TALK ON THE BLOCK DOREMY. DONGIN. MELIKE. RACHELLE. SHAHREZAD
TALK ON THE BLOCK collects your stories and visions, block by block. By creating your own neighborhood map, thinking about the past, present and future, you own your block. TALK ON THE BLOCK uses what you shared to contribute into the culture around new businesses.
WHO?
PROBLEM SPACENEW BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY
The problem NYCOPI has identified is how gentrification has a negative effect on new businesses. There are issues of distrust towards newcomers that builds on a lack of community acceptance. The local community boards may also be too much of a policy routine to allow any empathetic conversations between entrepreneurs with good intentions and locals with open-minds. TALK ON THE BLOCK aims to neutralize the tension by keeping the concerns of local historic values and balancing a positive economic development.
TALK ON THE BLOCK provides local residents and potential business owners (entrepreneurs) with information that would take years to research. Residents are given the platform to express what businesses they would like on their block. As the valuable information is collected, TALK ON THE BLOCK uses the data to compose business models and proposals. The suggested business proposals will be provided on our online website where entrepreneurs can reference to recognize their business that will both respect the locals as well as benefit their hopes for monetary profit.
MISSION STATEMENT
TALK ON THE BLOCK provides an interactive map that allows citizens on each block to see what businesses already exist and identify what they want. TOTB holds a workshop to design business models from ideas collected from the residents of the block together with resident and potential business owners (entrepreneurs). We provides data of what community members need and want, and possible business models has been developed directly to ‘Department of Small Business Services’ and ‘Department of City Planning’ as well as on our website. So that government can have better idea of needs and wants in this area, and idea of possible business models. Also entrepreneurs or new business owners can plan for their business through our website.

TIMELINE OF IMPLEMENTATION
EXPECTED IMPACTBUILDING EMPATHY, COMPASSION, EMPOWERMENT FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND LOCAL COMMUNITY
The success of our project will result to build up empathy, compassion, and empowerment for both the entrepreneurs and the local community. More start-ups will open with values and services that are influenced by the local desires; resulting in a more accepted business category, well-recognized business service models, and long-term profiting returns. The local community will learn to know that their opinions are sought after and are valuable to expand and benefit the neighborhood. Resulting in an increase of the community’s sense of power and control towards where they call home.
We are aiming to desaturate the concentration of certain businesses in order to make New York city more holistic and diverse block by block.
