This venture will include, among other things, a 14 000-seat Ellis Park-type stadium. The park currently hosts the Edenvale Sports Club, which Ward 18 councillor Heather Hart, together with local sports fraternities, has called the ”heart and soul” of the community. “Many people’s children learned to play soccer and cricket, among other sports, on the grounds,” she said. “It would be a travesty if we lost sight of what our community is about and remained silent while Council gave approval for the multi- million rand venture to go ahead.” Local sporting bodies which operate from the site have joined in petitioning against the proposed multi- million rand venture, as have residents who share Clr Hart’s sentiments. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s spokesperson Themba Radebe told the tame TIMES Council was in agreement that the best use of the land in question was for sports and recreation facilities. He stipulated, however, that the current sports and recreations facilities on the land would be enhanced, through the development of a stadium, a gymnasium, hotels (or similar accommodation), additional sports facilities and the upgrading of current facilities and sports academies. He said the cost of the above-mentioned facilities had yet to be ascertained. “The community will benefit from these world-class sports facilities, which are in alignment with the Metro’s aims for urban regeneration.” He said no objections had yet been received from the public. Meanwhile, Clr Hart had said the item for the new facility was not likely to be come to Council this year so there was more time for residents to sign the growing petition. She remains adamant the proposed venture is completely “misplaced. A massive stadium would be a great bridging structure between the communities of Kempton and Tembisa, for example. This would also fit in with Council’s aims to bridge communities through this kind of facility. But in the heart of the Edenvale community?” For information on the petition, contact active. The ladies of the Bedfordview Tudor Rose Ladies Club welcomed in the festive season with great aplomb at

their Christmas luncheon at the Jeppe Quondam Club in Bedfordview last week.

This is the 37th year the club has celebrated Christmas in such style and many of the members are firm friends, having watched the club transform and grow over the years to become the successful endeavour it is today.

FESTIVE AMBIENCE: Music provided a festive retreat for guests to the event.

DEDICATED: Tudor Rose president Lynn Joyce with Beryl Martin

JOLLY: Vanessa Bailey (vice president), Bettina Pittner and Ute Kurz

COMMITTED: Zactor Tamboorga helped serve the ladies on the day.

There’s nothing like a group of friends or relatives to help you to remember who you are. They have an uncanny way of seeing past the “you” affected by time and change, to the true you. In the same way, it takes a dedicated community of residents to look at a road pitted with potholes and an overgrown, littered pavement, and see in this the area they have always known and loved. In the story of The Little Prince, the prince befriends a rose. She is one among a field of other roses and to the observer, she is identical to all the others. But then the prince starts to care for her. He realizes she’s an objectionable rose. She can be particularly grumpy. And those caterpillars … still, his love for her grows as he invests his time and effort in her, pruning and watering her.At the end, he confesses that she is the most beautiful rose of all (despite her caterpillars and thorns) and different to the rest, because she is his rose. He has cared for her: he has removed the caterpillars from her leaves and watered her every day.Hopefully, when you look at Edenvale and Bedfordview, you see something in them that the casual observer may not see at all. It’s what we invest of ourselves in a community that makes it “home” and different to every other area, at least in our own eyes. When we embrace this heart for home, we become empowered and effective in restoring what has been damaged through challenges like poor service provision and inadequate manpower (see page 5).In my interview with Ward 20 councillor Jill Humphreys this week, she said, “We can fold our arms and be unhappy about the status quo, or we can roll up our sleeves and be proactive in continuing to care for the community in our own strength, despite perceived injustices.”This isn’t to say that residents should give up their fight in demanding their rights, among these, sufficient service and provision. Still, waiting on local authorities doesn’t mean falling into complacency. Many residents have taken the initiative to care for their surroundings. See the story about a local resident whose awareness has sparked interest from local authorities in protecting a great old tree in the Bedfordview area (page 3).The time and effort you invest in something is what makes your “rose” more beautiful than the rest.

Local residents have started a petition in a bid to save a stately Pepper tree on a property at the corner of Boeing Road East and Marais Road, Bedfordview, near the Italian Club. The tree is a magnificent witness of Bedfordview’s heritage and while it is not indigenous, many are of the opinion that it deserves to be saved - but it is on a site where a multi-storey complex will soon be built.“The trend is to preserve indigenous trees, while cutting down alien plants,” explained ward 20 councillor Jill Humphreys, who explained the tree was not indigenous, which was probably why developers had overlooked the need to protect it.“What people don’t realize is that many of the trees which we love in the area, including those that line Van Buuren Road, are not in fact indigenous. Still, they have become a part of our story and heritage. The tree doesn’t know that it isn’t indigenous,” she continued. “It just sits there, demanding respect and attention.”Bedfordview resident Angelique Joseph who first brought the tree to the attention of the tame TIMES, said she noticed the tree because it was just five minutes away from where she stayed and near the gym where she trained every day. “It is so magnificent, we can’t possibly let it be cut down without a fight.” She said the site developer had been cooperative and had said his team would replant six of the indigenous trees but she was concerned about the Pepper tree.Clr Humphreys, also an avid gardener, said the construction efforts on the site would affect the root system of a tree. “Usually you can tell what kind of root system a tree has by looking at its shape above the ground. The root system tends to mirror the shape of the tree above the ground. Should developers have a change

of heart, a tree specialist would be able to make the necessary adjustments above the ground to accommodate for the fact that roots might have been damaged during construction.”Clipping branches, so that there is less for the damaged roots to nourish, would alleviate the strain on the tree and possibly save it, she said.

Residents with knowledge of the historic heritage of the Bedfordview area, including trees in the area, can email [email protected]. Residents wanting to sign the petition to save the Pepper tree can email [email protected].

