# Description

10/100BaseT, 10/100BASE-T

A LAN transmission line specification stipulated by IEEE. Transmission speed is 10 or 100 Mbps and the modulation technique is base-band modulation. The cable uses unshielded twisted pair, similar to a telephone wire. 10BaseT is an IEEE standard (802.3) for operating 10 Mbps Ethernet networks (LANs) with twisted pair cabling and a wiring hub.

10Base2 An Ethernet standard that uses a thin coaxial cable. It attaches to the network nodes via BNC connectors in the adapter cards. Also called thin Ethernet, Thin Wire and ThinNet.

110 V.110 is an ITU standard that specifies how data terminal equipment (DTE) with asynchronous or synchronous serial interfaces can be supported on an ISDN network. It uses rate adaptation, which involves a bit-by-bit alignment between the DTE and the ISDN B channel.

ADSL Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL). A communications technology used to transmit digital data at high bandwidth over existing telephone wires to homes and businesses. Unlike regular dial-up phone service, ADSL provides continuously-available, “always on” connection. ADSL is asymmetric in that it uses most of the channel to transmit downstream to the user and only a small part to receive information from the user. ADSL is generally offered at downstream data rates from 512 Kbps to about 6 Mbps. ADSL simultaneously accommodates analog (voice) information on the same line and can be used for video-on-demand services to telephone company customers.

AE Application Entity

Aeonix Aeonix is a Tadiran softswitch system. See “Aeonix” on page 154.

CIR Committed information Rate (CIR). The guaranteed throughput on a Frame Relay access circuit. Actual data throughput may be higher than CIR. CIR is determined as an average over time. The circuit provider determines increments of time.CIR is a bandwidth (expressed in bits per second) associated with a logical connection in a permanent virtual circuit (PVC). Frame relay networks are digital networks in which different logical connections share the same physical path and some logical connections are given higher bandwidths than others. For example, a connection conveying a high proportion of video signals (which require a high bandwidth) could be set up for certain workstations in a company (or on a larger network) and other connections requiring less bandwidth could be set up for all other workstations. Using statistical multiplexing, frame relay assemblers and dissemblers (FRADs), the devices that interconnect to the frame relay network, manage the logical connections so that, for example, those with the video signals (and higher CIRs) get more use of the paths. Because the CIR is defined in software, the network's mix of traffic bandwidths can be redefined in a relatively short amount of time.

CODEC COder-DECoder; Coding/Decoding used to convert voice signals into IP packets and back again. The CODEC is a standard through which voice information can be encoded into data or decoded back to voice information. Both a Coder and Decoder are necessary on both sides of the telephone call since telephone calls occur simultaneously in both directions. A CODEC is the hardware or software that samples analog sound, converts it to digital bits, and outputs it at a predetermined data rate. Some codecs performs compression to save bandwidth. Codecs have names correspondence to ITU standards. For example: G.711a converts analog to digital and back with relatively high quality. Higher quality implies more bits, resulting in higher bandwidth consumption. Lower speed codecs consume less network bandwidth. However, low speed codecs impair quality of audio much more than high-speed codecs because low speed codecs apply poor compression - compression that loses some of the original bits. Each codecs need time to convert the analog to digital and digital to analog, which is called "Packetization Delay".Bandwidth is an extremely important factor in QoS (Quality of Service). MOS (Mean Opinion Score) is an attempt to make a quantifiable benchmark of voice quality. Below are examples of the CODEC, bit rate and mean opinion score: G.711a (toll quality) 64Kbps MOS=4.1, Packetization Delay=1msG.726 16K (32K) MOS =3.8, Packetization Delay=10msG.729AB (cell phone quality) 8K MOS=3.7, Packetization Delay=25msIn Voice over IP, Voice Frame Relay, and Voice over ATM, a DSP software algorithm used to compress/decompress speech or audio signals.

Data Information represented in digital form, including voice, text, facsimile and video.

Data Compression

The reduction of bits required to transmit a specific file or packet of information. Several methods can be used to represent a series of bits by a recognized character.

Data Hub A network hub is a fairly unsophisticated broadcast device. Hubs do not manage any of the traffic that comes through them, and any packet entering any port is broadcast out on all other ports. Since every packet is being sent out through all other ports, packet collisions result-which greatly impedes the smooth flow of traffic. A common use of a four port hub, used for troubleshooting with a Wireshark program.

