Make 2012 the Greatest Year Ever!It is days into the new year. If you created a new year’s resolution, have

you been sticking to it? If yes, fantastic! But do you worry how long it

will last? Or maybe you’re like me, I didn’t create one because I didn’t

know where to start. Well here’s to a new ritual! Give it a try! By Editor in Chief Nescelle Caberto

I got this in my e-mail from a really good friend. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. For the past ten years, I’ve had a simple New Year’s ritual that’s been a way to ring in the new. As the saying goes, “Well begun is half done”, so I suggest you do this ASAP to get 2012 off to a wonderful start:

Start with a 10-15 minute meditation in which you set your attention on releasing the old and opening to the new.

1. On a piece of paper, hand write a list of all the things in 2011 that you’d like to let go of.

This can include old patterns that don’t serve you, grudges or resentments you’re hanging on to, fears that hold you back, or circumstances that you’d like to change. It can also include not-useful habits such as eating too much sugar or not exercising. Make sure your list is as complete

as possible with everything that didn’t work for you in 2011. My list is usually a few pages. 2. (This part is fun.) If it’s easy for you to burn the list, then do it. If not, you can tear the

list up in many pieces. As you release this list, imagine letting go of the energies that are represented on your list.

3. Now, on to creation. Make a list of all that you wish to create for yourself in 2012. Include the habits you’d like to embrace, the external circumstances you’d like to create, and the internal experiences you’d like to have (joy, freedom, ease, love, peace, acceptance of all

that is, etc). Be as specific as possible. (continued pg 2)

4. Read the list aloud (whether you’re alone or with others). Speaking it out adds more energy to it. Feel each item as though it’s actually happened. And Lastly... 5. Put the list in a special place, as a symbolic offering for your coming year.

Notice how you feel after doing this ritual. I always feel cleansed, lighter, renewed, and excited about what’s ahead.

The FAGKC meeting, last January 6th, was preceded by

our usual potluck ,“nourishing stomach development” & a joyful laughter yoga activity. What healthy & fun way to start the evening for our first 2012 FA-GKC meeting!

Much thanks to Becky Holsen, a certified yoga instructor who was introduced to laughter yoga by the well-known Dr. Madan Kataria, a physician from Mumbai, India. According

to Dr. Kataria, laughter yoga hopes to bring good health, joy, & world peace through laughter. Unconditional laughter

(laughing for no reason), when combined with yogic breathing (pranayama), can bring physiological & psychological benefits to a person, according to her. The concept of laughter yoga is based on the scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate

between a fake and real laughter. Officers & members present were energized by the activity.

It was a joy to interact & watch everyone’s reaction as we

engaged in the “fake & real laughter” activity across the room. Members found it difficult to stop laughing when the meeting was ready to start. There was more focus & energy once the

meeting commenced.We hope to carry the power of laughter in our hearts

wherever & whatever situations we are, for “laughter is the best medicine.” So, ho-ho, ha-ha-ha, ho-ho, ha-ha-ha. Carry it on.

Thanks to FAGKC President, Beth Rosas for incorporating laughter yoga, an outreach program for our membership. May God bless you, Beth & your team.

Philippine Medical Society Announces Annual Medical Ball, March 17 2012

A green tie gala benefit, celebrating 37 years of reaching out and raising hope.

Greater Kansas City (PMSGKC) will host its annual Medical Ball from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m., Saturday, March 17, at the

InterContinental Kansas City at the Plaza. “Our annual gala brings members, non-members, volunteers and friends

together for a night filled with camaraderie & fund while supporting a wonderful cause,” said Dr. Olivia Iway, PMSGKC President. “I hope everyone

will attend & make this the best event ever.”

PMSGKC will celebrate 37 years of

“Reaching out & Raising Hope,” both within the local community & abroad. All proceeds will benefit the Medical Mission,

PMSGK’s, annual mission in the Philippines, providing healthcare services

& medical aid to the underserved, including establishing free local health clinics & providing AED & BLS training.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in

their formal best with a “hint of green”. Enjoy an elegant evening of cocktails, gourmet cuisine & dancing with live

entertainment by Kansas City’s Saucy Jack Band & performances by the Paco Dance Academy.

