Lebohang’s road to living her dream on the frontlineRUSTENBURG HERALD - THABAZIMBI - For thousands of South African health workers, the Covid-19 pandemic has been the most stressful and testing time of their careers – and many of them are women.

But Lebohang Rasepae, an auxiliary nurse at Amandelbult Hospital in Thabazimbi, Limpopo, wouldn’t have it any other way.

From a young age, she knew she wanted to be a nurse, so she’s living her dream. Lebohang has been working at the hospital, which services the community around Anglo American’s Tumela Mine, since 2006. In this time, she’s worked across a range of disciplines, including the medical, surgical and TB wards. She’s currently in the emergency ward, which is literally on the frontline of the fight against the pandemic. “It is challenging. Our workload has increased, and it’s tough when our colleagues get ill, and seeing the death toll. Social distancing is just not possible in bedside nursing. But this pandemic has taught me that life is short, and we all need to live our lives to the fullest,” says Lebohang. For Lebohang, surviving this moment in history starts by sticking to the basics: wearing masks and personal protective equipment (PPE), washing her hands, sanitising and practising social distancing. And while she hasn’t had much time to think about Women’s Month this year, she’s clear that the country needs to do a hard reset on its attitudes to women as part of our response to the pandemic. Her advice for the next generation of women is simple: “I encourage all young women to educationally empower themselves. That is the only way to secure your future, and carve a niche for yourself as an ambitious woman in this world.”

Griet vier 100ste verjaardagRUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Griet Naudé het op Sondag 23 Augustus 2020 haar 100ste verjaardag tydens ‘n heerlike geselligheid saam met familie gevier.

Griet is in 1920 in die Rustenburg-omgewing gebore en het die grootste deel van haar lewe op Paardekraal gewoon. Sy woon tans by haar enigste oorlewende dogter, Annetjie Niehaus op Zuurplaat. Griet het drie kinders, een seun Hendrik (Spyker - reeds oorlede) en twee dogters (Susan van Niekerk - reeds oorlede) en Annetjie gehad. Haar aangetroude kinders is vir haar soos haar eie, Ansie Naudé, Dirk van Niekerk en Fanie Niehaus. Sy het 12 van haar eie kleinkinders en 8 aangetroud, 30 agterkleinkinders en 2 agter-agterkleinkinders. Sy sê nou nog haar “standerd 2”-gedig, “Dirkie Uys” vlot uit haar kop op en so ook vele ander gedigte wat sy geleer het. Haar geheue is nog uitstekend en sy vergeet min dinge.

“Sy is ‘n ongelooflike vrou vir wie ons almal baie lief is. Haar kleinkinders het van die Kaap af gekom om hierdie besondere gebeurtenis te vier.” As dit nie vir Covid-19 was nie, was haar kleinkind, Alta Labuschagne van Australië ook hier. Griet is Marnus Labuschagne (Australiese-krieketspeler) se oumagrootjie. Baie geluk met hierdie wonderlike mylpaal!

Pilanesberg to benefit from new book on leopards

RUSTENBURG HERALD - PILANESBERG - The Pilanesberg Leopard Project is proud to present and launch the Pilanesberg Leopard Identification Book on Saturday, 29 August at The Pilanesberg Centre in Pilanesberg National Park.

The beautifully presented book, which was compiled by the Leopard Project Admin team, comprises 68 pages which include all the identified leopard individual profiles, history, territories, family trees and a whole lot of additional leopard information. We invite everyone to please support us at the launch on Saturday which will take place between 10:00 and 15:00. All proceeds of the books will be donated to the Pilanesberg Wildlife Trust.

"Die persoon skakel slagoffers en vertel hulle hy het hul

gesteelde voertuig opgespoor. Hy voer dan aan dat hy die voertuig kan gaan haal, maar dat hulle vir hom 'n bedrag moet e-wallet,"vertel Rustenburg Polisiewoordvoerder, kapt Elsabé Augoustides. Nodeloos om te sê, die slagoffer is dan, behalwe sy motor, boonop geld ook kwyt. Kapt Augoustides gee die versekering dat 'n polisiebeampte nooit ooit geld durf vra om 'n saak af te handel nie. "Indien jou pad met dié skurmunkel s'n kruis, kontak asseblief onmiddellik jou naaste polisiestasie of die régte ondersoekbeampte wat jou saak ondersoek," vra kapt Augoustides.

