Naveen Singla is passionate about driving better decisions using data and analytics. He has more than 10 years of experience finding meaning in data for applications in the areas of biometrics, high-frequency stock trading, and most recently, agriculture. He is the Data Science Center of Excellence Lead and Director of Analytics at Monsanto working with talented and inquisitive people to transform the world’s oldest profession.

During his tenure at Monsanto, he has helped grow the value realized from data science and to establish a data-driven mindset by developing strategies, influencing leaders, and implementing solutions all towards the goal of improving food security. A constant learner, he has established a learning program and culture for Monsanto’s 500 strong data science community. In 2018, Naveen was awarded the Ones to Watch award from the CIO and the CIO Executive Council.

Naveen derives energy from connecting different ideas and bringing people together to solve real-world problems. During his Bachelor’s study in Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, India, he was inspired by Claude Shannon’s ideas on transmitting information on noisy channels and decided to pursue a PhD at Washington University in St. Louis in the same field. There he studied Bayesian inference which led him to delve deeper into how machines learn structure from data - that’s how it all began.

He enjoys reading books on the history of mathematics and is currently working on his toughest assignment – teaching math to his 6-year old daughter.

Monsanto at a Glance

Monsanto is a global modern agriculture company. We develop products and tools to help farmers around the world grow crops while using energy, water, and land more efficiently. We believe innovation has the potential to bring humanity’s needs in balance with the resources of our planet.

Through programs and partnerships, we collaborate with farmers, researchers, nonprofit organizations, universities and others to help tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges. We work to find sustainable solutions for soil health, help farmers use data to improve farming practices and conserve natural resources, and provide crop protection products to minimize damage from pests and disease.

Innovative SolutionsWe’re working to create tools to help farmers collect and analyze data about their land and resources. This allows farmers to maximize the effectiveness of all the tools they use. We also use data analytics to drive many of our platforms, including RNAi technology, greenhouse automation, metabolomics, and automated screening.

To overcome the challenges agriculture faces, we must innovate and develop new products faster. With the next generation of farming at our doorstep, it’s time for all of us to grow. By combining with Bayer, we will bring together the very best crop protection and seed technology. We will increase the speed of innovation and get tools to farmers faster.
