‘Take Notice’

Welcome to the new school year! ‘Take Notice’. You will often here this referred to during 2018. ‘Take Notice’ stems from our Positive Education framework and is one of the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’. As parents, you are the source of your child’s affirmation. Children will believe what the people they love and trust believe, including how they feel about school and their own ability to learn. So, after praise and encouragement, en-courage perseverance. Perseverance, or persistence, is a wonderful quality that will serve our young people well, now and into the future. Finally, I encourage parents and carers to make an appointment to meet with me as soon as possible if they have

concerns about the payment of school feels.

I am excited about the year ahead and wish you all a very happy and enjoyable 2018.

Father, we pray for a continued harmonious family and eagerness to contribute to the needs of the San Clemente Community. May we continue to work with love, care, and teamwork. We go forth in unity and purpose as we do our part in building each other up in the various natural gifts and learned skills You have given us. We strive for unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God. Amen

May St Dominic continue to watch over our school community.

Assistant Principal—Wellbeing

A very warm welcome to all new and returning families to the San Clemente community. In 2018, as with every year, we are aiming to provide students with an array of opportunities both in and out of the classroom. San Clemente realises the individual strengths and uniqueness of all students and is committed to reaching and connecting with all in our community. Already students have engaged in these opportunities with a high level of energy and spirit. San Clemente has approached 2018 with the theme of “Take Notice” and these many opportunities are not simply “add-ons” to the curriculum but strategically planned events that provide both staff and stu-dents an opportunity to express their strengths and contribute to the bigger picture of being a part of a Catholic school.

Our first day for Year 7 also included 60 Year 10 Peer support leaders. These students gave of their own time to support both staff and students on the day. The peer support program, led by Mr Marsh was outstanding, with a particular focus on introducing our Year 7 students to the 5 Ways of Wellbeing and our strength based approach to school life. As has been mentioned many times, San Clemen-te is not a high school you attend and just SURVIVE, it is our goal that all students have an opportunity to THRIVE within our communi-ty.

The launch of the Tony Kelly Cup house competition this week was greeted with energy as our four Houses introduced Year 7 students to some friendly rivalry and energetic school spirit.

Our Opening Liturgy on Wednesday last week provided an opportunity for the school to recognise Leadership. With special guest, As-sistant Director, Paul Greaves attending the assembly, it was a reminder of the quality leaders being produced at San Clemente. Con-gratulations to our School Leadership Team for 2018. Our future leaders will have further opportunities to connect and be active during the Year 7 camp next week. A huge thanks to Mrs Denham and her team for the organisation of this event.

Ministry Leaders- of this portfolio will be active con-tributors to the faith life of our school. They will place emphasis on creating relevant, challenging and engag-ing prayer and liturgy opportunities.

Stewardship - Leaders of this portfolio will focus on care for all. This is an essential part of being a Catholic community, where we see a need, and we act.

Jessica Pelley Kolivette Va

Caitlin Byrne Kallum Hobson

Cultural - Leaders of this portfolio will inspire others to express themselves creatively, to en-courage participation and to inspire innovation.

Sport - Leaders of this Portfolio will promote sport as a highly valued element of San Clemen-te as it leads towards its mission of developing the whole person. Sport provides an avenue for social, physical and emotional development and it is an important expression of school spirit and the culture of San Clemente.

Shelby Fanning Andrew Paksec

Liam Cook Finlay Doyle

House - Leaders of this portfolio will be drivers of the house competition and the Tony Kelly Cup. They will work alongside Year Coordinators, Teach-ing and learning coordinators and teachers to arrange a broad variety of competitions across a range of areas to ensure all students have the op-portunity to show their strengths.

Assistant Principal—Curriculum Report

At last week’s assembly I shared with students what a privilege it is to have joined the San Clemente educational com-munity that is so well respected throughout the Newcastle and Hunter region.

In the relatively short time that I have been on the school site, I have been the recipient of so many warm welcoming messages and gestures from staff, students and families that are much appreciated. I have already witnessed the commitment of the staff to the holistic education of students and conversations with staff and students have high-lighted the high standard of education that characterises this school.