I have witnessed many leaders who have toiled and

served this organization with its purpose in mind- “to promote and preserve the Filipino cultural heritage and further better relationships and understanding among the people of Greater Kansas City.” I am most proud of FA-GKC’s solidarity, that regardless of our regional backgrounds, we are one Filipino association working together towards a common goal.

As I look back to its history and all the great work of all past FA-GKC leaders and officers of this organization, I admire their sacrifices and commitment, their generosity of their time, energy and resources, especially those who continue to do so throughout the years. I do share their passion in preserving our culture and traditions and reaching out to the community. I have witnessed many members with their families who continually volunteer and work for our association regardless of any position held. All of your hard work is recognized and appreciated.

As the 44th President of the Association, my goal is to continue the vision of our past leaders and develop programs that will involve all generations of our Fil-Am community. My presidential theme - “Embrace Traditions, Bridge Generations and Reach Out to Communities” will hopefully help all of us,

elected officers to stay focus to the tasks at hand and to serve our organization achieve its mission and purposes for which this corporation was formed as set forth in our Articles of Incorporation.

Moreover, I would like to reach out to all Filipino-Americans of Greater Kansas City to join us and

support our association. We must all work together in encouraging our younger generation continue our traditions, share with them our values and beliefs and be proud of our Filipino heritage. Together, we will celebrate our successes and overcome many challenges as a community. We can all have greater impact in our community and what better way to achieve this by attending our events at the Filipino Cultural Center. I invite you to come and see our newly renovated FCC and visit our cultural exhibit room.

To our younger members, I pose this challenge to you. Our immediate Past President, Mike Hicks has stepped up to prove that you too, can make a difference. The 2011 September Affair’s theme, “Rise to the Challenge” resonated this loud and clear. And to all our past and present dancers with our Sinag-Tala Dance troupe for the past 40 years, and to all performers with our Sampaguita Choir, you all must be commended for all your time and sharing your skills and talents to the community. You all have served well as the Cultural arms of our association.

Thank you to all elected and appointed officers for making this commitment to serve our association. I look

forward to working with you all. To all members, I thank you for the trust and confidence you have given me and I hope for all your support in making our association visible, viable and a vital part of the community in the Greater Kansas City in the year 2012 and beyond.

2012 Medical Mission to Labo, Camarines Norteby Ron HoltPresident, South Platte Rotary Club2009-2011

On January 23, 2012, Philippine

Medical Society of Greater Kansas City (PMSGKC) and the South Platte Rotary Club (SPRC) with support from Rotary International and the Philippine Nurses Association of Greater Kansas City (PNAGKC) will be conducting its 19th annual medical mission in another poor community in the Philippines, this time the town of Labo, Camarines Norte Province, about 8 hours by road from Manila. This mission will be conducted by a team of 36 U.S. residents, consisting of 24 medical professionals and 12 other staff who will assist with supplies and patient processing. Like the 2011 mission, this mission will enjoy the support of a local Rotary club, the Rotary Club of Labo, and local medical professionals. Once again, it is expected that many poor people, likely more than 2000, will be served with medical and surgical care and that there will be healthcare in-service training for local medical professionals and student nurses. Over 575 boxes of medical supplies and various items of medical equipments were shipped by the SPRC on

December 2-3, 2011, so the mission will leave the Labo District Hospital better equipped to continue service after the one-week mission is over.

Over the past 18 medical missions, members of the Philippine Medical Society of Greater Kansas and the Philippine Nurses Association Of Greater Kansas City, together with the medical mission sponsor, SPRC have provided medical care for over 32,000 poor individuals, including 3800 major surgeries and 4800 minor surgeries, and has delivered several tons of donated medical supplies and equipment worth millions of dollars. Further information on these past medical missions is available at the PMSGKC’s website : www.medical-mission.org These medical missions were coordinated by Dr. Balty Lotuaco, Denys Collins and Dr. Lillian Pardo, current Medical Director of the 2012 medical mission.

