Apprenticeship Planning Guidance
WE TEACH CHILDREN, NOT CURRICULUM!
This apprenticeship requires significant preparation and planning in order to be deliveredmost effectively. Please read below. The checklist below outlines the early logisticalarrangements that will need to be addressed prior to the start of the apprenticeship.
Lesson 3 High school students
Action step: Identify and secure high school students as clients.Through Citizen Schools 8th Grade Academy, local high schools or apprentices older
siblings, secure several high school students to attend the 3rd lesson and the WOW! Invitethem to attend any other sessions, especially the college visits.
Lesson 4 College visit
Action step: Arrange for a college visit.This apprenticeship only carries weight when students get to actually see a college. It is
suggested that the CT/TL make arrangements with a student group, admissions office, and/orfinancial aid counselor so that apprentices will have the chance to formally interact with
people from the college.
Lesson 5 Meet with banker
Action step: Secure a meeting with a banker or financial advisor.This can be done by contacting local banks, neighborhood branches, or financial institutions.
Many already share a relationship or interest in Citizen Schools and are flexible enough tocommit to one session. They should also be encouraged to attend the WOW!
Lesson 6 College visit
Action step: Arrange a second college visit.When visiting their second campus, it is recommended that the CT/TL arrange a meeting with
an administrator or admissions counselor to discuss admissions and financial aid. Studentsshould also be more pro-active in interviewing students and making comparisons to the
previously visited college.
Lesson 7 Meet with advisor Action step: Secure a meeting with a guidance counselor or college advisor.
The objective for this session is to address the academic and financial preparation. It is recommended toschedule a session with the high school guidance counselor or with an advisor from a community
organization, such as TERI College Access.
Lesson 10 - WOW!
Action step: Confirm that the high school clients will attend. Action step: Secure panelists from finance and higher education.
It is essential that the clients (high school students) attend, as well as that a panelist of experts andprofessionals from the related field of finance and higher education are committed to coming to the WOW!

BE REAL: Your final product or performance should meet adult standards of quality, befunctional and authentic without denying the apprentices the chance to participate in the process.
ADD VALUE: Producing products or performances that are valuable to the community is at theheart of the Citizen Schools model.
BE PUBLIC: Apprentices generate authentic WOWs when they are capable of demonstratingand teaching others the skill they have learned in a public forum where they can be recognized, beheld accountable for their learning and show off the skills they have learned. Apprentices shouldbe celebrated for their work. Displaying work publicly is a transformative process and ensures thesuccess and quality of the work produced.
ALLOW KIDS TO TEACH BACK: True top of the triangle learning happens whenapprentices are given the opportunity to take on the role of master teacher and teach what theyhave learned to others. Giving apprentices a chance to do this guarantees that they will rememberwhat you have taught them.

Planning the Lesson
Set the Context and Review Agenda Time: 5 Minutes
Welcome students to the Talking About College Apprenticeship Introduce self and why youre excited to teach the apprenticeship
Review Agenda(Provide Apprentices with a visual agenda written on flipchart paper and taped upin the classroom.)
ACTIVITIES(Please factor a 5 minute break between Activities 2 and 3)
Time: 65 minutes
Activity 1: Roll the Dice Time: 15
Introduce the fun game and way for everyoneto get to know each other better.
Mention the importance of good publicspeaking and how it will play a role in theapprenticeship so it is a skill well all work on.This activity is a good start.
Take turns rolling the dice and match thenumber to the question. Make sure eachstudent introduces him/herself before theyanswer the question.
ObjectiveCreate a comfortable andrelaxed atmosphere for the
students, CT, and TL.
Learn something new about theapprentices, CT, and TL.
Activity 2: Setup Accounts Time: 15
Includes demonstration, guided practice, individual or group practice. Be sure and link toyour learning objectives.
Mention that in this apprenticeship, one importantlesson theyll learn is the importance of saving.
Divide the group into two teams. Suggestcollege mascots as ideas for names.
Explain that in this apprenticeship, in additionto value stars, behavior will be rewarded withmoney.
Each team will have an account and the moneyin the account can be used throughout theapprenticeship however each team chooses.
Positive behavior will be rewarded withdeposits (debits); negative or inappropriatebehavior will lead to penalty withdrawals(credits).
Ask the students what good/appropriatebehavior is for this apprenticeship. Whatbehavior is inappropriate?

Activity 3: Write-Around Time: 20
Includes demonstration, guided practice, individual or group practice. Be sure and link toyour learning objectives.
For this activity, the students will have a chance to
respond to the questions prepared on the flip-chartpaper. From their responses and with the CTs input,the class will develop the goals, objectives and planfor the apprenticeship.
When the music starts, students walk aroundthe room and respond to the questions. Thestudents should feel free to write anything thatcomes to mind. When the music stops, studentsshould help bring chart paper to front.
*This can also be done as a team activity with theincentive of a bonus for the team with the most
responses. Have the students help bring and tape the
pieces of flip chart paper to the front wall.
As a group, help the class build on or clarifyany responses, if necessary. For example, askthem who can help them learn more aboutmoney and banking? (financial advisor/banker)
Referring to the questions and the studentsresponses, show that they have set up whattheir apprenticeship will entail.

Closing & Teach Back Time: 7 Minutes
Review what you covered in this session by having a student check off the different partsof the agenda.
Introduce the way you will end each class. Asking each student to write or present 1 thingthey learned and 1 question that they have about anything. They can use oral presentationskills to present, or can write it on a scrap paper.
Model both to show what it looks like. Ask TL to record presentations, or take notes ofwhat the students mention for things learned and questions that remain.

Planning the Lesson
Opening Ritual: Calculate Interest Earned/Update Accounts Time: 15 Minutes
Show initial balance for both teams.
Explain that each week the money in each account will earn 5% interest*.Ask if anyone knows what interest is?*Interest is the cost of borrowing money. Bank pays you interest to keep your moneythere, just as you pay interest to a bank or credit card company to borrow money fromthem. When you save your money in a bank, they pay you interest.-One week has gone by; each team can earn 5% interest.-Have each team calculate the interest they have earned and add it to their initial balanceto find the starting balance for the day. Model how to calculate interest. Math level willvary so it may be necessary to have students help each other or allow more time forclarification. 5% = 5/100 = 1/20; 1/20 x 500 = 25; 500 + 25 = 525-In order for a team to earn their interest, they have to calculate it.

Each team has 10 minutes to design, draw anddescribe the perfect college candidate. Draw, write ordescribe how your candidate would do in eachcategory we just learned. They can refer to both walls.Once 10 minutes are up, each team will present theircandidate and answer questions to see if they havewhat it takes to get into college.

Students can present one thing theylearned and one remaining question using their oral presentation skills or they can write iton a scrap paper. Be sure to take notes on the presentations.

Each teams account manager should report their earnings and deductions from the day.Have them fill out their final deposit slips and hand them in to the CT.
Next week, theyll again get to calculate their interest to find out how much their moneygrew from having saved it in the account. Theyll also find out, if they want to, how theycan spend their money week to week, or at the end.

so that for our WOW, we can offer them advice onhow to get ready for college. Last week we learned
what colleges look at and today well interview our
clients to try and find that information out.
