On 8 November, the much anticipated National Model of the Year Semi-Finals show took place at the Brackenpark Hall in Brackendowns. There was a special category for the Debutantes who collected R1000 or more in cash or prize sponsorships. The three overall winners who raised the most cash/prizes were Chanome Wolmarans, Gabriella Ferreira and Leonie Eiberg. They each received a beautiful crown and a Debutante sash.
This prestigious event was divided into a Junior and Senior section. They all wore black or blue standardized outfits to ensure the judging was based on modelling technique and stage presence. The six or seven top scorers from each age category will be attending the finals in mid-December at the Roodepoort Civic Centre. Figures Alberton would like to congratulate all the finalists, who modelled beautifully and definitely owned the stage.

Die Interkerklike Groep vir Afgetredenis se afsluiting het onlangs by The Mad Platter plaasgevind.

Of “Murder She Wrote: “The Tuckshop Mysteries”. Of “What lies beneath (the bunker)”. Waar is al die goeie ou reekse? Toe helde nog helde was en hulle snorre nie afgekom het wanneer hulle gaan swem het nie? Die dae van MacGyver - ‘n ou wat met twee vuurhoutjies ‘n bom kon bou of die A-Team, wie se planne altyd uitgewerk het, al het B.A. Baracus die meeste juwele aangehad wat ‘n bomplanter nog aangehad het? Waar is daardie reekse?

We are a shopfitting company based in Germiston. For the past year we have battled constantly
and we have repeatedly reported the
condition of the roads around our factory.
Even though we have reported the problem
almost weekly they have only been out here
three times in the past year.
Once they have been here the repairs only
last up to a week. There are huge holes in
the road, some of them up to 40cm deep
and one metre wide; furthermore the road is
covered in sewage due to a burst pipe up the
road. Due to this, the sewerage pipe on our
premises has blown, due to what I assume is
pressure. We have clients that come to our
premises and it is not only embarrassing,
but it is also disgusting. Clients have to ramp
pavements in order to get to our office as well
as bear the smell of sewage, not to mention
that we have to sit with the smell every day.
We pay large sums of money every month
but get no service from Ekurhuleni.
Our bills have gone from about R12000 per
month to between R18000 and R23000 per
month, and I have been fighting and querying
this for months to no avail.
Why do we as a company have to pay fees
but have to accept the fact that we cannot
drive on our roads, have to sit with pegs on
our noses every day and waste time and
money on phone calls for nothing?
tame TIMES was sent a letter by a frustrated business owner in Germiston detailing the poor conditions of the roads in his area. By the time of print, Ekurhuleni had responded and according to Themba Gadebe, the senior media manager, the issue has been attended to. Do you have any counci stories you want to bring to
Brackendowns residents are up in arms, signing objection forms and petitions against the planned facility that Life Healthcare Group wants opened where Brackendowns Shopping Centre is now situated. The shopping centre had been around for
almost 37 years and residents have been
looking forward to the new shops that were
planned when renovations started taking
place about 18 months ago. ‘’We need
shops - we don’t need a mental wellness
facility,’’ stated Bruce Dinwoodie.
Residents gathered on Saturday to fill in
petition forms, stating their reasons for their
concerns. ‘’We want to know what they
mean by ‘mental,’ one of the residents said.
Another resident pointed out that a hospital
facility never stays individual. It branches out
to the surrounding buildings, which in this
case are all residential homes.
Many people complained about the sewerage
system, that is already a problem in the area.
‘’We are not against mental wellness, we
are concerned about what will happen to the
area,’’ Bruce explained.
Shop owners are still in shock. ‘’We just
wish they were more upfront with us. I mean
we have been around since 1977, we’ve
made it this far, how can they say we are
unsuccessful?’’ one of the owners said.
According to the objection organizers, there
was a small notice on the fence in front of
the centre. ‘’This is not sufficient notice,’’ they
complained.
According to the Memorandum in Support of
an Application for the Rezoning of Erf 623,
Brackendowns, “the property is developed
with a retail
shopping centre which is 80%
vacant. An application is made to convert an
existing unsuccessful shopping centre to a
modern, well equipped hospital and health
care facility, representing an opportunity to
entrench rights to allow job opportunities and
provide health care facilities on the site.”
According to the application, it is envisaged
that the development will be compatible with
the surrounding environment and will be
a landmark. A development of this nature
is seen as means to accommodate a new
lifestyle in a growing and dynamic society by
providing for a much needed new trend.
The applicant’s motivation includes changing
the existing model one sees in South African
health-care to assist the national government;
the scholarships and training that The Life
Healthcare Group already provides; as well
as 60 potential job opportunities.
Up until the time of going to print, Mr Theron
could not be reached for comment.
Residents have until Friday to submit their completed objection forms. For more information contact Bruce on 083 452 5782.

