One important finding from the audit was that a number of tanks, some of which were pressure vessels, had not been inspected for decades. Since the contents of the tanks were harmful substances, tank inspections were required to ensure the safe operation of the facility. INITIAL CONDITION The facility had not performed any tank inspections, nor were there any drawings for most of the tanks. In total, the facility had over 25 large storage tanks along with more dangerous equipment such as air receivers. ANALYSIS Induspec developed a software tool which outlined a detailed inspection process, modelled after the API 653 protocol. Induspec worked with the operation to develop a reasonable schedule for the work which included tank cleaning and scaffold erection. In addition, Induspec obtained Confined Space Supervisor certification, along with regular confined space training. Induspec invested in the required safety and communication equipment so that Induspec could perform the entire scope of work to minimize overall cost and complexity. OUTCOME Over the course of two years, Induspec performed extensive tank cleaning and inspection services to the client. Induspec utilized visual and photographic tools, laser levels, ultrasonic thickness gauges and dye penetrant testing along with finite element analysis of structural members to offer a very complete inspection service to the client. FINDINGS Over the course of the tank inspections, issues were identified and corrective designs were formulated. Induspec managed the corrective work portion and provided final reports which were sealed by a Professional Engineer licensed to practice in the Province of Ontario. Through this ongoing program, Induspec helped the client to bring their tank program back into compliance with corporate initiatives and good industrial practices. RECOMMENDATIONS The client was so pleased with Induspec’s ongoing tank inspection service that they recommended Induspec to a sister plant in southern Ontario. Induspec was fortunate to provide a variety of tank inspection, energy consulting and other engineering services to said sister facility for a number of years. Gallery Tank Inspections 1