RUSTENBURG HERALD – RUSTENBURG – Police here are investigating a case of culpable homicide after an eight-year-old girl died in a car crash on Wednesday evening (19 Augustus).

The accident happened just after 18:00 in Helen Joseph Drive, just after the Arend Drive turn-off. According to the police, the 29-year-old driver of the white Toyota bakkie, Kenneth Shonogwane, claims that he felt the vehicle shudder just as he was crossing the bridge. He says after the shudder, he lost control of the vehicle. The bakkie rolled, slinging his 39-year-old sister-in-law and her two children – eight –and three-years-old respectively – from the vehicle. Shonogwane's sister-in-law and three-year-old little boy sustained serious injuries, while the eight-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries. According to eyewitness reports on social media, the bakkie travelled at high speed when the accident happened, allegedly ignoring the red traffic light at the crossing of Helen Joseph Drive and Arend Road. The drivers of other vehicles said they had to swerve desperately to avoid being hit by the bakkie before it rolled.

RUSTENBURG HERALD - KARLIENPARK –Police in Rustenburg have opened an inquest and are also investigating a case of murder following after a man shot and killed his girlfriend and later fatally shot himself in Collins Street Karlien Park.

Tragedy struck in Reutlwile Township in Karlien Park on Thursday afternoon (20 August) when it was reported that a man allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend and turned the gun on himself. According to information received from Rustenburg Cluster Police Spokesperson, Sergeant Ofentse Mokgadi, the two died on the scene. The girlfriend was 29-years-old. It is

Breakthrough in a string of car hijackingsRUSTENBURG - RUSTENBURG - One of the most notorious alleged car hijackers who operated around Mmakau, Klipgat and Akasia in Gauteng, was expected to appear before Brits Magistrates' Court on Thursday (20 August). on three charges of carjacking and one of murder.

According to Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, provincial police spokesperson, the suspect was arrested on Tuesday (11 August), at a Double Quick Section, Winterveldt through intelligence driven operation by Mmakau detectives and Bojanala Platinum Sub-District 1 Trio Crimes Task Team.

During the arrest, the suspect was found in possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle which was positively linked to a car hijacking committed last

month in Akasia. He was further found in possession of unlicensed firearm, ammunition and a cell phone belonging to one of the car hijackings victim.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect was wanted for five car hijackings committed around Mmakau between August 2019 and June 2020.

He has also been linked with two armed robberies which were allegedly committed in Klipgat in July and August 2020.

RUSTENBURG HERALD – BRITS - Na wat verneem word, kan motoriste daarna uitsien om binnekort die Pampoennekpad te kan gebruik.

Dié pad wat deur deur die Magaliesberg sny, verbind die R512, wes van Hartbeespoortdam, met die noordelike voorstede van Johannesburg (Randburg en Sandton) en aan die noordekant van die Magaliesberg, met die N4 Bakwena-tolpad na Brits, Rustenburg en Sun City.

Die opening van die Pampoennek-skakel gaan ook na verwagtinge motoriste se reistyd na en van Lanseria-lughawe aansienlik verkort en veiliger maak.

“Die projek was geoormerk om Maart/April 2020 voltooi te wees,” sê Hennie Kotze, SANRAL Projekingenieur: Plaveisels, “maar met die toepassing van die vlak 5-inperkingmaatreëls met die Covid-19-pandemie in Suid-Afrika, kon daar eers weer op vlak 4 met voltooiing voortgegaan word.” Die gewag behoort moontlik binnekort iets van die verlede te wees wanneer die projek, met ‘n finale konstruksiekoste van R355,3 miljoen, vir motoriste se gebruik, oopgestel word.

“Die projek is suksesvol voltooi deur ‘n uitstekende span mense wat uit die kontrakteur, die ontwerpingenieurs asook die toesighoudende ingenieurs bestaan het. Dit sou ook nie moontlik gewees het sonder die ondersteuning en samewerking van al die inwoners in die omgewing nie,” verduidelik Kotze.

“Voorsiening is gemaak vir die gebruik van plaaslike arbeid asook geteikende sub-kontrakteurs in terme van die regering en SANRAL se beleid oor voorkeurverkryging (preferential procurement), wat jeugdiges en vroue in die mark bevoordeel.”

Om die prag van die ongerepte bosveld te behou, het SANRAL die beskerming van die natuurlike fauna en flora voorop gestel.

