PLANNING AHEAD!!!! I know that our show is still a ways off, but I believe in planning ahead. I am hoping that someone out there in our membership either has a number of geodes they would be willing to donate or would be willing to purchase some. Of course the club would be footing the bill. Then our members could volunteer to open them at the show for a fee. I think it would be a great kids activity. If anyone out there would like to volunteer, please let me know. Thanks Melanie Capps 208-818-2363 or www.melaniecapps123com

BIRTHSTONES BY MONTH Traditionally, a birthstone is associated with each month of the year. For example, the birthstone for January is a garnet, while lucky babies born in April get a diamond as their birthstone. The origin of birthstones is believed to date back to the breastplate of Aaron which contained twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel. The current list dates back to 1912 with only one addition since then – the tanzanite was added to December. There are numerous legends and myths about birthstones and their therapeutic influence. According to these legends, wearing a gemstone during its assigned month heightened its healing powers. For the full effect, individuals needed to own all twelve and alternate them monthly.

JANUARY BIRTHSTONE - Garnet Garnet, the birthstone for January, signifies eternal friendship and trust and is the perfect gift for a friend. Garnet, derived from the word granatum, means seed, and is called so because of the gemstone's resemblance to a pomegranate seed. References to the gemstone dates back to 3100 B.C., when the Egyptians used garnets as inlays jewelry. Garnet is the name of a group of minerals that comes in a rainbow of colors, from the deep red of the pyrope garnet to the vibrant green of tsavorites. Today, the most important sources for garnet are Africa, Sri Lanka, and India.

Anyone having a speaker in mind for those two meetings should please contact him. In January, a local geologist will be the speaker. Steve will be leading a camping trip to Wiley Wells on January 15th. Please let him know if you are interested. Clyde gave a report on the Anderson Mine field trip of November, and said that this month’s trip will be at his house where members will be welcome to go through his piles of extra rocks. That begins at 9:00AM. Ronnie said that the Rock Shop is doing well. Keith Horst volunteered to have some teaching sessions for members for free at the Rock Shop. The Shop will be closed the last two weeks of December for the Holidays. Melanie, our show chairman, announced that the brochures for the 2015 show are ready, and anyone attending any rock shows in the area should take some and begin passing them out. Sharon, our Raffle Chairman, reminded everyone to be sure that they had gotten their free ticket for the Christmas raffle. Gail Walker, Hospitality Chairman, thanked everyone who helped with the setup, and thanked in advance all who would help with the cleanup. A motion was made by Donna Ellis to accept the minutes of the November meeting as written. It was seconded by Terri Greminger. The motion was passed. Keith mentioned that if anyone was interested in taking the new semester of lapidary at Yavapai, there were still a few spots left, so please sign up. Linda thanked Gary Pope and Clyde Griffith for serving on the Board for the last two years. John Munday is the new Independent Director on the Board, Stephanie Allen is the new Club Liaison, and Shane Slay is the new Vice President of Field Trips. All volunteers for 2014 were relieved from duty, and reinstated for 2015. Charlotte Picasso is the new Greeter, Robin Albert is the new Assistant Secretary, and Vince Albert is the Club Historian. Ronnie Wharton made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and it was seconded by Stephanie Allen. The motion was passed. Karyn Bee told us about the activities of the Junior Rockhound members in 2014, and a little gift opening was held for all the Junior Rockhounds that were present. We then lined up to enjoy our delicious buffet luncheon, prepared by the club members. After lunch, the raffle was held. Respectfully submitted by Marguerite M. Ahl, Assistant Secretary