The SPRC and its partners have pursued these missions, because over 25% of the people throughout the Philippines live below the poverty line (the poverty percentage is around 66% in Labo, the site of our upcoming mission) and cannot obtain adequate medical care, and we are in a position to help extend care at no charge to some of them and to leave their local hospitals better equipped to continue

to provide care after we leave. As Mother Teresa once said, work like this represents ‘God’s love in the world today’ and the 2012 mission team and the SPRC and its partners are privileged to be part of this expression of God’s love. All of the mission team members know that this experience will be as rewarding for them as it is helpful to the poor in Labo. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, ‘One of the greatest compensations in life is that no person can help another without helping themselves”.

The Creation of Filipino American Basketball of Kansas City by Vic Rosqueta

A group of Filipino American ballers from the surrounding Kansas City area who participates in weekly pick-up games at the Tomahawk Community Center are now called the Filipino American Basketball Association of Kansas City, a.k.a. FABA KC. FABA KC aims to unite Fil-Am community through sports, promote camaraderie and sportsmanship adhering to Filipino values and traditions. FABA members elected Victor Rosqueta as President, Chris Francia as the Vice President, Alan  Basa as the Secretary and Chris Javillonar as Treasurer.

We started with six teams and now exponentially grew to twenty one teams including four women volleyball teams.

Winter league kicks off on January 21, 2012 at 11:30 am at 68 Inside Sports, 11301 West 88 St., Overland Park, Kansas. It is participated by two Batang Pinoy teams, twelve years old and under, two Lahing Pinoy teams, seventeen years old and under. Open Division teams are participated by: Astig, Bagwis, Basa, Buhawi, Dabarkads, Henyo Kings, Iskul Bukol, Kanto Boys, Suave, Tamaraw and Takusa. forty years old and above: Bagets, Godfather, Legends of the North and Tatang Agers. Volleyball teams: Bosing, Da Angels, Istariray and Malditas. Our summer league will be played at 68 Inside Sports on August , September and October. (continued...)

Gigi is not new to the Filipino

community. The Founder and 2-term

President of PNAGKC ( 1991-1994),

found herself busy again when the

Senior Council recruited her in 2010

and became President Elect in 2011.

Gigi has a full plate of activities, both

professionally and personally. She and

husband, Jason, are owners of 2

companies; Essential Home Health,

Inc. and Integral Care Provider, Inc.

She is a Member of the Community

Advisory Directors of Research

Foundation, member of the UMKC

School of Nursing Community

Advisory Council, Committee Member

on Strategic Healthcare Policy at WIPP

( Woman Impacting Public Policy).

Spiritually speaking, Gigi also

volunteers as an EOM( Extra Ordinary

Minister) and as a Minister of the Sick

and Homebound at St. Michaels The

Archangel Parish.

Gigi is very enthusiastic with her

role at the Senior Council of FA-GKC.

She enjoys the group tremendously

and that is evident with all the

activities and events she already put

into plan for this year. ( See SENIOR

COUNCIL ACTIVITIES). She is

encouraging all members who are 55

years of age and older as well as

supporters (below 55), to join the fun

and vibrant Senior Council and she

promises they will have the “time of

their life”. Indeed, Gigi is having her

time of her life with The Senior

Council. Her favorite life quote,

“There are many things in life

that will catch your eye, but only

a few will catch your heart . . . pursue those.”- Unknown.

  -­‐    In  comparing  this  month-­‐end  balance  with  the  current  year’s  beginning  Cash  balance  of  $101,477,  we  have  a  year-­‐to-­‐date     net  cash  out  flow  of  ($38,072).   -­‐    Including  Investments  of  $19,363,  Total  Funds  through  December  are  $82,768.