Meer as 1000 inheemse bome en struike is weer langs die pad aangeplant, soos maroela, koraal, drolpeer, karee en fluweelboswilg, wilde appelkoos, blinkblaar en nanabessie.

”Met die aanvang van die projek is daar ook 3556 struike en kleiner inheemse plante uit die padreserwe gehaal en in ‘n nabygeleë kwekery geberg, wat ook almal weer hervestig is,” vertel Kotze “en daar is ook ‘n duikweg vir wild om vrylik deur te beweeg.”

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG – “Sorry mam! Unfortunately we can’t help you, because you are dead!” Imagine going to the bank to open an account or going to your nearest traffic office to renew your licence and you are confronted with this statement.

Well, that was the shocking news that Susan Jenkings, a 67-year-old lady from Rustenburg East (Oos-Einde) received recently when he wanted to renew her driver’s licence. But how can that be, I am standing right in front of you! How can I be dead while I am talking to you? That question is what Jenkings has been asking since she discovered that she died early in 2019.

Last week Jabulani Senyatso of the Rustenburg Herald had a rather rare opportunity to interview and share coffee with the “deceased” lady, just to find out how it has been since she discovered that she had “died” and to get a feel of how it has been since she died.

“My life and my livelihood has been disrupted by this incident, I am not able to get services from the bank, from traffic office, and sadly enough I am not able to apply for old pension grant because I get told I have died.

This problem according to Jenkings started in 2016 when her mother died. After her mother died they went to Rustenburg Home Affairs to arrange for her mother’s death certificate, Jenkings believes that instead of declaring her mother dead, Home Affairs have declared both her and her mother dead. She has been to the Offices of Home Affairs several times, but the problem is still not being addressed.

“The last time when I went to Home Affairs I was told that the problem had been resolved, and now when I visit a bank I am still being told that I am dead,” said Jenkings in disbelief.

“I just don’t understand what could be so difficult for them to fix this problem because my life is now on hold, I can’t even get my SASSA grant, and life is hard. Polisie slaan toe op huis in SafarituineRUSTENBURG HERALD – RUSTENBURG – ‘n 45-jarige man is vroeg verlede week in hegtenis geneem nadat polisie op ‘n huis in Safarituine toegeslaan het.

VERVALSTE DRANK, VUURWAPEN EN AMMUNISIE GEVIND

Lede van die Phokeng K9-eenheid het omstreeks 21:00 Dinsdagaand (18 Augustus) met ‘n deursoekingsbevel by die huis opgedaag nadat hul inligting oor moontlike kriminele bedrywighede by die woning ontvang het. Vervalste drank ter waarde van byna R400 000, ‘n ongelisensieerde vuurwapen en onwettige ammunisie is gevind.

Die polisie het ook afgekom op rolle nagemaakte dranketikette. Die verdagte het toe boonop glo probeer om ‘n polisiebeampte om te koop deur hom R6000 aan te bied.

Die man, Wengqing Weng het Maandag (24 Augustus) in die hof verskyn en is op R5000 borg vrygelaat. Die saak is tot 29 September uitgestel.

Van die vervalsde drank wat verlede week in ‘n woning in Safarituine gevind is. ‘n 45-jarige man is in hegtenis geneem.

RUSTENBURG HERALD – RUSTENBURG – A 36-year-old man died last week after the Toyota Fortuner he was driving collided head-on with a VW Polo.

The accident happened on Tuesday evening (18 August) at around 23:30 about 10 km outside of Derby on the road to Rustenburg.

According to Rustenburg Police spokesperson, Capt Elsabé Augoustides, Elias Velapi Nduli was travelling from Ventersdorp to Midrand when his Fortuner collided with the VW Polo driven by Patrick Seropa (47). Seropa, from Thlabane West, was travelling to Ventersdorp when the accident occurred.

Nduli succumbed to his injuries on the scene, while Seropa was taken to a hospital in Rustenburg for treatment.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by the police.

252 arrested in the provinceRUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - In an endeavour to bring alleged crime perpetrators to book, detectives in the province arrested 252 suspects between Tuesday (18 August) and Thursday (20 August), for different crimes during provincial raiding operation.

According to provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda Funani, of the 252 arrests, 129 were for contact crimes such as murder, rape, assaults with intent to do grievous bodily harm, common robbery, sexual assault, assault common and attempted rape.

The other suspects were nabbed for various other crimes such as malicious damage to property, contravention of protection order, theft, burglary residential and business and stock theft. The suspects were arrested at all four districts within the province and most of them have already appeared before courts within the province while others were expected to appear on Monday (24 August).