If successfully implemented, the Ekurhuleni Metro’s initiative could create as many as 230 000 new jobs in the years 2015 to 2035.Gautrain Management Agency (GMA)
CEO Jack van der Merwe addressed
guests at the Ekurhuleni Captains
of Industry Forum (ECoIF) meeting last
Tuesday morning on the benefits of
the Metro’s strategic decision to make
the area surrounding the OR Tambo
International airport in Ekurhuleni
a productive and successful hub of
tourism and other commercial interests.
Van der Merwe explained the
aerotropolis initiative was not a project,
rather a process. “Development happens
naturally around an airport but if the proper
planning and implementation is done, it can
have significant benefits for local industry.”
He explained the airport connected to over
94 destinations globally, giving the areas in
its precinct great reach and potential. “Local
businesses need to team together to show
South Africa as a compelling place to live, to
invest, build a business and thrive,” he said.
He said that at the moment the airport was
a ‘transfer point’ with people arriving at the
airport moving on to other destinations.
However, local authorities wanted to make
it a destination point, enhancing business,
entertainment, education and health
facilities to attract guests to the area.
He said the Metro had already drafted a
five-year plan for the aerotropolis initiative
and were currently working on a 25-year
plan, to be finalised by the middle of next
year.
He said ground preparation had already
begun, involving transport improvement,
identifying land for development, and the
improvement of water, power and sanitation
facilities. He said the five-year plan would
provide significant value to the current
economy of Ekurhuleni and has encouraged
all local businesses to get involved.
ECoIF CEO Chris van Biljon explained the
forum and the Ekurhuleni Business Initiative,
recognized by local government, exists for
the purpose of mobilising businesses to
work in unity towards the improvement of
the community. He said constructive action
from businesses was required to make the
council’s vision for hundreds of thousands of
jobs to be created through the aerotropolis
initiative.
“If you don’t have businesses acting
constructively, nothing will get done,” he
said.

Germiston Rotary Anns would like to thank everyone who came to see the wonderful gardens last weekend. We are sure you would all agree that each one, although completely different to all the others, was a pleasure to walk through and admire. The weather was just perfect. Our biggest thank you must go to our wonderful gardeners, who opened their gardens up for us all to see. They were a source of inspiration, education and admiration. Rotary Anns would also like to thank the sponsors for their generous contributions. We would not have been able to organize this event without the support of the Germiston Garden Club. Their help and advice has been immeasurable, for which we say a very big thank you. If you are interested in finding out more about the Garden Club, contact Neville Kew on 082 376 9728.
Glorious Gardens of Germiston
Vandag wil ek vir jou vra of jy so iemand het?
Heigent hert julle, die nostalgie pak my hierdie week! By die venster sit my goeie vriendin Lalla. Stop by ‘n stopstraat, hier staan ‘n hond so hoog soos ‘n ponie en kyk vir Lalla in die gesig.

