The Old Saints’ Committee is the voice of the former students from ASC so we want to hear from you. As a useful means of gathering feedback you are invited to complete our first Old Saints’ Survey - the data from which will then be used to guide our planning for the coming year/s to ensure that we are supporting the interests of Old Saints in the best way possible. During the last few months we have continued to develop our focus on volunteering in the community by

introducing the inaugural Old Saints’ Service and Endeavour Award. We have run online tipping competitions, and participated in Heritage Week and the Futures Expo. We have also increased the number of businesses in our online Old Saints’ Business Directory!

Our next exciting evening in the Old Saints’ calendar is Beer, Bubbles and Bites on Friday, 2 November at 5.30pm – with a new format and prizes to be won! It’s time for you to see how ASC has changed! Enjoy the Old Saints’ College Tour with plenty of unique experiences along the way. Catch up with former teachers and peers over a dink and take a trip down memory lane.

Held on Monday, 11 June the 2018 Futures Expo was well-supported by a record number of more than 32 Old Saints attending. They chatted with Year 10 students about their chosen career paths in a relaxed and informal setting.

Thank you to the many Old Saints who so generously gave up their evening to help students gain a better understanding of the wide selection of career choices available. The students commented on how rewarding it is to talk to Old Saints who provide honest, down to earth, facts about their various careers – not just the ultimate rewards, but also the pitfalls and diversions they may have experienced along their career journey. The knowledge they share with current students is invaluable and the Old Saints represented a diverse selection of careers.

ASC Futures Expo

Robert completed his degree in Mechatronics Engineering at Curtin University in 2011 before pursuing a PhD where he designed and built the automated observatories that make up the Desert Fireball Network.

This network enables planetary scientists to unravel the formation and evolution of the

solar system by recovering meteorites with the context provided by their pre-atmospheric entry orbits. Robert now works at Curtin as a Research Engineer in the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences and is currently working on new fireball instrumentation and satellite-tracking observatories in collaboration with Lockheed Martin, as well as a small satellite to observe fireballs from orbit.

Jon Clements (1992)Music Producer, Recording Engineer and Video Director

Jon studied Music at WAAPA and travelled and lived overseas (in Tel Aviv, London, Spain and the US) as a working musician. He moved back to Perth in 2003 and studied Latin at UWA. Jon then moved into a Recording Engineer and Music Production role.

He now works as a writer and producer at his self-built studio, and also as a video artist and director for Grammy and Academy award winning singer/songwriter, Glen Hansard in May 2018. He also provided the originally composed soundtrack to the national award-winning film Come to Me. Jon is a casual staff member and principal study tutor at WAAPA and ECU Mount Lawley.

“Disparities between rural and metropolitan education aren’t going away anytime soon, and education is the most powerful tool we can use to change the world,” said Ben.

“The experience was like no other; the environment is beautiful, the culture is so rich and the children and staff at the school were very inspiring,” said Mitchell.

“The most rewarding aspect of helping others is seeing how much they get out of the program and enjoying those moments of joy with them,” said Niamh

“TLG has an amazing community of volunteers who work tirelessly to produce programs that make a significant impact in rural areas,” said Luke.

The Service Learning program at ASC has grown phenomenally in the last three years and it is rewarding to see so many students carry on the community spirit once they leave. Six Old Saints have continued their involvement with Teach Learn Grow (TLG).TLG’s mission is to ‘improve the educational outcomes and aspirations of rural and Indigenous students in socio-disadvantaged areas so that they can reach their full potential’.

Luke Barber (2016), Ben Chia (2014), Alison Choong (2017), Niamh Doherty (2017), Mitchell Hughes-Owen (2017) and Kyra Belford-Thomas (2016) all agree that their commitment to supporting TLG presents the opportunity to make a tangible impact on the local community and also witnessing the joy on students faces as they learn and engage in the activities.

There are many areas in which you can be involved with TLG - writing interview questions, screening applicants, recruiting, training and supervising coordinators to run the programs across the state. Luke has held many roles and was a Team Manager/Coordinator Support before going to Europe to study; Ben is a Database Officer in the recruitment team; Alison is the TLG Treasurer at Curtin University; Niamh was recently made the TLG President at Curtin; Mitchell is the Vice President at Curtin and also the Database Officer for the logistics team and Kyra is a Coordinator Support Officer. There is a huge amount of work and many are involved to deliver a wide and inclusive program to the rural community.

Why do they all stay committed to TLG? Because it provides the perfect mix of being able to give back to the community and the opportunity to explore some of the rural and remote areas of Western Australia. It builds new lifelong friendships with people who are also committed to bridging the education gap.

The Old Saints’ focus to connect members with volunteer opportunities represents an area where we can give back to the community.The P&F are delighted that seven Old Saints assisted with their ‘Cooking for the Homeless’ on Sunday, 19 August. Old Saints give back to ASC students


Where are they now? Michael left All Saints’ with a vision – to become a journalist and travel the world. He has since gone on to report from the four corners of the globe and is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most significant journalists.