The North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena commended detectives for the arrests and indicated that operations such as this one will continue, to ensure that criminals are apprehended.

DA persistence results in the installation of 3-million litre water reservoir

quite some time. At times the situation was so bad that residents in the area were often stranded without water for extended periods of time. DA councillors and residents raised the issue with the municipality as far back as 2005, and in 2008 the item was added to the agenda for a new water reservoir to be approved by Council. Unfortunately, there was no further action taken, the DA followed up and continued to put pressure on each administration to address this. In 2017, the issue was raised in council and Rustenburg Local Municipality Mayor Mpho Khunou undertook to make a provision for the reservoir in the 2019/2020 budget. However, due to a downturn in the economy, this could not be fulfilled. The issue was then raised with the National Department of Water which intervened, the work was commissioned in June 2020 and completed on 31 July 2020. The new reservoir has a 3-million litre water capacity and will be able to service the area for many years to come. It is unfortunate that residents had to wait so long to have access to a dependable water supply. The municipality needs to act with urgency when addressing service delivery concerns, instead of waiting for residents to escalate matters or protest, Mr Martin Coetzee, DA Councillor of Ward 17 said. This supply of water will ensure that the community no longer suffers from extended water interruptions. The DA will continue to work hard to ensure that residents receive quality services, Coetzee concluded.

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Following pressure from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and community members, Rustenburg Local Municipality and National Department of Water have developed a new reservoir to supply water to parts of Cashan, the so-called "River area" and Safari Gardens extensions areas.

For years these areas have been plagued by water interruptions, the areas were serviced by a 240-kilolitres steel tank. Due to the increase in the demand for water, water interruptions become a problem which bothered residents for

Rustenburg’s gardening enthusiasts can rest assured knowing that in terms of growing green fingers, they are in good hands when they are shopping at Geelhout Gardens Nursery. Geelhout Gardens and its dedicated staff have once again excelled and have been pronounced the regional winners of the South African Nursery Association’s (SANA) Retailer of the Year competition when the winners of no less than nine regions were announced. Geelhout Gardens were the winners in the North West region. Relief for community with food donationRUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG -Engen has partnered with the Gift of the Givers to provide food relief and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the community neighbouring the Engen Depot in Rustenburg.

Stepping in to help, Engen and Gift of the Givers distributed 250 pre-packed food hampers and 250 PPE masks to the community who said that whilst the national Lockdown was flattening the curve, hunger was currently their greatest concern.

Engen’s Managing Director and CEO, Yusa’ Hassan says Engen’s caring spirit drives it to step up and take proactive steps to assist vulnerable community members in these challenging times.

“We truly care for those impacted by the pandemic and we hope to bring some relief to our depot neighbours in need during the national lockdown, which has had a severe impact on many vulnerable households in the Rustenberg area,” says Hassan.

Ever mindful of its role as an agent

of positive change, Engen continues to focus on supporting organisations like the Gift of the Givers and FoodForward SA in assisting vulnerable communities. As such, Engen’s contribution to the fight against COVID-19 and the impact of the national lockdown has included a number of targeted investments. Fuel to the value of R1 million was given to FoodForward SA to power their food aid delivery vehicles in their quest to expand their distribution of nutritious food to our country’s most vulnerable people.

“While we know it will take much more to alleviate the stress that many of our neighbours are facing, we hope our contribution will make a small difference to each person who receives the comfort of a helping hand as a result of our efforts,” adds Hassan.

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - In Vrouelandbou-uniekringe (VLU) is daar skok en verbystering na die skokdood van ‘n VLU-bestuurslid Sondagoggend omstreeks 11:00.

Die bekende VLU-persoonlikheid, ma en eggenote, Annemarie van Niekerk (53) van Derby is op slag gedood toe die voertuig waarin sy ‘n passasier was, in ‘n kop-aan-kop-botsing met ‘n swaarvragmotor betrokke was. Mev Van Niekerk se eggenoot (Koos 55) is in ‘n ernstige toestand in ‘n Rustenburgse hospitaal opgeneem.

Annemarie was voorsitter van die Derby-VLU en vise-voorsitter van die Platinastreek.