Data Link Layer

Layer 2 of the OSI model. The entity, which establishes, maintains, and releases data-link connections between elements in a network. Layer 2 is concerned with the transmission of units of information, or frames, and associated error-checking.

DGT Digit (0 to 9, * or #)

DGTL Digital Trunk

DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).A utility that enables a server to dynamically assign IP addresses from a predefined list and limit their time of use so that they can be reassigned. Without DHCP, an IT Manager would have to manually enter in all the IP addresses of all the computers and IP telephones on the network. When DHCP is used, whenever a computer logs onto the network, it automatically gets an IP address assigned to it. DHCP effectively eliminates communication and configuration problems resulting from incorrect information, while reducing administration overheads.

DI Diagnostics

Dial number A number that Identifies a specific entity in the system (for example, trunk, port, NR script) and can be dialed on any device connected to the Aeonix Contact Center, which then attempts to connect the dialing device to the device identified by the dial number.

DID Direct Inward Dialing (same as DDI) trunks. The ability to make a telephone call directly into an internal extension without having to go through the operator. In Centrex this feature allows an outside caller to dial a central business number, as well as an extension number.

NOTE: DID differs from DIL (Direct-In-Line) where a standard, both-way Central Office trunk is programmed to always ring a specific extension or group. Also known as DDI.

Diff-Serv Differentiated Services: The Diff-Serv model divides VoIP traffic into a small number of classes to provide quality of service (QoS).

DIL Direct In-Line (rings in to a destination).A standard, both-way Central Office trunk is programmed to always ring a specific extension or group within the phone system. This contrasts with DID, which allows an external caller to reach an internal extension by dialing a seven-digit Central Office number. A DID trunk is a trunk from the Central Office that passes the last two to four digits of the Listed Directory Number into the phone system, thus allowing the system to switch the call to and ring the correct extension.

DIM Data Interface Module

DISA Direct Inward System Access, gives an outside caller the ability to gain a system dial tone and place calls through the PBX. This is a feature that should be carefully evaluated in order to protect against toll fraud.

DISC Disconnect

Disconnect Supervision

Typically, the DMZ contains devices accessible to Internet traffic, such as Web (HTTP ) servers, FTP servers, and DNS servers. The DMZ term comes from military use, meaning a buffer area between two enemies.

DND Do Not Disturb

DNIS Dialed Number Identification Service is the series of digits that precede your phone call with the number your caller dialed.

DNS Domain Name System (DNS): A server/program that translates URLs to IP addresses by accessing a database maintained on a collection of Internet servers. The program works behind the scenes to facilitate surfing the Web with alpha versus numeric addresses. A DNS server converts a name like mywebsite.com to a series of numbers like 107.22.55.26. Every website has its own specific IP address on the Internet. Typically one or more DNS servers are located in an IP network. The DNS distributed database is used by TCP/IP applications to map between these hostnames and IP addresses, and to provide electronic mail routing information. Each site (university department, campus, company, department within a company, etc.) maintains its own database of information and runs a server program that other systems across the Internet can query. The DNS provides the protocol that allows clients and servers to communicate with each other.

DSP Digital Signal Processors: standardize the different states of a digital signal into an organized and understandable signal. DSP circuits can differentiate between digital signals and digital noise. Signal-to-Noise ratio is one of the most important factors in telephony voice communication because if there is too much noise in a signal, the DSP will be unable to find a signal standard and lose it. DSP circuits always adjust digital signal levels so they can maintain a standard without noise.

Frad Frame Relay Access Device. A router used in a frame relay network.

Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used for wide area networks. It is faster than traditional X.25 networks, because it was designed for today’s reliable circuits and performs less rigorous error detection. It provides for speeds of up to 1.544 Mbps and is suited for data and image transfer. Because of its variable-length packet architecture, it was not the most efficient technology for Real-Time voice and video when it was introduced but with improvements to voice prioritization circuitry and software the Frame Relay option is viable for voice applications.

IP Internet Protocol. The network layer protocol of the TCP/IP (Internet) Protocol Suite.