During my initial weeks at San Clemente, I have also formed a strong opinion that San Clemente is also a vibrant Cath-olic community that authentically celebrates Dominican education and aspires to continue the fine traditions that were initially provided by the Dominican Sisters on this site for just over a century. At the assembly Mr Donohoe shared with students my great appreciation for the Dominican charism that was nurtured over the last seven years of my teaching and administrative career at St Mary’s Maitland. I am thrilled to continue my teaching journey in another Dominican school, because I know how special the Dominican charism is and to share the virtues of St Dominic is in-spiring for our students.

At the start of next week students will take home a booklet outlining the Assessment Guidelines that govern assess-ment at San Clemente. The NESA and Diocesan policies that govern assessment and learning are outlined in this book-let. In reading this material, San Clemente’s commitment to the highest standard of education and procedures in place to support all students reach their personal best academically will be clearly evident.

Whilst Assessment Tasks are a part of the formal teaching and learning programs we deliver to your child, we under-stand this can be a daunting process for students and their parents. Together with the comprehensive information contained on the San Clemente Website (www.mayfieldsanc.catholic.edu.au), this booklet aims to help you under-stand the assessment requirements to allow each student to experience success.

It is important that students understand the procedures in place for late or non-submission of tasks. This booklet out-lines all school procedures and provides a hard copy of each document. All these documents can be downloaded from the school’s website. Most importantly, the booklet reminds students of the support the school provides to complete their learning tasks.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or Teaching and Learning Coordinator if we can support your child in any way.

It is a privilege to be working with you and your child supporting them to reach their best academically.

Emma Tierney, Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning)

The Opening School Liturgy also acknowledged former students for their excellent ROSA results. Presentations were made to:

Jack Robinson Bronte Skinner Alexander McEwan Gemma Balkin Max Noble

Again this year when addressing the staff on our first day I posed the question – “How do we achieve excellence in Wellbeing at SCM?”. Overwhelmingly the response was – building strong relationships and connections. For our school community to thrive in this area those connections need to be three way - staff, students and parents. I en-courage all parties to communicate whenever the need arises. Our Year Coordinators still work off the mantra of “call early, call often” and I encourage parents to do the same. San Clemente is an open and welcoming community and I particularly encourage our new families to enquire about progress, keep communication lines open and not hesitate to contact myself or Year Coordinators. I look forward to working with all students and families in 2018.

Nathan Beckett, Assistant Principal (Wellbeing)

Year 10 News

Welcome back! Year 10 students have transitioned seamlessly in to new classes and teachers. I am very excited to con-tinue being the Year Coordinator of such a great group of young men and women. It gives me great pleasure to an-nounce the Year 10 Mentor Team for 2018, who play a vital role in the wellbeing of all students:

Aquinas – Mrs. Bonnie Rae Dixon – Mrs. Emma McCarthy

Gilroy – Mrs. Pippa Hartshorne MacKillop – Mrs. Lynette van Zeeland

O’Donohoe – Mrs Emma South Polding – Mrs. Desley Sharman

Tenison – Mr. Mitch Allan Therry – Mrs. Julia Nolan

During their first Year Meeting for the term, I presented the theme for students for the upcoming year of living in the moment. In their final year at San Clemente High School, my hope is for students to be content that they made the ab-solute best of the opportunities presented to them by avoiding “sticking points” academically and socially. I communi-cated to all students ways to develop a growth mindset by not dwelling on mistakes that we all will inevitably make in the classroom or in our connections with others. The importance of viewing errors/ challenges as opportunities to im-prove and making the best of each day is necessary to appreciate the present.

The Assessment Booklet for Term 1 will soon be available on the school website after distribution in Home Rooms next week. There is no better time than now to get organised! Start tracking the due dates of your assessment tasks and en-sure they are started well in advance.

Up next for Year 10:

February 26: Brainstorm – Cyberia. Year 10 students will watch a dramatic presentation on the topics of Cyber Bul-lying, Digital Citizenship and using social media effectively.

