Expecting a baby

Impression on the Pressure Cooker

-unreliable / unpractical( 我不會離開老婆去賣這種“鳥鍋” )

-can help him earn a good living

Impressionon

-a remote countryside-kind of being banished

Without having specific bias/preferences

Page 35: TAIWAN’S URBANIZATION: 50S TO 60S

Language 再發 uses Mandarin to promote the pressure

cooker with an elder villager, who answers back in Taiwanese (13:48~14:22)

“Mandarin Campaign”: Mandarin: more urbanized? & Taiwanese: dialect?

再發 & the elder have no trouble understanding

each other

Page 36: TAIWAN’S URBANIZATION: 50S TO 60S

The Transition 王武雄 Begins to love the

countryside as time passes/ meets Vicky

Internalize” with the

pressure cooker: sincerely considers the cooker as sth practical and useful

Page 37: TAIWAN’S URBANIZATION: 50S TO 60S

Regarding Urbanization……

City: a place w/ pressure & expectation → be trapped inside a system

Countryside: generous & friendly villagers -easy atmosphere/ life in slow motion

Page 38: TAIWAN’S URBANIZATION: 50S TO 60S

Time to think…. the failure of promoting the pressure cookers = a failure of

urbanization?

Is modernization/urbanization necessary?

Plot Summary 'The Taste of Apples' tells of a worker

who is run over by an American colonel and then taken to an American military hospital. His large family visits him there, where they are informed of the generous compensation they are due to receive. Moving to the city was perhaps not such a bad idea after all, especially if you are lucky enough to be run down by an American officer! (IMDB)

Sign of Urbanization 1.

Foreign Influence ( Post colonialism)

- Language 1. The interpreting

process in the small house

2. Mother doesn’t know English through walking into the male toilet說「 I’m sorry」,「門怎麼沒鎖好」;

3. Father speaks Mandarin and Taiwanese showing his straight forward talk from an honest man

Page 54: TAIWAN’S URBANIZATION: 50S TO 60S

Question

Do you have any other interpretations for the “apple”?

Page 55: TAIWAN’S URBANIZATION: 50S TO 60S

Conclusion Through the 3 films the transition as well as the

common points between 1950s – 1960 s is shown. In the first film urbanization has already appeared. And to the third one foreign influence cannot be resisted anymore.

Are developed things always good for us? From the pot in “Vicky’s hat” and the car in “The Taste of Apples”, it is a question for us to rethink.