IP (Internet Protocol)

The network layer protocol of the TCP/IP (internet) Protocol Suite which provides a connectionless service to the higher transport protocol. Internet Protocol is located at 3rd layer of the ISO network model. It is a set of rules used to send and receive messages at the Internet address level. It is responsible for discovering and maintaining topology information and for routing packets across homogeneous networks. IP protocol is widely used in Internet and LAN networks. The purpose of this protocol is to deliver data between computing equipment over the network. The protocol is generally effective but does not guarantee complete and accurate data communications. Combined with TCP, it is commonly known as the TCP/IP platform.

IP 280S Coral FlexSet-IP 280S

IP address This is a 32-bit hardware-independent address assigned to hosts using the TCP/IP protocol suite. A 32-bit number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent across the Internet. A unique IP address is required for each host and network component that communicates using TCP/IP. Each IP address includes a Network ID and a Host ID. Network ID - identifies the systems that are located on the same physical network bounded by IP routers. Host ID - identifies the host within the network. Example: 131.107.3.24Addressing Guidelines:

Network ID cannot be 127. - 127 is reserved for

loopback functions.

Network ID and host ID cannot be 255 (all bits set to 1).

255 is a broadcast address.

Network ID and host ID cannot be 0 (all bits set to 0). 0

means “this network only”.

Host ID must be unique to the network.

MAC Medium Access Controller: a protocol that defines the way workstations gain access to transmission media, most widely used in reference to LANs. For IEEE LANs, the MAC layer is the lower sublayer of the data link layer protocol. Every wireless 802.11 device has its own specific MAC address hard-coded into it. This unique identifier can be used to provide security for wireless networks. When a network uses a MAC table, only the 802.11 radios that have had their MAC addresses added to that network's MAC table will be able to get onto the network.Primary functions:

Controls access to shared media.

Handles the network topologies.

MAC Address

The MAC address is a unique 6 byte address coded on every: network interface card (NIC), FlexSet-IP 280S, UGW card, MG module, etc.

PoE Power over Ethernet (IEEE 802.3af standard).PoE saves time and cost of installing separate power cabling, AC outlets and wall warts, as well as eliminates the need for a dedicated UPS for individual devices.Power over Ethernet or PoE technology describes a system to transmit electrical power, along with data, to remote devices over standard twisted-pair cable in an Ethernet network. This technology is useful for powering IP telephones, wireless LAN access points, network cameras, network hubs, embedded computers, and other appliances where it would be inconvenient, expensive (mains wiring must often be done by qualified and/or licensed electricians for legal or insurance reasons) or infeasible to supply power separately. The technology is somewhat comparable to POTS telephones, which also receive power and data (although analog) through the same cable. It works with an unmodified Ethernet cabling infrastructure. There are several general terms used to describe this feature. The terms Power over Ethernet (PoL), Power over LAN (PoL), and Inline Power are synonymous terms used to describe the powering of attached devices via Ethernet ports.

PoL Power over LAN (PoL). Same as PoE.

QoS Quality of Service: on the Internet and in other networks, QoS is the idea that transmission rates, error rates, and other characteristics can be measured, improved, and, to some extent, guaranteed in advance. QoS is of particular concern for the continuous transmission of high-bandwidth video and multimedia information. Transmitting this kind of content dependably is difficult in public networks using ordinary “best effort” protocols.Using the Internet's Resource Reservation Protocol (see RSVP), packets passing through a gateway host can be expedited based on policy and reservation criteria arranged in advance. Using ATM, which also lets an enterprise or user preselect a level of quality in terms of service, QoS can be measured and guaranteed in terms of the average delay at a gateway, the variation in delay in a group of cells (cells are 53-byte transmission units), cell losses, and the transmission error rate.

RN Release Notes (RNyymm-nnn-r) are documents that are distributed with software products, often when the product is still in the development or test state (e.g., a beta release). For products that have already been in use by clients, the release note is a supplementary document that is delivered to the customer when a bug is fixed or an enhancement is made to the product.Release notes are communication documents shared with dealers of Tadiran detailing the changes or enhancements made to the features of the product the company provides. Thus, this communication document is usually circulated only after the product or feature is thoroughly tested and approved against the specification provided by the development or product management team. Release notes are written by a technical writer after receiving a draft or raw material from the Support Team manager. Release notes can also contain test results and information about the test procedure. This kind of information gives readers of the release note more confidence in the fix/change done. Release notes may also feed the process of end user documentation: NDS, installation manuals, administration guides, user guides, marketing materials, and revisions to training materials.