Volgens die woordvoerder van die polisie in Rustenburg, kaptein Elsabé Augoustides, was die Van Niekerk-egpaar in hul ligte Nissan 200-bakkie onderweg vermoedelik op pad terug na Derby, toe hulle in die botsing betrokke was. Die vragmotor was van Johannesburg na Rustenburg onderweg, het kapt Augoustides gesê. Die bestuurder van die vragmotor, Samuel Mocheche, sou allerlei besittings van Zimbabwiese-burgers wat graag na hul land wou terugkeer, hier kom oplaai. Die presiese oorsaak van die ongeluk is nie bekend nie. Die vragmotor was na bewering egter enkele oomblikke voor die noodlottige ongeluk, ook betrokke in ‘n ligte botsing met ‘n Volkwagen Tiguan wat in dieselfde rigting as die vragmotor gereis het. Die bestuurder van die Tiguan, Solomon Moseamedi, is nie beseer nie.

Permanent hearing loss (not deafness) is untreatable but can be managed by use of hearing aids, which can be obtained from the Audiology Department at Job Shimankana Tabane Hospital. “The Audiology Department intends to specifically target stigmas and

myths surrounding people who are hard of hearing or deaf. People who are hard of hearing often choose not to wear their hearing aids in public because, unlike spectacles, it is considered unattractive and community members tease them. We would like to advise

the community that loss of hearing comes as natural as loss of sight, there is absolutely no shame in wearing hearing

Audiology Department frequently receives complaints of disobedient children that ‘refuse’ to listen or follow instructions. At times that might be the reason, but often it may be due to an undiagnosed hearing loss. Has your bank data been stolen?Experian, a consumer credit reporting

company, said on Wednesday (19 August) that it experienced a breach of data which has exposed some personal information of as many as 24 million South Africans, and 793,749 business entities, to a suspected fraudster.

The breach has been reported to authorities, and South African banks have been working with Experian and South African Banking Risk Centre (Sabric) to identify which of their customers may have been exposed to the breach and to protect their personal information, even as the investigation unfolds.

“Our investigations indicate that an individual in South Africa, purporting to represent a legitimate client, fraudulently requested services from Experian,” the company said in a statement.

“The services involved the release of information which is provided in the ordinary course of business or which is publicly

available.”“We can confirm that no consumer credit

or consumer financial information was obtained. Our investigations do not indicate that any misappropriated data has been used for fraudulent purposes.”

Experian added that its investigations show that the suspect had intended to use the data to create marketing leads to offer insurance and credit-related servicesCustomers are urged to remain vigilant

Ready for some fun in the Sun (City)?

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Sun City, the biggest single tourism industry employer in the North West province, will officially reopen for business NEXT Wednesday.

This comes after South Africa relaxed Covid-19 restrictions to allow for inter-provincial leisure travel under alert Level 2. Sun International confirmed that the resort, which employs around 3300 people, will be opening its doors again on 2 September.

Sun International group COO for hospitality Graham Wood welcomed the move to Level 2, which was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Saturday. Considering that “the large majority of Sun City’s visitors are from outside North West” province, Wood is especially pleased that inter-provincial travel is now allowed. “To say we are delighted by this news would be an understatement. With inter-provincial travel restrictions lifted our tourist hotels and resorts such as Sun City Resort will finally be able to reopen.“It is unfortunate that the curfew could not be further relaxed, but we are grateful and relieved that our restaurants can again serve alcohol,” he added.

Sun City was the only casino resort within Sun International’s 12 gaming properties in South Africa that has not been trading since casinos were permitted to operate under Level 3 from July. Sun International is also yet to reopen its standalone hotel properties, which include the landmark Table Bay Hotel at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront and the Maslow Hotel in Sandton.

More reopenings on the cardsThe group decided not to reopen these hotels

or the expansive Sun City resort as it “did not making financial sense” due to the ban on inter-provincial and international travel under Level 3. With the former now allowed, the group is considering reopening these hotels as well, even though international tourism is still banned. “Most of our casinos have been operating since 1 July and customers have been very supportive, but the curfew has hurt our business by reducing operating hours at a time when numbers on the floor already had to be limited, so we are hopeful that this can be relaxed or lifted soon,” Wood said. “Our current health and safety protocols will remain in place, and all Sun International properties now bear the World Travel and Tourism Council’s safe stamp of approval, verifying that the Covid-19 health and safety protocols we have in place meet international benchmarks,” he concluded.

Psychological aggression is the use of verbal and non-verbal communication with the intent to harm another person mentally or emotionally and/or to exert control over another person.

