Home owners are warned to be vigilant about home security following a spate of house robberies in the Edenvale area.Crime prevention officer from the Edenvale Police Station Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts has confirmed that house robberies have become more prevalent in the area and said that in many of the incidents criminals had taken advantage of “soft targets,” like domestic workers and senior citizens.Lieutenant Colonel Roberts said negligence was often a precursor to such crimes: “People have the belief, ‘It won’t happen to me’ and become complacent about locking doors and keeping security gates closed at all times,” he said.He has advised residents to be aware of what is happening around them and to keep gates and doors locked at all times.He also encouraged residents to get to

know their neighbours. “In this way, when a suspicious car is parked next door or down the road, you will be more likely to pay attention to it and take the necessary crime p r e v e n t a t i v e steps.”He said many of the robberies had occurred in enclosed areas where residents tended to be more complacent about security because they perceived their boomed-off street as inaccessible to criminals.

An interest in the area’s natural heritage was brought into the spotlight with the recent finding of a dead genet - a cat-like member of the civet family - in Modderfontein Road, just past the Edenvale Hospital. This kind of wildlife is not foreign to the area, according to Modderfontein Conservation Society spokesperson Robbie Vermont, who is actively involved in conservation of the Modderfontein area and its surrounds. He said that a troop of vervet monkeys had been observed living near the Edenvale Hospital and that wild animals like jackals, duikers and leguaans were resident in the Modderfontein area. “In some parts

of Modderfontein, you can hear the call of jackals at night,” he said. He said the area also had over 285 species of birds.It would seem developers in the area are mindful of protecting its beautiful heritage. Usman Aly, spokesperson for the Zendai Heartland development, which is scheduled to unfold over the coming 15 years, said that the project planners had taken every necessary precaution to protect the natural reserve area of Modderfontein. “Many people who live in the area, decided to invest in it because of its ‘country living’ ambience and we hope to keep it that way,” said Vermont.The Modderfontein Conservation Society holds regular talks, as well as walks through the Modderfontein Reserve. The Sunday before last a pedestrian walking along Pretoria Road in Germiston was pulled into a car by fake police officers and robbed of his valuables.The victim alleges that his ordeal began when a car with two men inside it stopped near him. The men informed him that they were police officers and needed to take him to the police station for questioning.One of the men pushed the innocent pedestrian into their vehicle and then ordered him to hand over all his valuables.

The passenger suspect became impatient with the man and started searching him, taking R320 and his cellphone.The victim noticed that his robbers had left an iPhone on the dashboard and, wanting revenge, grabbed it and threw it out of the window. Enraged by this, the suspects then grabbed the victim and pushed him out of the moving car. After detectives followed up on the leads provided by the victim, one suspect was arrested and detained at Primrose SAPS. He will appear at Germiston Court soon.

It would seem an abundance of natural wealth is right on our doorstep and the local community has been called on to step up and fight for this heritage.Ward 20 Councillor Jill Humphreys has been leading an impassioned team of community volunteers in the Taking Back the Mountain initiative, involving clean-up operations in the mountainous Bill Stewart Nature Reserve area, north of Kloof Road, Bedfordview.

An avid gardener, Humphreys said the pristine flora and fauna of the reserve were invaluable to South Africa’s natural heritage, and explained that the reserve was of geological interest, as it was an Iron Age heritage site.She said dumping and littering on the site were a concern and security measures, including fences and gates, needed improvement.For more details of the next clean-up or to help with sponsorship for the protection of the reserve area, call 082 450 0128.

It takes a community to build a radio station. Roarke Lessing, station manager of Edenvale Radio, the area’s new radio station, attributes the station’s recent successful launch to the phenomenal backing of the community.The station went on air just over ten days ago and is the brainchild of Roarke and Cheryl Lessing, Edenvale residents for the past 14 years.The Lessings have a deep love for the area with its central location and warm, friendly residents and have dedicated the station to its upliftment. Edenvale Radio is a non-profit organization, so proceeds from the project will go towards crime prevention and alleviation, unemployment and poverty issues, and providing a platform for youth and upcoming talent to develop and shine, among other goals.