February 28: Swimming Carnival

March 14: Elevate Education Information Day & Evening (more information to follow)

Shout-Outs:

A big thank you to the approximately 60 Year 10 students who assisted with peer support for Year 7 students on their first day.

A reminder to all parents/ carers, if you have any concerns or questions about your child’s wellbeing, please don’t hesitate in contacting me on 4014 7300 or at [email protected]

Nicholas Marsh, Year 10 Coordinator (Wellbeing)

Year 8 News

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Year 8 students and their parents and carers. Especially to our new stu-dents and families who have commenced Year 8 at San Clemente. My name is Kate Tolfree and I am the year 8 Wellbe-ing Coordinator. I am fortunate to be spending my second year with this cohort.

Year 8 have returned more confident, re-energised, and have definitely grown over the break. The theme for this year is “Take Notice”. We spoke at length about taking notice during our first year assembly. I encourage students to take no-tice of others around them, including school and home; to take notice of their surrounds, of their school work and also of their emotions and interactions with others.

I am very thankful to the students for their settled and positive start to 2018. The standard Year 8 have set with uniform is outstanding! Keep up the high standard you have set.

I encourage all parents to be part of their student’s education. There is a huge amount of research that states that when parents are involved in their children’s education at home, their children perform better at school. Their performance is further enhanced if there is a good relationship between teacher and parents based on mutual respect. Our open door policy encourages open communication between home and school. Please don’t hesitate to contact myself or any staff member at any stage with regard to your son or daughter.

Congratulations to Isaac Ta’avale who was selected as a part of a 24 member group to complete the Tim Cahill’s Foxtel Ambitions Tour Academy for Soccer. Isaac completed a 5 day intensive camp over the Christmas holidays. Check out the school’s facebook site for the full story.

Year 9 Matters

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Year 9 students and their parents/carers. My name is Patrick Doyle and I am the Year 9 Coordinator (Wellbeing) for 2018. This will be my third year with this year group and I feel very confident that Year 9 will continue to raise the bar in all areas of their school life. I can assure you that I will exert all my energy this year to ensure that your son/daughter is cared for at San Clemente, with their best interests always my number one priority. If you have any concerns at all about your child’s welfare or require information regarding examinations, excursions or up-coming events PLEASE contact me.

My e-mail address is [email protected] alternatively the schools phone number is 4014 7300.

In Year 9’s first year meeting I talked about the opportunities a new year provides. The new year allows us to set new goals, start afresh, reflect on the previous year and make adjustments where required. I encouraged all Year 9 to make 2018 their most successful school year yet. Areas to focus on include ensuring all assessment and homework tasks are completed on time and with maximum effort. Entering school and each lesson with the right attitude and commitment. Being respectful to staff and other students and of course never giving up and quitting when the challenge appears too difficult. I emphasised to Year 9 to not make excuses but search for solutions.

This year San Clemente is challenging students to Take Notice in all areas of their life. Taking notice is being more aware of the present moment, including your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you. This awareness can positively change the way you feel about life and how you approach challenges. It can also involve taking notice of your learning and strengths. Parents, please take notice of your child’s academic habits. Encourage and support them, assist them with their organisational skills and monitor their assessment schedules/tasks. If you are concerned about your child’s academic progress in a particular subject I encourage you to make contact with the relevant subject teacher, soon-er rather than later.

Finally, I ask parents to support the school in our efforts to ensure the correct school/sports uniform is always worn. The majority of Year 9 is maintaining this standard and I commend them and thank parents for supporting the school. Howev-er, some students have decided to wear trainers/canvas shoes instead of black leather school shoes. Socks must be plain white and above the ankle, hair beyond shoulder length must be tied up and nose piercings should never be worn. If you have any concerns or confusion regarding the schools uniform policy, please contact me. A final thought Year 9,

“There will be obstacles. There will be doubters. There will be mistakes. But with hard work, there are no limits.”

Patrick Doyle Year 9 Coordinator (Wellbeing)

Year 7 Students

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all Year 7 students and their families to the San Clemente community. It has been a very busy start to the year and our Year 7 students have settled into high school in a seamless manner. High school is a very big leap from primary school and it is normal for students or parents to feel anxious and have concerns. They have dealt with new staff, structures, different teachers, changing classrooms, bus routines to name but a few of the challenges and I have been very impressed with the way Year 7 have handled themselves.