Some of the grades haven’t been in class since the end of March this year. According to the new regulations, those in grades R, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10 and 11 will return as will pupils attending Schools of Skill in years 1, 2 and 3.

"The department is ready," said Basic Education Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga. "You will remember that schools have been running from 3 August with Grade 12s, the Grade 7s the following week and non-teaching staff returned on the 17th. "That means that the system has already been warm and people were already in offices to prepare for the number of grades that are returning." There are concerns about a lack of resources and fears that the school's nutrition

programme won't be ready to be rolled out. "With pupils returning now, it should be easier to handle the programme because the programme is a school-based programme," Mhlanga said. "With learners coming back, we should be able to feed all learners that benefit the programme." Education expert Professor Mary Metcalfe said what’s important now is supporting all those involved in the education system. “Teachers have got an enormous amount of work to do in planning their teaching," she said. "What they teach as school can be reinforced by what children will practice at home. Which means teachers will have to do much more preparation for supporting learning at home.”

When you ask a famous chef like Gordon Ramsey what some of his favourite childhood food memories are, he is quick to answer that it must be his mom’s shepherd’s pie, roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding.This week Zandra Emmanuel of Safari Gardens, Rustenburg will share her authentic recipe for this English staple. Zandra first travelled the world as an air hostess, before working for Sol Kerzner in the 1970”s at the dawning of Sun International. She later worked very closely with Nelson Mandela as a public Relations professional and counts Madiba as one of her mentors. Born a Miss Coetzee, Zandra married an Englishman and moved to Yorkshire where her mother-in-law made sure the new

Method:

Pre-heat oven to 220°.Beat the eggs thoroughly until foamy.Add milk and mix again.Add flour, salt and pepper.Mix until the mixture resembles a thin pancake mixture.In a muffin pan, put a teaspoon of oil in each pocket.Put the muffin pan in the pre-heated oven in order for the oil to get boiling hot.Remove from the oven and half fill muffin tin pockets with mixture.Return the muffin tin to the oven and bake for 20 minutes.

Daar word elke jaar sonder uitsondering voorsiening gemaak vir ‘n behoorlike begroting wat onder meer salarisverhogings vir raadslede insluit maar waarin ongetwyfeld meer verdienstelike sake soos instandhouding en opgradering van belangrike infrastruktuur agterweë gelaat word. Rustenburgse motoriste sal loshande in die meeste gevalle nie huiwer om saam te stem dat veral ons padverkeerstoestande en ‘n oënskynlike tekort/gebrek aan doodeenvoudige verkeersinspekteurs en patrollering oor die afgelope vyf ses jaar veel te wense oorlaat. As ons mense rondom ons kyk, kan ons talle voorbeelde van tekortkoming in infrastruktuur en instandhouding identifiseer. Ons kan almal baat by ‘n Rustenburgse Verkeersafdeling wat sy gemeenskap tot eer strek en ‘n belangrike bydrae lewer om ten minste darem ‘n betekenisvolle bydrae te lewer om Rustenburgse belastingbetalers ‘n beter ondervinding op ons paaie en algemene verkeers- en veiligheidstoestande te bied.

As ons trouens, die afgelope paar jaar reeds om ons kyk, is dit moeilik om te sien hoekom nog ‘n reeks salarisverhogings vir raadslede ‘n oorweging, wat nog te sê van ‘n prioriteit, is. Daar is geen manier waarop daar aangevoer kan word dat raadslede noodwendig in hierdie uitdagende tye ‘n “redelike” salarisverhoging

verdien terwyl ons infrastruktuur rondom ons meestal buite werking is of totaal en al ontbreek nie. Enigiemand sal jou kan vertel dat die oorgrote meerderheid van Rustenburg se gemeenskap in elk geval die afgelope seker vyf jaar al ‘n uiters “konserwatiewe begroting” handhaaf en dat enige onkostes tot op die been gesny word. Mense, is dit dan nie letterlik ‘n geval van lewe en dood nie?

