, but sometimes tablets, syrups or injections must be used. The main types of asthma medicines are called relievers, preventers and symptom controllers.

CARE

Identify and manage asthma triggersKeep using asthma medication even when you feel wellUse inhaler correctly – Check with your pharmacist if not sureAlways carry a reliever with youDo not smoke and avoid other people who smoke

For further information regarding your asthma, please drop in and speak with one of our friendly Pharmacists at Friendly Society Dispensary who will answer any questions which you may have.

Urgent Chemical Alert! Your Health is at Serious Risk!Last month, I covered the need for adequate sleep and the negative effect it can have on your health right from your physical wellbeing through to mental health. If you missed this, I encourage you to take a look at last month’s magazine.

This month, I am putting the spotlight on a very serious issue - preservatives. Now I know that some of you are thinking… “I have heard it all before”, however, this issue is much more widespread than you think. We are talking about not only food and drink but cleaning products, beauty products, personal care items, anything that can be absorbed, inhaled or ingested might be putting your health at risk.

Preservatives come in many forms, shapes and sizes. They are used to prevent a product from expiring, going off, rotting, or becoming ineffective. They can be used in food and drink, your shampoo, shaving cream, toothpaste, makeup, dishwashing liquid, soap and just about anything that you consume in your home.

In 2013, a study by Anand and Sati called Artificial Preservatives and Their Harmful Effects: Looking

Toward Nature For Safer Alternatives was released, giving conclusive evidence about the detrimental effects preservatives can have on your health. So you might be asking, “Then why is it on our shop shelves?” The answer is simply that there are not enough restrictive laws around our consumables. The study revealed a number of harmful side effects but the most alarming was that “preservatives such as nitrates, benzoates, sulfites, sorbates, parabens, formaldehyde, BHT, BHA and several others can cause serious health hazards such as hypersensitivity, allergy, asthma, hyperactivity, neurological damage and cancer.” “In young children, temper tantrums and disruptive behaviour” were observed. As well as “the use of these toxic chemicals by pregnant women may adversely affect foetal brain development.” “Toxins like these can cause DNA damage to sperm”. Although it doesn’t stop there, other causes include: “severe allergic reactions and exacerbation of asthma, neurological damage in rats, skin, eye and lung irritation and allergies”.

However, there is a silver lining; the study also concluded that “natural preservatives

offer greater advantages over their artificial counterparts due to their non-toxic nature along with a wide range of health benefits.”

Start looking through your home and begin eliminating things with ingredients such as sorbate, butylate, propionate and the big one PARABEN!

Meandarra BowlsThe game of Night Bowls was a BIG HIT! An excellent turnout of 42 players made the ‘last night’ of Summer outdoors a memorable one. Spent with family, friends and, of course, the pesky mossies, everyone had a splendid time of confusion, mossie sprays, patches, fun, laughter and food and lots of drinks. The McDonald Trophies were won by: Skip – Bruce Fry, Second – Vanessa Kelly and Lead – Tanya Wales. Tony Barnes walked away with the popular Club raffle prize. The sky certainly lit up at this corner of Meandarra. ‘Thank you’ once again to everyone for making the effort to make it a success!

The Club is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays from 5pm onwards and Club Rule applies to all. Fridays are BBQ nights prepared by our lovely volunteers. Please feel free to drop in for a bite and to socialize as well as to catch-up on the latest. The Club greatly appreciates your patronage.

Tara BowlsThe inaugural Tara Premier League went off with a blast last Sunday with a full green of 16 teams competing for the coveted honour. The format, similar to the televised Australian Premier League recently televised on Foxtel, proved to be a wonderful success and very popular with those who attended.

A strong field had assembled for the event which consisted of five matches, each consisting of 2 x 5 ends sets, plus a tie-breaker if needed. Interesting twists such as double point power plays and not rolling, rather placing the kitty ensured matches were played at a lively pace.

In the end teams still had to play good bowls, and the cream rose to the top as the consistent Nathan Appleton, Greg Stanton and young Jake Rynne took out the title with 37 points. In second place were the late inclusion Miles team of Bob Wise, Scotty Guymer and Tim Wise on 36 points. This team had their chance to take the title but went down in the final round to the Chinchilla team of Sue Slatter, Mick Gleeson and Daryl Slatter on 35 points, who snuck into third. Rounding out the top five was another Chinchilla team of Greg Cook, Kinglsey Obst and Lorraine Marsden 33 points and Bruce Derrick (Dalby), John Smith and Matthew Prain 29 points.

The Tara Club is very appreciative for all those teams from away who travelled to compete in the Tara Premier League. Thanks also to our sponsors, Bruhls Roadworks and BCiB.

Tara CricketMeandarra have claimed their second consecutive Tara and District Cricket Association premiership after they defeated Condamine by 67 runs last Sunday.

After winning the toss and batting, Meandarra's openers John Penfold and Keith Logan got off to a good start, taking the score to 38 off the first 6 overs before Logan was caught for 13. Ryan Burrows came and went for a duck which bought Brendan Hatherell to the crease and he and Penfold combined for a 94 run partnership before Penfold was bowled by Dillon Hamilton for a well made 53. Hatherell was out shortly afterwards for 63 which triggered a collapse of Meandarra's middle and lower order, losing 6 for 19 to be bowled out for 182 in 30 overs. Gary Becker was the only other Meandarra batsman to make double figures, making 23.

Raiden Van Kruick was the chief destroyer for Condamine, picking up the impressive figures of 5 for 39 off his 7 overs. He was well supported by Bluey Smith 2 for 16 off 5 and Dillon Hamilton 2 for 39 off 7 also. Billy Barkle took the other wicket to fall.

Condamine's run chase got off to steady start losing Sam Taylor for just 1 to be 1 for 34 off 10 overs. Guy Campbell and Angus Smith tried to lift the run rate, taking the score to 53 when Smith was bowled by Craig Emery for 15. This triggered another collapse as Condamine lost Ash Morgan, Scott Attwooll and Bluey Smith for very few runs to be 5 for 79 off 18 overs. Condamine's tail needed to bat well if they were to challenge Meandarra's total, but they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Darren McTigue 13 and Billy Barkle 11 tried to get Condamine close but it wasn't to be as they were bowled out for 115

in 24 overs. Guy Campbell's batted well for his score of 34.

Meandarra only used 4 bowlers for the day with openers Brendan Hatherell 3 for 12 off 6 and Sonny Power 0 for 15 off 5 bowling very economically first up. Craig Emery has a knack of picking up crucial wickets and did so once again claiming 3 for 41, while John Penfold wrapped up a good all-round game taking 2 for 47 off his 7 overs.

Earlier in the day Tara relegated Moonie to the wooden spoon after they defeated them by 7 wickets. Moonie batted first and made a competitive 145 off their 20 overs, thanks mainly to Patty Nolan 40 retired, Pete Fourie 42 retired and Matthew Wicks 18. Brendan Cobb bowled well for Tara taking 2 for 16 while Greg Chappell and Jeff Wade picked wickets. Tara got off to a bad start losing Matthew Prain for a duck, but Jeff Wade 16, Allan Bougoure 37, Justin Dries 41 retired and Brendan Cobb 30 not out were never troubled, passing Moonie's total in the 13th over. Brad Baker, Matthew Wicks and Andrew Hirst picked up the wickets to fall.