It was fantastic to see so many parents and guardians at the welcome liturgy on our first day, as I mentioned the theme throughout the school is ‘Take Notice’. I challenged our Year 7 students to apply this in a practical sense. To take notice of their surroundings and appreciate what an amazing country we live in and a fantastic school we have. My role as Wellbe-ing Coordinator encompasses the care of your child over the next 4 years. I will strive to support, care and challenge your child. I may not always get it right, but I can assure you I will take notice of your child and be their advocate here at school.

Year 7 have been inundated with notes over the last week, and the vast majority of them have been returned as request-ed. Year 7 camp is on 12th to 14th of February at Pt Wolstoncroft. I am certain that all students will enjoy the camp expe-rience and make new friends!

Finally, I ask parents to support the school in our efforts to maintain a high uniform standard. If you have any questions regarding the uniform, please feel free to contact your child’s mentors or myself. See the list on the next page of Mentor Classes, teachers and their contact email address should you need to be in contact for any reason. On 21st February we will be holding a Welcome Evening for Year 7 families, there will be more information on this posted on the website and facebook.

Please feel free to contact me on [email protected] or 40147300.

Bronwyn Denham, Year 7 Coordinator (Wellbeing)

Careers Corner

A belated Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and a big warm welcome to ‘Career’s Corner’ for 2018.

This is going to be my fourth year as Careers Advisor at San Clemente – a position that I feel passionate about and one that I am really looking forward to once again exploring with both Year 9 and Year 10 students.

The following 12 months will be an extremely busy time for both Year 9 and Year 10. I encourage both students and parents/carers to;

regularly read ‘Career’s Corner’

check emails

browse the continually updated San Clemente website

engage in regular conversations with your sons/daughters in order to remain up to date with any upcoming events relating to Careers 2018.

Stage 5 students (Years 9 and 10) will attend 1 Careers lesson per fortnight – therefore attendance at these classes is vital!. A single missed lesson means that I will not see that student for another month.

Remember when referring to emails – CHECK, READ, and RESPOND…that is;

Check daily, Read carefully, and Respond promptly!!!

Some students have already attended their first Careers lesson for the year, with Term 1 focussing on different aspects of this subject depending on which year your child is in;

Year 9 will be looking at what they enjoy participating in outside of school, what their favourite subject/s are and the reason behind this, and associated career matching based on a number of factors including personality traits.

Year 10 will be focussing on career interest testing and associated personal research, initiating individual student transition plans, and exploring the changes that one goes through when determining their future career path.

Year 10 will also have the opportunity to undertake Work Experience throughout this year with some students, who are seriously considering entering the work force at the completion of 2018, participating during Week 10 of Term 1. I will be meeting with ALL of Year 10 shortly to discuss this option in more detail but I would encourage parents/carers to start having relevant conversations with their child if they are seriously considering not going on to Years 11/12. It should be noted that Work Experience is open to ALL Year 10 students, with most participate during Week 6 of Term 4.

Save the following date:

Wednesday 14th March (Week 7) – Year 10 Careers Day & Information Evening at San Clemente

Please note that there will be more information made available closer to this event.

As well as Year 9 and 10 Careers lessons, I am also available for individual appointments with students and parents/carers. If you would like to meet with me to discuss your child’s career direction, subject selection for Years 11/12, op-tions for University, TAFE or Apprenticeship, or even getting casual work, please contact me at school on (02) 40147300 or via e-mail at [email protected] to organise a suitable time.

I am really looking forward to working closely with all Year 9 and 10 students throughout 2018, and would encourage parents/carers to contact me with any questions regarding the future career path of their child.

Mathematics

Welcome to 2018 from the Maths Faculty at San Clemente.