Hoe kan ons in hierdie tye salarisverhoging vir raadslede oorweeg terwyl daar verkeersligte is wat nou al maande nie werk nie, half omgery is, slaggate ons paaie gevaarlik maak, padverkeersmerke ontbreek terwyl straatligte nou al vir seker tien jaar dag in, dag uit onnodig brand? Die vraag mag naïef klink, maar het die munisipaliteit al ooit ‘n opname gemaak van die hoeveelheid krag en geld wat sodoende en op ander maniere vermors word? Kon daar nie maar eers ‘n besparing bewerkstellig word voordat nog ‘n rits salarisverhogings goedgekeur word nie? Hoe lank kerm die Rustenburgse publiek al oor die onnodige vermorsing van krag en kosbare geld en kan daar juis in die lig van die voorgaande gereken word dat Rustenburgse raadslede inderdaad ‘n verhoging verdien terwyl hulle as’t ware vir jare al die klagtes en bekommernisse van die Rustenburgse Gemeenskap ignoreer?

Komaan man, niemand het nog ooit die twak van ‘n wêreldklas-stad geglo nie, hoekom probeer ons nie liewer ‘n aanvaarbare een bou nie?

The Rustenburg Municipality will do well to, probably for the first time in quite a long time, attempt a proper calculation of broken or lacking infrastructure in and around our little town. We couldn’t help to notice, but every year more or less in April, provision is made in every year’s municipal budget for an increase in the salaries of Councillors. This happens almost invariably, while it is evident that as a municipality, we have quite a few issues that need to be addressed which is not necessarily going to cost an arm and a leg.

Just for once however, a selfless gesture by Councillors to let the opportunity pass without increases (as our very own President has demonstrated more than once) would be prove a worthwhile investment.

Going without salary increases every now and then to allow for attention to minor eyesores in and around town (if Rustenburg’s municipal budget is in that much restraint?) wouldn’t be a bad idea.

It is not pleasing to see broken or lacking road traffic infrastructure and road markings when we take to the roads every morning. There are so many traffic lights that are not in working condition, so many road traffic signs in a bad state of disrepair while numerous potholes are a real threat to road safety.

What probably bothers most people, is the fact that apparently, thousands of rand in electricity charges go to waste every single day that dozens of streetlights are burning unnecessarily day in and day out. After all these years of almost constant complaining, the Rustenburg public’s concerns about street lights are largely still blatantly ignored, yet, the Rustenburg Municipality will not let the opportunity pass to approve salary increases for Councillors.

What is quite evident to the general motorist, is the obvious lack of a proper Traffic Department. Those men in uniform are seen along the road once in a blue moon but are hardly ever visible after hours or should we say after 16:00? This is not a sign of a municipality who cares about the safety of its motorists and especially rate payers. If there is a problem in manpower, please let us know? We are sure there would be hundreds of available candidates who would be quite willing and equipped to do what is required, in spite of perhaps being an ordinary Indian again, and not necessarily a Chief?

Come on man, nobody has ever believed that nonsense about a “world class city” - why don’t we at least attempt to build an acceptable one instead?

Op 15 Augustus 2020 het ek geld getrek by Sasol Garage (hoek van Boven- en Pres Mbeki) toe ‘n man van agter af knoppies druk en my kaart so steel.

Ek was in so groot skok en is jou ewig dankbaar dat jy my dadelik gehelp het om my kaart te stop en kalm gemaak het.

I am writing this letter as the last resort because we have engaged the Rustenburg Local Municipality team on this matter with no success.

About month ago we reported a water leak in Zinniaville in Mangaan Street.

Currently we are still sitting with the problem and it has gotten even worse.

We followed the proper channels in reporting this and we were given a reference number of 90200.

To this day when we call the municipality to do a follow up we are unable to get help. In the meantime clean drinkable water is being wasted, this despite warnings from the municipality to use water sparingly.

The editorOn Monday evening (24 August) a

major pipe occurred in Tlhabane at the corner of Mokgethi and Mokale Street. The pipe is the main pipe from the Reservoir and you can imagine how strong the pressure is.

The incident was reported to the Rustenburg Local Municipality when it occurred on Monday night at 21:00, now it is Tuesday afternoon and the incident hasn’t been resolved.

Millions and millions of litres of fresh water are being wasted and the sad part is that most of the houses are under water, which poses a risk because they can collapse.

We hope someone from the Municipality will see this letter and do something about this.

Skole trap fiets vir hul personeel

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Leerders, oud-leerders en toekomstige leerders, asook vriende en familie word uitgenooi om hierdie projek te ondersteun. Laerskole Rustenburg, Vastrap, Proteapark en David Brink se onderwysers ondersteun Solidariteit se #TrapSaam-inisiatief en gaan fietstrap van Rustenburg tot in Port Elizabeth op 12 September by Just Gym Planet Fitness Life Style Centre.

