The new 2003 Valve Block will be integrated to the“central air and water” snowmaking distributionsystem (the valve operates at water pressures from:0 to 60 bar). The valve assembly includes all sensorsand measurement devices.Because of the integrated design of the new ValveBlock, it will be possible to install it as a single com-pact air/water unit, complete with all adjustmentdevices. This integrated design also improves thespeed of installation.

SAALBACH-HINTERGLEMM WITH A BIGGER-THAN

The Bergbahnen Saalbach-Hinterglemm boast three cable-car and ski-lift companies in the

Saalbach-Hinterglemm tourist region. In winter, these companies manage 43 ski-lift facilities

that cover 150 km of ski runs covered with man made snow.

Following the direct connection with Leogang, the Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang skiing carousel was created: 200 km of perfect ski runs (90 kmeasy, 95 km intermediate and 15 km difficult) together with 55 cable-cars and/or ski-lift facilities, all accessible with a single ski pass.Bergbahnen Saalbach-Hinterglemm guarantee the correct operation ofthe installations and preparation of the ski runs, as well as an informativeservice for tourists, ski run monitoring against avalanche risk, first-aid rescueservice, etc.

Page 7: TA_Magazine_2003-2_english

Snow experts has interviewed Eng. Walter Steiner, Saalbacher BergbahnenGesmbH manager, about state-of-the-art snowmaking techniques.

snow experts: Here in Saalbach, when do you begin to cover theruns with man made snow?Eng. Walter Steiner: As soon as possible. We begin to make snow as soonas the temperature conditions are ideal, towards mid-November.

snow experts: Do any runs have priority?Eng. Walter Steiner: The Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang carousel is famousbecause the entire ski area can be skied in both clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. It is for this reason that the main ski runs connectingthe carousel have top priority.

“The functionality of a snowmakinginstallation at marginal temperaturesis very important, not to say essential.”

snow experts: What is the role of installation functionalityat marginal temperatures?Eng. Walter Steiner: The functionality of a snowmaking installationat marginal temperatures is very important, not to say essential, because in our ski area snowmaking is necessary for many hoursat these “so-called” marginal temperatures.

snow experts: According to you, is it necessary to equip asnowmaking installation with fixed and mobile snowgenerators, fan guns and lances?Eng. Walter Steiner: A snowmaking installation generally com-prises all these elements. In the future, however, fixed snowgenerators will become more and more important, as it is verytime consuming to handle several mobile fan guns.

snow experts: According to you, what is the advantageof fully automatic snowmaking systems?Eng. Walter Steiner: A tangible advantage is that installationtime is reduced to a minimum. When the right temperature isreached, the pumping station and the generators start operationimmediately, thus saving a lot of time.

snow experts: What are your targets for the next few years?Eng. Walter Steiner: There is a growing demand for completesnow coverage in the shortest time possible, that is within fewdays. This operation requires maximum pump performance, which means signif icant investment in terms of powerfulpumping stations, energy sources and water resources. Moreover, it is essential to have a sufficient number of snowgenerators. In the Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang ski area thereare approx. 150 fan guns and 110 lances. In winter 2003/2004the installation will be implemented with 50 new snow generators.

Thanks for the interview.

HOSE MAINTENANCE TIPSStoringin a dry, fresh and well ventilated place /hoses must be clean / roll up the hoses /avoid contact with concrete / antifreeze /protect from heat and direct sun rays

Cleaningrinse the hoses inside before storing / neverdry clean / check and clean the couplings

Dryingdo not dry in the sun or other sources ofheat / ensure good aeration / roll up thehoses only when they are completely dry(risk of fungi)

We have been producing hoses for snowmaking since the late 70’s. Our experienceand activity date back to 1886.

GROWAGOur company is in Grosswangen, nearLucerne, in the heart of Switzerland andEurope. This strategic position enables us tomove quickly in the market. We specialisein the snowmaking sector but we also opera-te in the fire and accident prevention andindustrial sectors. With our 25 collaboratorsand approximately 4000 products, we canboast a yearly turnover 6 million Euro.

COLLABORATION WITH TECHNOALPINAt the end of the 80’s, we began an intensecollaboration with TechnoAlpin, which hasgreatly increased during the last year.TechnoAlpin is the sole distributor, with theexception of Switzerland and Scandinavia,of our “Final” snow hoses. This exclusive syner-

gy enables both companies to efficientlyexploit each other’s technical know-how.

"FINAL” HIGH PRESSURE HOSES: THEMERCEDES OF HOSESFinal high-pressure hoses have been constant-ly improved over the years, and they haveproved to be the ideal hoses for snowmakinginstallations. The great reliability and safetyof this product have already convinced manycustomers. Our Final hoses ensure a pressureof 60 bar with 1 1/2 to 2 inch diameter, 40bar with 2 1/2 inches and 30 bar with 3 inches. It is for this reason that the “Final” hose isconsidered the Mercedes of hoses.Furthermore, we have also improved the mater-ials and developed new solutions with regardto valves and couplings over the years. TheKamlok system, for instance, has also beenadopted by the US market. The first couplingswere made of bronze, while today they aremade of stainless steel. To connect the couplings

to the hose we utilise wire binding. Today wealso use red-head injection. The red-headjoints are pressed from the inside through anexpansion ring. Anodised aluminium jointsguarantee safe use with minimum weight.