2018 is an interesting number- it only has 4 factors – 1, 2, 1009 and 2018 and a very short prime factorisation-

Homework Booklets

All students have started working through the content for Term 1 and will have made some headway in their first Homework Booklet. Don’t forget the answers are available on the school’s Moodle site and stu-dents should be marking their work AS THEY COMPLETE it each evening to check they have the correct understanding of the concepts covered.

Maths and Milo

If students need any assistance they are welcome to attend Maths and Mi-lo. Every Thursday D1 is opened up during lunchtime for students to prac-tice their Maths, complete their Homework or seek assistance from teachers - all while having a cup of Milo and some choc-chip cookies. It is a fun, relaxed and social way for stu-dents to discuss their Maths with each

Maths ASAP

Next Monday the Maths After School Assistance Program (ASAP) is offered to Year 9 and 10 students. This is a free Maths tutoring service for interest-ed students and goes from 3-4pm in D1. There are generally 3-4 teachers who volunteer their time to help students with their work. Notes have been given in classes and can also be collected from Ms Wilks. The pro-gram starts on Monday 12 February.

Year 8 Maths Excursion –

Inquisitive Minds

On 15 February all Year 8 students will participate in the Inquisitive Minds Problem, Patterns, Pictures and Puzzles Workshop. The work-shop sees students immersed in mathematical and logical thinking as they learn and utilise foundational and advanced problem solving strat-egies. St Francis Xavier’s College has again generously allowed us to use their Hall (hopefully 2019 we will be able to use our own Hall) for the event and students will be transport-ed by bus for their hour long work-shop. Some Year 10 students have also volunteered to attend to assist students as well as help with the marking of the problems.

2017 Successes- Accelerated Maths

Eleven of our Year 9 students completed their Year 9 and 10 Maths studies in the one year and will their year start their HSC studies whilst still at San Clemente. Congratulations to Alec Chapman, Jay Deamer, Blake Dougherty, Shelby Fanning, Ivy Griffin, Zachary Hands-Pearce, Paige Harrison, Annabelle Jones, Andrew Paksec, Jack Seysener and Noah Skoljarev. Thanks to Mrs Jane Ayerst for taking the students through the program with such success.

Two former San Clemente students, Patrick Nolan and Isabella Hawke, completed their HSC in Advanced Maths early as they had also taking part in the Accelerated program in Year 9. Pat and Isa-bella will this year undertake the rest of their HSC but sat their HSC early last year for their Maths studies. Both achieved high Band 5 in the subject and are to be congratulated for this wonderful achieve-ment.

Years 7 and Year 8 (Stage 4) classes will spend Semester 1 studying Geography.

Year 7 Geography will be studying Landscapes and Landforms, where we will be attending a fieldwork day at a local beach, more on this to come.

Year 8 Geography is studying Place and Liveability; they will soon start to prepare for the Globally Called project.

Years 9 and 10 (Stage 5) classes will spend Semester 2 studying History.

Year 9 History will study Movements of People; they will also be undertaking a mandatory historical site study.

Year 10 will be studying Changing Rights and Freedoms.

For new students and parents/carers to the school, assessment tasks for HSIE are uploaded to the schools website. Stu-dents are given at least two weeks notification of an assessment task due date. It is encouraged that the students speak to their classroom teacher or myself if there are any issues about these tasks being handed in on time or not under-standing how to complete the task.

There are lots of exciting projects, new fieldwork tasks, guest speakers and activities that will be implemented in the HSIE faculty this year and I encourage all students to become involved in their learning and to do their BEST.

A big thank you to the San Clemente Community for their generosity with the 2017 Vinnies Christmas Appeal. Over 2 dozen boxes of food and gifts were do-nated to our local Vinnies chapter for distribution among the community for Christmas. A cheque for $252.50 was also presented to our Vinnies representa-tive, to assist those in need over the Christmas period.

Hello and welcome to all of our new Year 7 students and parents / carers.

For each newsletter, I will present some information about Literacy. This

year our school is placing special emphasis on improving WRITING for all

students in all subjects. Polishing our writing skills does not just happen

in our English classes. To improve writing students need to focus on

writing clear and meaningful sentences. Consider adding variety to sen-

tence starters. Here are a few ideas that you might find helpful.