“Ons gaan saam staan (eerder saam fietsry) om geld in te samel vir onderwysers wat deur die skole se beheerliggame betaal word. In hierdie tye het skole nie meer die voldoende fondse om hierdie beheerliggaamposte se salarisse onbepaald te onderhou terwyl ouers uitdagings ervaar om hul skoolfondsverpligtinge na te kom nie. Hierdie poste is noodsaaklik om ons klasgroepe minder as 35 leerders te hou,” het die hoofde van die skole aangedui.

Die skole se onderwysers gaan saam ’n virtuele fietsrymarathon aflê. Deelnemers begin die lang trap om 09:00 en beoog om teen 16:00 hul “bestemming” te bereik. Belangstellendes wat ’n donasie wil maak kan die skole help deur per kilometer te borg. Besoek die #TrapSaam Facebook blad van Solidariteit om 'n donasie aan die skool van u keuse te maak. Musiek gee haar vlerkeRUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - Sy sing al vandat sy in gr 1 was. "Eintlik al baie vroeër as dit," lag ma Juanita. "Sy was nog skaars 'n baksteen hoog, toe moet ons vir haar 'n verhoog in haar kamer bou."

Vandag is Amoré du Plessis op die nippertjie van haar sang-droom bewaarheid. Dié graad 11-leerder van die Hoërskool Rustenburg is tans deel van die "Sing Aanlyn"- kompetisie en word deur 'n deurwinterde kunstenaar gementor om die beste van haar sangtalent te maak. Indien jy verlede jaar die video gesien het van die koor van die Hoërskool Rustenburg met hul byna ongelooflike weergawe van die rockgroep Queen se Bohemian Rhapsody, sou jy Amoré daar gesien het. Sy was ook een van die solo-sterre tydens die skool se vorige revue. "Ek hou van 'n wye verskeidenheid musiek. Eintlik is dit eenvoudig: ek hou van enige musiek wat emosie by my ontlok."

Amoré het ook al 'n hele paar van haar eie musiekvideo's op Youtube. Die kunstigheid en kwaliteit van dié produksies is treffend. "Jy sal my nie glo nie, maar meeste van die tyd is dit net ek en my ma wat dit skiet. En dan 'toor''n baie goeie vriend, SD Jacobs so bietjie vir die eindproduk," lag Amoré. Die verwerking van die musiek is weer 'n ander vriend, Hano van der Walt se handewerk. Hano is ook Amoré se duet sangmaat. Tot nou toe het Amoré meestal 'covers'van bekende liedjies gedoen, maar sy het nou begin om self lirieke te pen. Hano help met die toonset van dié lirieke en die twee hoop om eersdaags met hierdie oorspronklike liedjies te kan spog. Ja, Covid-19 het ook maar baie met haar jaar gemors, maar Amoré het aan haar drome en ideale vasgehou en deur die grendelstaat haar fokus op haar doelwit gehou. "Musiek is al wat ek met my lewe wil doen. Natuurlik is my eerste, tweede en derde keuse om te kan werk as kunstenaar, maar as daar iets onoorbrugbaars gebeur, sal ek graag as musiekterapeut wil werk," vertel Amoré. Save the date for the Konka Farm Run 2021

RUSTENBURG HERALD - RUSTENBURG - The event organizers have taken the decision to cancel the 2020 edition of the Konka Farm Run that was scheduled to take place this coming Saturday 29 August 2020. They hope that all runners and walkers will continue to train to make next year’s 3rd edition a celebration of health and wellness. Courage to ChangeCourage to Change will be hosting its first annual fun hike to raise funds for addicts who do not have the means to seek rehabilitation. The event will be held at Loerkop Adventures Rustenburg on 5 September 2020 with 5 trails to choose from which will run all day. For the extreme hikers they will have the "Only The Brave" Trail starting at 07:00 which is 8km with a 350m steep climb. Food stalls will be available along with raffles so bring cash for the day. For those who have socially friendly dogs, bring them along on a leash. All proceeds go

The winners were as follows: First Johan le Grange and Jacques Bezuidenhout with 78 points, second Piers Halton and Vic van der Merwe with 72 points, third Isaac Makhoana and Shadrack Molefe with 71 points, fourth Brian O' Connor and Piers Halton with 70 points. The longest day went to Alan Olivier and JC Coetzer with 43 points. The next competition will be held on Sunday 6 September 2020 which will be an IPS Competition.