EXTRA NEW RED-HEAD FILTER

To wash particularly dirty waters, an extrafilter is fitted between the pipes to stopall particles with a diameter larger than250 microns (The loss of pressure isminimum, i.e. between 0.6 and 0.7 bar).

EXTERNAL TURBINE MOTOR AND BETTER ENERGY PROCUREMENTSYSTEMTechnoAlpin’s turbine motor is positioned outside the barrel. This arrangement has significantly improved the system’s effi-ciency and enhanced throw which for the M20 is more than50 metres. All TechnoAlpin snow generators are energy savingmachines. Tests have proven that they are up to 30% moreefficient than our competitors fan guns. The M15’s extremely

efficient barrel design has a “single” 11 kWturbine, which has the same snow output asa 15 kW conventional turbine. The M10 has aturbine that uses less than 9 kW and reachesthe same efficiency as an 11.5 kW conventio-nal turbine. Finally, the M18 has a 15 kW tur-bine that reaches the same efficiency as an18 kW turbine.

MAXIMUM PRECISION OF WEATHER DATADue to TechnoAlpin’s specially designed wea-ther station and its location on the fan gun andthe lance, enables us to collect weather datawith great precision and record the data inthe snow gun data base for use in the controlalgorithms.

OIL-FREE COMPRESSOR: ECOLOGICALCORRECT AND MAINTENANCE FREEOil-free compressor: Regard for the environ-ment and greater efficiency. The light structure(aluminium) and it’s integrated system aresome of the advantages of this 4 kW compres-sor, which is standard on all fan guns and auto-matic snow lances.

INNOVATIVE ELECTRONICS (SNOW QUALITY)The snow generator’s micro processor (PLC)combines maximum precision and excellentfunctionality to ensure the best possible snowquality in all climatic conditions. This micropro-cessor is integrated in all TechnoAlpin products.

MODULAR SYSTEMA complete assortment also requires a

uniform structural concept and vast series

of components that guarantee the follo-

wing advantages:

1. Flexibility and compatibility

carriages with wheels, universal tower (2

m) and arm (6 and 10 m), which are able

to support all TechnoAlpin fan guns. The

position of each snow generator can be

adjusted by loosening and then tightening

six screws.

2. Investment

installing a snowmaking system requires

significant investment in terms of time and

money. Thanks to our modular system

approach (from the well to the snow ge-

nerator) we are able to guarantee safe

guard your investments, even in case of

changes of environment conditions or

future expansions of the installation.

3. Long-standing guarantee

component standardisation ensures long-

term supply of spare parts, as well as

maximum flexibility in the replacement of

snow generator components. It also

reduces the spare part inventory carried

by our factory.

The modular design of the control system inthe snow generator enables us to easilytrouble shoot and quickly replace a singlecomponent in the case of malfunctioning.

TechnoAlpin snow generators are known fortheir perfect snow quality which is obtainedthrough the multiple levels of regulation.

ALPINAL® system advantages

The ALPINAL® system, which is made up of cast iron pipes and unions connected

with couplings, can be assembled by trained personnel and ensures long life

service. The spacing tubes further accelerate installation time since welding is no

longer required.

ALPINAL® pipes are galvanised to guarantee long life. After laying the pipes, it is

possible to cover them re-using the excavated soil.

The internal pressure of 100 bar, the external pressure, ground sinking and

movements do not jeopardise the stability of ALPINAL® pipes. Stability is provided

by the NOVO-SIT and TIS-K couplings, which guarantee maximum adhesion in

time. ALPINAL® piping systems do not require other protection with concrete

counter bearings.

The socket joints are absolutely watertight thanks to the TYTON profiled gaskets

that ensure pipe tightness up to burst pressure (at DN 100 not less than 400 bar).

Using SAINT-GOBAIN GUSSROHR piping means leaving nothing to chance, thus

avoiding consequent mistakes. The first step is the field evaluation, followed by

the planning phase and quantification of the material and personnel required.

Assembly technique

The connectors used in the points of change of

direction or barrage armatures cause thrusts that

are absorbed by the NOVO-SIT or TIS-K couplings.

In each coupling, these pipes form an angle of

max. 3°, so that in large piping systems, arcs will

never have a radius greater than 115 m.

Pipe assembly can be carried out using an

excavator or assembly equipment that can also be

used in the connecting points. In very narrow

places, where a gripper-ditcher must be used,

ALPINAL® pipes with intermodular sheathing can

be hooked to the cutter in the form of coil and

then laid in the ditch.