Starting out in 1990 as a cadet with GWN, Michael rose to prominence after covering some of the biggest news events in history, including the 2000

Sydney Olympics, the 9/11 attacks, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the bombings in London and Madrid, and a number of other Commonwealth and Olympic Games. He is now the Network News Presenter and an Investigative Reporter for Channel 7, Sydney.

Michael said All Saints’ helped him prepare for a life of complexity, enabling him to work across many countries and cultures in his nearly 30 year, award-winning career.“I was very lucky to attend a school like All Saints’ which then was very young, and still growing. It had a pioneering spirit, an optimism, and a happy culture of learning. All of this let me believe that anything was possible, and that the world was there to explore. I know those values remain today, and give current students a springboard to learn and live beyond many boundaries after school.”

Michael Usher (1987) Lizz completed a Speech Pathology

degree at Curtin University and then found a passion for understanding the communication difficulties experienced by people with brain injuries. This prompted her to investigate communication following ‘right-hemisphere stroke’ for her honours thesis.

She began her PhD in ‘communication disorders following acquired brain injury in ‘children’. While undertaking her PhD research, Lizz enjoys her work as a sessional academic and lecturer at Curtin University in the areas of statistics and brain behaviour. When Lizz completes her PhD next year she hopes to continue her postdoctoral research internationally, in the area of neurolinguistics and communication disorders following brain injury. Lizz also works as Volunteer Coordinator for Red Carpet Cinema, an organisation that provides social opportunities for young adults with intellectual disabilities.

It was a pleasure to recently welcome Penny, Kylie and Kathy back to ASC.

The talented musicians, Penny (violin), Kylie (violin) and Kathy (viola) were recording with the West Australian Philharmonic Orchestra in the College’s Centre for Performing Arts.

Kylie is a member of West Australian Symphony Orchestra; Penny is Head of Arts at Wesley College in South Perth; and Kathy is a member of Viola Dana, an award-winning band whose goal is to write scores for old, silent movies to share with the community.

Kate thought she would be working as a Health and Physical Education teacher at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth for the rest of her teaching career, but another passion crept into her life – Triathlons!It wasn’t long before Triathlons dominated Kate’s world and 12 years ago she became a full-time Professional Triathlete. Competitions have taken her all over the world - New Zealand, America, Canada, the Canary Islands, Asia and Europe. For the last 10 years Kate has divided her time living six months in Perth and six months in Boise, Idaho USA, which has become her second home. She mainly competes in long course distance events which include three Ironman competitions and the 2016 Female Ultraman World Champion, held in Hawaii.

Kate’s husband, Guy Crawford, is also a Professional Triathlete from New Zealand. Their relationship developed in 2010 at the Hawaii Ironman World Championships. A few months later, Guy moved to Perth; they love being able to share the same experiences and wonderful travel opportunities.

Together they have established their own coaching business GKEndurance (the G and K stand for Guy and Kate!), working with athletes all over the world, but the majority are based in Western Australia. This has given them the opportunity to pass on their knowledge and experience from the last 12 years racing as professional triathletes.

After seeing onion cells through a microscope at the start of Senior School, Kaija was hooked on science. Fast forward a few years and she is now Dr Kaija Strautins, based in British Columbia at the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute in Canada.

Kaija’s enthusiasm for medical science started to take shape during her undergraduate degree where she was able to see how lab-based

experiments can result in real-world applications for people living with complex conditions.

“Since then my studies have been entirely patient-based as that’s where my real passion lies in translational research that connects bench to bedside,” said Kaija.

“The most rewarding part of my role is facilitating medical breakthroughs through clinical trials and patient treatments.”

The Old Saints’ Association is delighted to announce the launch of the inaugural Old Saints’ Service and Endeavour Award.Old Saints who express an interest to engage in charity work in Australia or overseas are invited to apply for a grant up to $5 000 to assist in their extraordinary endeavours. The annual discretionary amount is up to $5 000 per recipient with a maximum of $15 000 awarded in any year.

All recipients of the Old Saints’ Service and Endeavour Award are required to return to the College following their expedition or project to make a presentation to staff and students on their experience and the outcomes achieved. They must also write an article and supply photographs for the Old Saints’ publication, Dovetails. Applicants must adhere to strict criteria and their proposal must align with the College’s service program by giving back to the community.

Natalie Fisher (née Miller, 2000) Natalie completed a Business Degree, majoring in Management and Business Law before she worked as a Fashion Agent for 16 years.

Being passionate about creating magical parties led her to launch Party Perfection which offers

affordable, pre-styled party packages in various themes. Natalie can also deliver and set up the party to take the stress out of your day.