Friday 7 November still held a treat in store for residents in the Kristal Crescent enclosure who took part in another well attended Trick-or-Treat Walkabout for the children in their neighbourhood. This year saw almost 30 houses with nearly 80 children all dressed up to the nines, going from house to house to fill their goodie bags with sugar-filled delicacies, being guided by a printed map depicting only the participating houses.Residents pulled out all the stops to make their houses the creepiest on the block, while the kids thoroughly enjoyed all the scary fun to be had!

Gauteng MEC for Finance, Ms Barbara Creecy, and MEC for Roads and Transport, Ismail Vadi, announced on 10 November that the upgrade of Cedar Road in the City of Johannesburg with an estimated value in excess of R50 million is the pilot project for the new “open tender process” of the provincial government. To restore public confidence in the provincial government’s tender processes, Gauteng Treasury, together with the Department of Roads and Transport, is piloting new steps to improve transparency of the process and compliance with supply chain management provisions of the Public Finance Management Act. Central to this is the decision to open the Bid Adjudication Committee process to public observation as well as to publish the outcomes of each stage in the tendering process on the provincial Treasury website.“We want to re-establish public confidence in the tender process,“ said MEC Creecy, “and we believe that the best way to do this is to make the process more open to public scrutiny so that bidders are convinced that the award process is fair and transparent.”“The public should have confidence that Treasury regulations protecting the procurement of goods and services are being adhered to by government officials,” added Creecy. MEC Vadi confirmed that the Department of Roads and Transport will participate fully in the pilot project and that it has identified the long awaited upgrading of Cedar Road to test the practical application of the new tender
procedures. “We are particularly pleased that our department has been selected for this pilot study as on average we process over 100 tender awards annually,” he said. This means that in future the public will be able to witness the decision-making process around the awarding of tenders. In addition, after the close of the advertising process, tender boxes will be opened publically and all documents will be imprinted to prevent unauthorised switching of documents later in the process.“Essentially, what we are doing is to ensure that the ground rules are established before the start of the process and that these
conditions are not changed during the process itself. The probity team appointed by Treasury will ensure that the bid evaluation committee sticks to these ground rules,” Creecy explained.Treasury will in future also take greater interest in the implementation of contracts by ensuring that there is closer monitoring and evaluation of performance by contractors. Departments will have to inform Treasury of any contractor who is not performing in line with expectations and Treasury will in turn warn other Departments in the province about the poor performance of this contractor. Once the pilot project is completed the lessons learned will be included in a Revised Open Tender Policy that will be taken to the Gauteng Executive Council for adoption across the provincial government.
Open tender process launched in Gauteng
• Ensuring that there is detailed work to establish the conditions of contracts and proper estimates of costs and time prior to advertising so that the evaluation criteria are appropriate and do not need to be changed during the evaluation itself;• Allowing Provincial Treasury to observe the in-house departmental tender processes to ensure greater compliance with supply chain management procedures;• Appointing an independent probity team to audit all tenders with a contract value of more than R50 million; and• Publishing the outcome of each stage of the tender process on the Treasury website.
Gauteng Treasury has introduced additional measures to enhance the transparency of the existing
tendering process such as:
Power utility City Power made a major breakthrough in the fight against cable theft last Friday when it arrested four suspects who confessed to be the masterminds behind the theft of the electricity cable in Eikenhof that led to widespread water outages in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Ekurhuleni and the West Rand two months ago.The water shortage occurred as a result of the theft of electricity cables needed for the reservoirs to pump water. The suspects were arrested by City Power Investigative Unit with 120 kilograms worth of copper valued at R8 435. The apprehension of the suspects follows a tip-off from the scrap dealer who alerted City Power to the suspicious goods that the suspects were selling.Upon being questioned, the suspects confessed that they were behind the theft of the electricity cable in Eikenhof that resulted in widespread water outages in September. They conceded that they are part of a syndicate that is actively involved in the theft of electricity cables and copper and took City Power investigators to cable theft hot spots that they have targeted. The suspects also showed the investigators the site where they strip the cables and also identified and fingered City Power contactor employees who provide them with information on vulnerable areas and equipment they should target. The employees identified by the suspects were also arrested, bringing the total to eight people who have been locked behind bars at the Booysens Police Station. The suspects including their accomplices will appear in court soon on charges of theft, damage to property. The South African Police Services and
City Power are on a manhunt for other members of the syndicate who are at large.Managing Director of City Power Sicelo Xulu welcomed the arrest and said this major bust is indicative of how a partnership between communities, City Power, law enforcement agencies such as the South African Police Services (SAPS), the Hawks and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) can yield positive results in the fight against cable theft.“The water cuts that affected communities in Pretoria and Johannesburg due to cable theft are a grim and chilling reminder of how the scourge of cable theft can impact negatively on communities and businesses if it remains unchecked. We appeal to our communities to work with us to rid ourselves of the menace of cable theft as it poses a national security threat and robs us of much needed jobs,” said Xulu. Cable theft causes the economy to haemorrhage over R5 billion annually. “This lost revenue is money that could be invested to grow the economy and generate employment opportunities. Small and medium sized businesses are the hardest hit by unplanned power outages and in many instances many of them have to shed jobs in order to survive the negative impact of lost revenue sustained during unplanned outages by criminally induced actions,” said Xulu. He said the Association of Electricity Municipalities of Southern Africa (AMEU), the industry body in which he was elected President, is lobbying g o v e r n m e n t to have cable theft classified as economic sabotage.

