It was a chilly Friday morning as runners get ready for the 6th Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon on 21st January 2011. More than 1,300 runners are set to join the 42km marathon, while almost 6,800 men and women go for the 10km road race.

Takbo para kay Kabayan is a fundraising activity organised by the Filipino Runners UAE and Migrante UAE to coincide with the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. It was a collective effort of our group to run a total of more than 800km as our way of reaching out to our distressed countrymen and raising people’s awareness that something has to be done. Proceeds of the project will go to Filipino patients in Rashid Hospital who are in dire need of financial assistance; education and training workshops which include skills enhancement and knowing the basic rights of expat workers; and repatriation of distressed migrants staying at the POLO-OWWA Center in Abu Hail, Dubai.

The road towards achieving our goal was not easy. In between our regular trainings we had to hold meetings to make sure that everything was covered – from pledge kits, solicitation letters for sponsors, publicity materials, PR and media efforts and pledges monitoring.

None of us had an extensive experience on fundraising activities like this, but we did not lose heart knowing that we can always rely on each other. We had no budget to start with but we were able to capitalise on each and every runner’s resources in order to make both ends meet.

By December we started approaching companies and organizations who can be the group’s sponsors in the form of monetary contribution, goods or services to help us assist in covering our major expenses. Despite the fact that we had no track record yet, only our sincere intention to help our needy countrymen, the support that we received from our sponsors was overwhelming:

The momentum continued to build up in the early weeks of January. Full Circle, a group of Filipino photographers has come forward and volunteered to be the offi cial group to cover our pre-event publicity photos and overall event coverage. Some of the members of our group were able to capitalize on various media contacts – and we are very pleased with the vast media coverage that our group, and our fundraising activity have received in the weeks prior to the Dubai Marathon.

After months of training, collection of pledges and donations and negotiations with sponsors, we were fi nally gathered together to fi nish what we have started. We had lots of challenges along the way but that did not keep us from crossing the fi nish line.

The success of the recently concluded Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon mirrored the success of our fundraising campaign, Takbo para kay Kabayan – where we have proven that by working and striving together, we can achieve each and every goal that we set. We have proven that we can do something meaningful and help other people while we do and get better on the sport that we are very passionate about…Running.

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the members of the Filipino Runners UAE, Migrante International, friends and volunteers whose support and collective efforts made this activity a huge success. I admire your discipline, commitment and perseverance and I hope that we keep the spirit of unity, sportsmanship and camaraderie.

This is only a beginning of a long and exciting journey for all of us. I am very honored to be a part of this young and dynamic group – promising and competitive, but above all things, runners with a big heart, always willing to share, always willing to help.

Mabuhay ang Filipino Runners UAE at Migrante International!

The “Run for our Countrymen” is indeed a success.

A success that can be viewed not from the number of pledges that we collected or from the number of benefi ciaries that we have served but from the fact that, we, once again proved that patriotism still runs through our bloodstreams even though we are abroad.

The Migrante International, an organization that values the achievements of migrant Filipino workers, recognizes your compassionate endeavor as patriotic runners. The patriotism that you have just expressed through the Takbo para kay Kabayan is overwhelming and worth emulating.

On the other hand, we cannot deny the reality that sufferings and injustices continuously occur in the lives of many Filipino migrant workers. We are still treated as milking cows of our own government and concrete programs that will uphold our human rights as migrant workers are yet to be found.

The mentioned migrant’s issues clearly tell us that charity programs, even though of good motive, are not enough to realize the society in which Filipino families are not forced to be broken up in order to survive. Aside from charity works, we must also need to support advocacies that expose and fi ght against government policies that make the lives of migrant workers more miserable.

Together with our gratefulness and appreciation, we challenge the Filipino Runners UAE to widen your social awareness and deeply analyze the root causes that burden us into poverty and sufferings.

May the Filipino Runners UAE always be with us in promoting programs and advocacy campaigns that will truly serve our countrymen.

Mabuhay ang Filipino Runners UAE! Mabuhay ang Migrante International!

Mabuhay ang Filipino migrant workers in the UAE!

Isang mapagpala at mapagpalayang araw sa ating lahat.

Bayanihan is at work! Being “Bayanis” or heroes to each other is very much alive.

This laudable Filipino trait is alive in the project that our Filipino runners in UAE will undertake for our less fortunate “kababayans” in partnership with Migrante International UAE. The former, while running to stay fit and have fun, will support the latter’s projects like Sagip Migrante, Education and Training for OFWs and Repatriation.

The above cooperation puts into concrete action the vision that I am proposing for all of us Filipinos and friends of Filipinos in the UAE: “A world class country team (government) partnering with Team Bayanihan (NGO’s and civil society) to exemplify “Global Taas Noo Filipinos.”

We can discuss the way forward and strategy on this as I remain committed to be with you in our common passion and efforts to help Filipinos in need. Like, partnering in the forthcoming Training of Trainors for Financial and Entrepreneurial Literacy under the PINOY W.I.S.E (Worldwide Initiative for Saving’s Investment and Entrepreneurship program).

Mabuhay po tayong lahat.