Would you like your washing, ironing and dry-cleaning to be collected and delivered using an Uber-like delivery service which tracks the progress of your washing via an app? Luke’s latest project is a not-for-profit Social Enterprise Laundry Service which employs people with a disability or who find it hard to secure a job. The project is in full

swing and he has already acquired a space which is connected to a Disability Support Centre, and crowdfunding is about to start.

Luke is currently studying a Bachelor of Social Entrepreneurship degree at Ducere Global Business School partnered with University of Canberra, which inspired him to develop his own social enterprise, called Shift Social Impact Lab. His vision is ‘creating a world where social impact is expected’; ‘developing partnerships with

organisations’ and ‘leading and working with the team to create and facilitate the social impact program which benefits the community’.

Shift Social Impact Lab empowers unsustainable not-for-profit and start-ups to become sustainable social enterprises.

Did you know?Noah Gliosca (2017) is the first recipient of an intern position offered at ASC.

Sian Lilford-Powys (2012) (left) recently visited her sister Claire (2008) (right) who now lives in Manchester in the UK. After working as a line chef at an English Gastro-Pub, Claire moved to a specialist coffee house, where she is Head Chef. Sian also works in the hospitality industry in Perth and helps coach the ASC Rowing Squad.

Tasma Hastings (née Gregory, 1993), owns Sticky Fingers Candy Store in Mundaring, so next time you are up that way do pop in and enjoy the best selection of lollies in town!

Lara Kirkwood (2003), was elected a Councillor for the City of Cockburn, East Ward. Congratulations Lara on an amazing achievement.

Australian State Schoolgirls’ and Schoolboys’ 15s AFL National Carnival.

It was a wonderful experience for them to work together as staff members of the State Teams, especially as their football relationship started at All Saints’ College.

Oliver and Katrina are coaches for the Girls’ team as Head Coach and Strength and Conditioning Coach, respectively. Andrew is Assistant Coach of the Boys’ team.

Laura Morton (née Kotchie, 2009)Laura and James have been together for six years and were married at Matilda Bay Reserve on Saturday, 17 March 2018. Laura’s Bridesmaids included three Old Saints, Samantha Kotchie (2013), Laura Bushell (2009) and Sarah Warnock (2009).

The Reception was held at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

Congratulations to Laura and James who enjoyed a five week honeymoon in America, Mexico and Cuba.

Amy Tyers (1998)Congratulations to Amy on bringing Caleb Willoby Tyers safely into the world on Wednesday, 6 June 2018. Caleb weighed in at 3.03kgs and was 50cms.


Nicole Everett (née Koch, 2009) and Michael Everett (2009)Nicole and Michael were childhood sweethearts in Year 11 and nine years later they celebrated their love and married on Saturday, 23 December 2017. The ceremony and reception were held at Araluen botanical gardens.

Among the wedding guests were 17 Old Saints including those in the bridal party: Vikky Brown (2009) - Maid of Honour, Samantha Griffiths (2009) - Bridesmaid, Jono Gibson (2009) - Groomsman, Jason Robbshaw (2009) – Groomsman, and Bryn Jones (2009) - Groomsman.

On Christmas day, Nicole and Michael flew to New Zealand for their honeymoon.

Katrina Goods (née Harris, 2007)Congratulations to Katrina and Paul Goods who were married on Saturday, 21 April 2018 in Eagle Bay. Katrina glowed and looked absolutely stunning.

There was a reading by Katrina’s twin brother, Steven Harris (2007), and the following Old Saints formed the Bridal Party: Catriona Cowden, Jennifer Dawson and Melanie Winata (2007) were Bridesmaids, Travis Harris (1998) a Groomsman and Deborah Ngooi (née Ng, 2007) played the piano. Surrounded by 80 guests at a beautiful private property, the relaxed wedding party danced and laughed through the night.

Heritage Week: Old Saints win the coveted sports shieldHeritage Week culminated in the annual Old Saints v Students’ Sports Event on Friday, 4 May in the ASC Indoor Sports Centre.The Old Saints retained the shield defeating the students after a tightly-fought battle in soccer, netball and basketball games. All matches were played in a fun and friendly manner, and it was wonderful to see 23 Old Saints return to the College to compete against a number of students from Years 7 - 12.

Thank you to our sausage sizzlers, Karyn Osmetti (2006), Sue Wilson (née Leslie, 1985) and Adrienne Wright (née Hartley, 1986) for keeping the players fed and watered. No Old Saints event would be complete without Aaron Musgrave (2013) supplying music and sound effects.

The Old Saints were delighted to support and celebrate the sixth annual Heritage Week at ASC. Old Saint volunteers cooked more than 600 sausages for Junior and Senior School students and raised more than $750.00 in aid of Living Child, founded in 2013 by Old Saint midwife, Sara David (née Lindegger,1987). Living Child is a not-for-profit, non-government charity that aims to reduce the maternal and infant death rate in remote villages of Papua New Guinea.