Owing to the rapidly increasing population of Gauteng, if strategic intervention is not taken to improve the existing transport system over the coming 23 years, by 2037 the average speed of a motor vehicle on Gauteng’s roads could dwindle to just 12km/h.Jack van der Merwe, CEO of Gautrain Management Agency (GMA), presented these staggering statistics at the recent Ekurhuleni Captains of Industry Forum. He said planning was essential to accommodate the growing population of Gauteng, which by 2037 was expected to increase to 18,7 million from a population of 11,2 million in 2010. He said the number of
residents in the province was growing by as much as 700 people every day.He said if Gauteng were to remain a powerhouse in the country, three shifts would be necessary in the transport system: from motorised to non-motorised, private to public and road to rail transport. He said government had developed a five-year plan to address this expected phenomenal growth and was fine-tuning a 25-year plan. New rail systems and bus routes are also on the cards for the Gauteng area. “If we don’t take this seriously, calculations have shown the road could become so congested the average motor vehicle speed will be 12km/h,” he said, “You might have a BMW but you will go slower than a horse-drawn carriage”.

Caring for a terminally
ill ChildHopes, dreams, growing up to become fully
functional adults, a lifetime filled with happiness - these are the wishes any parent has for his or her
child. So finding out your child is terminally ill, is life-shattering.Having a child with a life-shortening illness is overwhelming and emotionally draining. The impact on the family as a whole is enormous. It affects the family’s daily routine and maintaining a “normal” family life will become increasingly difficult, not to mention the financial impact the treatment might have. The reality is that no one can take away your pain and grief but trying to handle the situation the best you can is the most important thing you can do as a parent.
tips for parents with a terminally ill childManage the child’s symptoms in a comfortable setting. Thus, keep them as comfortable as possible.
Gather information from your health team on how your child’s needs may change so that you know what to expect.
Maintain a high quality of life as far as the illness will allow.
Encourage your child to continue to set goals for himself since it gives him meaning and a sense of achievement.
Where possible, allow him privacy and independence.
Allow your child to discuss his fears and questions.
If you have more than one child, inform them about the illness and let them help take care of their sick sibling.
Spend time with all your children and do not always focus on the illness.
As difficult as it might be, practise normal parenting. Without limits, your child may feel out of control.
Stand together as a family and seek support for all involved.
Be honest about your own fears and pain.
Have those difficult conversations about death and dying. It could be of some comfort knowing you gave your child the send-off they wanted.
Having a child with a life-shortening
