PICK ‘N PULLAfter coming up with a general direction, I went to a Pick ‘n Pull in Columbus, Ohio to search for some material options and ideas.

True, the Pick ‘n Pull isn’t the first place you’d think for furniture materials, but that’s exactly why I liked the idea.

THE MATERIAL OF CHOICEAfter a while of walking around the Pick ‘n Pull, I saw it. The perfect material... Radiator supports.

Radiator supports are 5/8” steel rods that support the frame around the radiator, which is located right behind the grille of the car. The type that I used were found in older cars. This one in particular, a 1994 Buick Roadmaster.

I decided to get the frame for my chair powder coated.. First of all, because the paint was in rough shape and I had sanded most of it away, and more importantly, so it didn’t rust any further.

After the frame was finished and all of the welds were filed down, I took my chair frame to Leonard’s Powder Coating, located in Cincinnati, where it was powder coated in a glossy warm gray.

BUILDING VALUEBuilding Value is an Architectural Salvage yard in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was a really amazing place to go... they had so many old furnishings, old doors, cabinets, and unique details for you home that have been donated from homes all around Cincinnati.

This is the location I decided to get my lumber from for the seat and the back of my chair.

The lumber located on the property was kept outside. Some had been used, some had not. All of it was weathered, dry, worn, and most contained nails. I had my work cut out for me.

Since the lumber was dried, cracked, and also very thick, bending it was not an option.

So instead, I shaped the wood. I sanded each side and then glued and clamp the pieces together. The picture above is after cleaning off... it was obviously messy!

FRONTGATEThe Frontgate name is known for unsurpassed quality and the high-end value of their products. Since 1991, Frontgate has been known for exceeding expectations and outfitting America’s finest homes.

OVERSIZED VANITY MIRRORThe idea behind the Oversized Vanity Mirror was to have a dramatically sized vanity mirror with a different shaped frame.

Various shapes and proportions were explored before arriving on the final oval-shaped mirror.

The final concepts and technical drawings were done in Adobe Illustrator with dimensions, call-outs, and specifications for the vendor.

TOZZO FIRE PITThe Tozzo Fire Pit was actually the project that I was assigned on my very first day at Frontgate. I was lucky enough to work on it through the entire design process... And oddly enough, I finished the final revisions on my last day at Frontgate.

One of Frontgate’s best selling and most well-known products is their round Copper Fire Pit. The Tozzo Fire Pit was meant to be a revised, modern, and more artful version of their existing fire pit.

The concepts for the Tozzo Fire Pit were sketched, rendered in Photoshop and Illustrator. Technical drawings, dimensions, and specifications were sent to the vendor, followed by samples and final revisions.

FIRE PIT Translated from Italian, Tozzo means “squarely built”. Over time, weathering will gradually darken the copper bowl.

The copper bowl rests squarely on an aluminum base. Leveler feet provide constant steadiness on uneven paver stones or bricks. A sturdy iron grate maintains a well-ventilated fire and the drain hole inhibits standing rainwater.

AMHERST MONOGRAMMED DOOR MATLet me be the first to tell you... Scrollwork is not easy. I had no idea. I worked on various door mats during my time at Frontgate and was able to continue working on them when I went back to school through Freelance work.

All concepts were very loosely sketched by hand and immediately developed in Adobe Illustrator, followed by technical drawings and specifications that were sent to the vendor.

AMHERST MONOGRAMMED DOOR MATNatural coir bristles capture dirt and moisture at the door while the scrollwork adds a dimension at the front entryway.

The door mat is available in two sizes and can be monogrammed as shown. A black rubber base provides traction and is perfect for outdoor use.

POOL FLOATSIf you think all pool floats are the same like I did - you’ve never seen Frontgate’s. They’re amazing... and they’re pricey for a reason.

I was able to design new screen printed floats (shown to the left). Frontgate wanted to keep the Bronze Palm printed float and I designed the Fish, Flamingo, and Turtle to follow suit.

POOL FLOATSFrontgate’s Pool Floats are made with a full 2-1/2” of the latest in marine-quality, triple-dipped PVC vinyl closed-cell foam technology. The flexible foam won’t become brittle and they resist punctures. Tested to support at least 35O lbs.

This line of new screen-printed pool floats includes new colors and graphics. The Bronze Palm was the initial design language that Frontgate was looking for. I designed the Flamingo, Turtles, and the Fish Trio to follow.

PROCESSDuring the sketching and development process of this light fixture, I wanted to focus on the concept of a natural, layered look. After sketching, I felt that sketch models may be more effective in finding a solution, which they were.

Sketch models were done paper and tracing paper to explore shape, flexibility, and movement.

ULITA LIGHTINGEach side of the Ulita light is completely different. The individual panels are adjustable to allow as much light as desired.

The polypropylene panels were laser-cut and laminated with tracing paper to give a softer, luminescent look.

SKETCH & DEVELOPMENTDuring the sketch and development phase of designing this hand mixer, it was important to keep in mind versatility and compactness.

It was also equally important to reduce wrist strain. There needed to be a new feature that enabled users to have a different angle while mixing for more comfortable experience.

I liked the some of the current white hand mixers on the market, but they lacked that certain... spark. They needed a little fun to them. In order to create that sense of fun and uniqueness, I focused on the use of white housing, stainless steel, and bright accents.

FEATURESThere was a lot of wrist strain with the existing hand mixers on the market, so it was important to create features that reduce or eliminate that wrist strain. The Fisk mixer adjusts to 3 different orientations, as pictured above. The vertical position gives more control and the 45 degree angle creates a more natural angle.

The silver button on the side is a push-release button that locks the beater into the 3 different positions.

FISK MIXERThe final prototype is powder printed, sanded, and painted. There are vents located on the back and inside the handle.

The battery powered stand holds the mixer and beater for a compact storage option, both in a cabinet or on the counter top.