Roarke said when he wrote down "start a radio station" as one of his long-term goals five years ago, he never imagined this dream would be realized so quickly.He said residents sharing his vision for a united, proactive community had come forward to support him and his wife, among them Edenvale Community Policing Forum’s chairperson Linda McKenzie.The couple is particularly excited about the response they have received following the notice of the stations’ opening. “Already the most extraordinary people, from a DIY expert to an animal behaviour specialist, have come forward, wanting to offer their expertise through the station,” said Mr Lessing.The station is streamed online from www.edenvaleradio.co.za and an app providing access to the service can be downloaded on to cellphones.“This means you can literally follow up-to- date local news from your phone around the clock,” said Mr Lessing.“There is a need for a very specific radio service in the area. There are over 70 000 residents and around 600 businesses.” He said while he was aware of many specialist radio stations in the area and its surrounds, he believed Edenvale Radio was the only station currently dedicated exclusively to the improvement of the area.“The experience has been surreal,” explained Cheryl. “When others share in your vision, it is possible to do anything.” The couple encourages local corporates and residents to “catch the wave” and support the initiative through sponsorship and volunteership. The International Water Colour Society of South Africa (IWSSA) recently held a breathtaking exhibition at the Bedford Centre in Bedfordview, showcasing works depicting Madiba, a fever tree, Graca Machel and other proudly South African themes.Among the local and international artworks on exhibition was a painting by IWSSA chairlady Cheryl Curnick entitled My First Rose. “Water colour is the most difficult medium to work with,” said Terenia Surtees, IWSSA volunteer. “It is very unforgiving, unlike other media where mistakes can easily be rectified. Still, it is the chosen medium of many of the old masters.”Dianna Daniel, a IWSSA volunteer who

assisted visitors to the exhibition, said that many of the paintings had been sold, some for as much as R13 000. The paintings of Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel were priced in the region of R4 600.“It is difficult for an artist to make a living out of art,” said Daniel. “Still, many artists love their profession so much that they brave these challenges to come out with exquisite pieces.”The event was held to promote watercolour works and to provide a platform for local artists to exhibit their masterpieces. It is not easy to get hold of Ashleigh Simon (25) during office hours. The former Holy Rosary High School learner and Edenvale resident spends hours each day honing her golfing skills. Her cellphone voicemail mes-sage neatly sums up her determination as a professional golfer: “Hi, this is Ash. I’m on the golf course making cash”.Simon is fast climbing her way to international success. She recently achieved 15th place in the LPGA Tour, her best finish as yet, and has secured her LPGA tour card for 2015.She told the tame TIMES that she was already showing natural talent on the golf course at six years of age. She said she was gifted in nu-merous sports – among them, soccer, hockey, cricket, tennis and softball - but golf always held a special place in her heart. The first time she

realised how good she really was, was when she was ten years old and started winning ju-nior tournaments. At 12 years of age she se-cured her first victory, winning the Ladies Club Championship at the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club. Despite her phenomenal success, she said she strives to remain down-to-earth: “I have found being in the limelight from time to time is fun and I’ve always surrounded myself with good friends and family to stay humble. I hope kids can look up to me and see that I am humble and friendly.” She said she had never regretted her decision to follow her pas-sion for golf: “I believe I was born with com-petitiveness in my blood and that is why I love it so much.” She now has her sights set on winning the LPGA Tour and competing in the 2016 Olympic Games.

WP wins Currie Cup

This past Saturday the Lions and Western Province (WP) competed for the 2014 Absa Currie Cup at Newlands. It was a nail-biting match, but in the end WP edged past the Lions to claim a 19-16 victory. By half-time WP was already leading 13-0, which did not predict victory for the visitors. However, the Lions fought back hard during the second half. The team scored their first penalty kick only five minutes into the second half. A try and a second penalty kick followed shortly afterwards and tied the two teams at 13-13. The Lions were relentless, but poor kicking ultimately led to the team’s demise. After WP inside centre Jaco Taute planted the first try of the match, WP was set on winning the Cup. WP has always been a strong contender for the Currie Cup: from 1982 to 1986 WP has won the Cup every year. The team last won the Currie Cup in 2012 and was set on claiming it again this year. The Lions last won this title in 2011. WP flyhalf Demetri Catrakilis was named Man of the Match for his exceptional goal-kicking, which gave the champions the edge on the scoreboard. It was a close match, but a well-deserved victory for WP. This year is the 33rd time that WP has won the Absa Currie Cup title.