A woman (21) was raped while at work at a Van Buuren Road centre after making a firm stand against infidelity.

Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, Bedfordview spokesman,

said the young woman had been on cleaning duty at the centre on 15 November when she was approached by her

29-year-old supervisor and asked to clean the

storeroom, at around 11:30. When she went into the storeroom to clean up, he followed her and confessed his romantic feelings for her. She refused to reciprocate his love, adamant she would not have a relationship with a married man; but he subsequently raped her.The woman reported the incident and the supervisor was arrested by the Bedfordview police and charged with rape.

Residents are warned to report lost and stolen ID documents and bank cards immediately to prevent fraud. This warning comes after numerous arrests were made by Bedfordview police for fraud over the past week.Bedfordview police spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi told the tame TIMES there were many big malls in the Bedfordview area and on average, two to three incidents of fraud per mall were reported to the Bedfordview police each week. He gave two examples of recent unrelated incidents which occurred within the same centre. In the first incident on 13 November at around 14:00 a man purchased around R15 000 worth of clothing at a 10 percent discount from an upmarket clothing store at

the centre, using a bank card to make the purchases. “After making the transaction, the store attendant received a call from the bank’s service provider notifying her that the card in question had been stolen,” said Sergeant Nhlabathi. The situation was investigated and the man was arrested and charged with fraud. In a separate incident, the following day a man tried to loan R36 000 from a bank in the centre using a falsified ID document. Suspicions arose when the bank attendant noted many spelling errors on the document. The attendant called the forensic department of the police which, after checking the document, ascertained that it was fraudulent. The man was arrested and as in the first incident, charged with fraud.“Fraud affects everyone in the community,” said Sergeant Nhlabathi, giving as an example the effect fraud has on the amount of interest banks charged their clients.

Elderly residents of the Edenvale community were honoured at a specially organized Christmas luncheon at the Fahrenheit Seafood & Grill restaurant in Edenvale last week. Organized by the Edenvale Community Policing Forum (ECPF) and well supported by the community, the event was part of an initiative to uplift the area’s senior citizens, acknowledging them as a vital part of the community. Organizer and ECPF chairperson Linda McKenzie

said local residents and businesses had been generous with sponsorship, among them, Fahrenheit Seafood & Grill which provided a full three-course meal for each guest, and the Lethabong Taxi Association, which offered a lift service on the day.Guest Edith Thirlwell told the tame TIMES the occasion was “absolutely delightful” and her friend, Pauline Jenkins explained, “This is ‘the’ day of the year.” They sat at a table overlooking the busy Terrace Road alongside the restaurant, with their "girlfriends." The ladies laughed, asking whether the camera had special effects to make everyone look younger. Still, despite faces softened and wrinkled from years of

memories, the guests made for a beautiful snapshot of some of Edenvale’s most honourable residents.“The elderly citizens are the ones who cared for us growing up,” said McKenzie. “Many of them are experts in different professions – some architects, others legal secretaries. They have a wealth of wisdom inside of them. We need them to build Edenvale into a compassionate, successful community.”She said this was the second year the Christmas event had been held at the restaurant and she was amazed by the way the community had opened its heart to the senior citizens. In true Oprah Winfrey Show-style, each guest was given a special

goodie bag under their chairs to take home and enjoy.

The news that six top officials from the Department of Roads and Stormwater have been suspended has raised concerns from Bedfordview residents. These concerns were voiced at a recent public meeting concerning the condition of Oriel, Bedfordview. The meeting was chaired by ward 20 councillor Jill Humphreys, with over 50 residents in attendance and focused on the condition of the Oriel stream, and roads and pavements in the area.Councillor Bill Rundle, DA spokesperson for Roads and Stormwater, attended the meeting and said already R8,7 million had been spent by Council on the upkeep of the area, as part of a three-phase project for Oriel. He said the third phase of the project, a R4 million venture, was still to be completed.Ward officials at the meeting alleged the suspension of the six top officials had placed the Council operations “in limbo.” Clr Rundle said phase 3 of the Oriel project included the attenuation of storm water structures in the open space areas between Kloof and Bothma Roads. The tame TIMES had not yet received comment from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality at the time of going to press.

CLEAN UP: Oriel Park is among the areas which residents have highlighted as needing attention and care.

Qualified instructor Martie Spanenburg and her zumbathon team will lead a zumba charity fundraising event at the Meadowdale branch of appliance retailer Hirsch’s (Herman Road, Meadowdale) on 13 December, from 11:00 to 12:00. A similar event will be held at the Boksburg branch of Hirsch’s on the same day, from 9:00 to 10:00. Residents are encouraged to attend the event, to party their way to fitness while supporting local charities.Spanenburg, a qualified zumba instructress, described zumba as a feel-good, fun dance programme. She told the tame TIMES that since its inception in 2001, the fitness craze had grown to become the world’s largest – and most successful – dance-fitness programme. “More than 12 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages take weekly zumba classes in over 110 000 locations across more than 125 countries,” she said. The benefits of the dancing sport are numerous: among them, better quality of health and fitness and friendship opportunities within the zumba family. “Every class is a party,” she said. She said instructors go through rigorous training to become official zumba practitioners and that it was very important to attend classes with a qualified instructor. She explained a number of zumba options were available. Among them are aqua zumba (in the pool), zumba toning, zumba gold (for mature adults), and zumba kids. Event organizer, Hirsch’s Boksburg branch’s public relations officer Brigitte Thysse, said zumba had been chosen by the company to raise money as it was a fun and exciting way to support local charities. She said a similar zumbathon initiative had been hosted by the Hirsch’s Boksburg branch in 2012, and R3 000 had been raised on the day through double zumbathon sessions.
