SituationTanat House stands in the picturesque village of Llanyblodwel, approximately six miles south of Oswestry. The Grade I listed parish church of St Michael the Archangel was heavily rebuilt in the mid 19th century to designs by its then vicar, the Rev. John Parker. The design has been referred to in the Pevsner Architectural Guides as “bizarre”, but “unforgettable”, particularly the octagonal tower, which was apparently modelled on that of Freiburg Minster.

Tanat House is well placed for key towns including Oswestry and Shrewsbury, as well as the M54 leading east to the Midlands and the M6. Shrewsbury Train Station is on the Manchester/Cardiff line including regular trains to Birmingham with links to London Stations.

There are a number of well regarded schools in the area including Moreton Hall, Oswestry School, Packwood Haugh, Adcote School, Ellesmere College and Shrewsbury School and Shrewsbury High School.

DescriptionThe pretty Georgian facade of Tanat House is particularly appealing and offers an elegant and pleasing approach through a white gate to a sweeping gravel drive.

Dating back to the 18th Century, it is evident the house has earlier origins. The original features include oak sash windows with original shutters, oak floors and decorative cornicing whilst oak doors provide access to a majority of the rooms.

AccommodationA portico shelters the part glazed front door which opens into the hall with its fine oak staircase. Doors lead off to the dining room which has fitted book shelves and a fireplace with marbled and mantle surround. The drawing room is an elegant space, also with an open fireplace and oak floor. The original tiled floor runs throughout the back of the house linking the sitting room and rear hall with a back door into the courtyard and a door to the cellar under the back staircase.

The kitchen/breakfast room has a recessed two oven Aga, original cupboards and drawers either side and a shuttered window overlooking the courtyard to the rear of the property. Off the kitchen/breakfast room is a large scullery, the larder and a further door leading out into the courtyard. The conservatory overlooks and leads out onto the garden through double doors.

The landing on the first floor is naturally lit by an octagonal cupola which is a wonderful feature. The master bedroom has a dressing room and an en suite bathroom. The guest bedroom is at the front of the house with an en suite bathroom.

Two bedrooms at the back of the house overlook the courtyard. The back staircase leads to the second floor where there are two more rooms, currently used as overflow bedrooms with the potential to be used as alternative accommodation.

The Courtyard The cobbled courtyard is accessed directly off the lane to the side of the property. The original single storey buildings around the yard comprise a boiler room, tank room, garage, log room with loft above, original stables and stalls, garden storerooms and a small cobbled sheltered yard. A carport is beside the house.

The GardensThe gardens are quintessentially of a property such as Tanat House, bordered throughout by stone walls. Roped trellising and laurel hedging top the walls at the front of the house whilst the main garden runs along the back of the church with views across to the fields beyond. At the far end there is a vegetable garden. Mature borders have been well maintained, planted with perennials offering beautiful colour throughout the spring and summer months. A large conifer has a Kiftsgate rose climbing through it whilst a Rambling Rector covers the garden wall.

Directions Leave Oswestry on the A483 towards Welshpool. At the Llynclys crossroads turn right onto the B4396 and continue over the old railway line. Continue on this road and after passing the junction signposted to Llansantffraid, Llanfyllin & Machynlleth on your left hand side, fork left into the village of Llanyblodwel. Tanat House stands beside the church and the entrance is through the white gate.