Router A device that forwards data packets from one local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN) to another. Based on routing tables and routing protocols, routers can read the network address in each transmitted frame and make a decision on how to send it via the most efficient route based on traffic load, line costs, speed, bad connections, etc.Unlike bridges, which logically connect at OSI layer 2, routers provide logical paths at OSI layer 3. Like bridges, remote sites can be connected using routers over dedicated or switched lines to create WANs. Routers are responsible for tracking which networks or segments exist and how they can be reached. The router determines the optimal path along which network traffic should be forwarded.

Routing The process of selecting the most efficient circuit path for a message. The process of finding a path for each packet, to a destination host.

RSVP Resource Reservation Protocol. Protocol that supports the reservation of resources across an IP network. Applications running on IP end systems can use RSVP to indicate to other nodes the nature (bandwidth, jitter, maximum burst, and so forth) of the packet streams they want to receive. RSVP depends on IPv6. Also known as Resource Reservation Setup numbering, time-stamping, and delivery monitoring to real-time applications.

RTC Real Time Clock

RTP Real-time Transport Protocol. A protocol for delivering the media portion of a data transmission over an IP network. “SRTP” (see below) is another media protocol.

RTP/RTCP Real-time Transport Protocol/Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTP / RTCP). IETF specifications for audio and video signal management. Allows applications to synchronize and spool audio and video information.RTP is an Internet protocol standard that specifies a way for programs to manage the real-time transmission of multimedia data over either unicast or multicast network services. RTP supports video conferences with multiple, geographically dispersed participants and is commonly used in Internet telephony applications. RTP does not in itself guarantee real-time delivery of multimedia data (since this is dependent on network characteristics); it does, however, provide the wherewithal to manage the data as it arrives to best effect.RTP combines its data transport with a control protocol (RTCP), which makes it possible to monitor data delivery for large multicast networks. Monitoring allows the receiver to detect if there is any packet loss and to compensate for any delay jitter. Both protocols work independently of the underlying Transport layer and Network layer protocols. Information in the RTP header tells the receiver how to reconstruct the data and describes how the codec bit streams are packetized.

SBC Session Border Controller.Ensuring that enterprise communications are kept as secure as possible is in the best interest of all businesses. As such, many companies deploy session border controllers (SBCs) to serve as gatekeepers of sorts, allowing only authorized communications to infiltrate a business's network.Essentially, an SBC is a piece of hardware or software that acts as an advanced router/voice firewall, choosing which SIP communications received from the public are sent from a carrier or remote SIP telephone are acceptable to bring inside and which communications sent from within a business are fit to go outside. In other words, an SBC lives on the edge of the network and exerts control over which communications can occur. An SBC also blocks denial of services attacks and acts as an overseer of potential SIP toll fraud.

TC Trunk Code

TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. A transport protocol platform that combines both TCP and IP for delivering data over an IP network. Widely used applications, such as Telnet, FTP and SMTP, interface to TCP/IP.The TCP/IP communications protocol was developed under contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to inter-network dissimilar systems. It is a de facto UNIX standard, but is now supported on almost all platforms. TCP/IP is the protocol of the Internet. The underlying technology behind the Internet and communications between computers in a network. The first part, TCP, is the transport part, which matches the size of the messages on either end and guarantees that the correct message has been received. The IP part is the user's computer address on a network. Every computer in a TCP/IP network has its own IP address that is either dynamically assigned at startup or permanently assigned. All TCP/IP messages contain the address of the destination network as well as the address of the destination station. This enables TCP/IP messages to be transmitted to multiple networks (subnets) within an organization or worldwide.

VoIP Voice Over Internet Protocol: set of facilities for managing the delivery of voice information using the Internet Protocol (IP). Voice information is sent in digital form in discrete packets over the Internet instead of in analog form over the public switched telephone network (PSTN).VoIP consists of converting voice signals into streams of digital packets and sending those packets of data through an IP-constructed network environment. VoIP can work in both LAN (local area network) and WAN (wide area network) environments for intranetwork or internetwork communication between VoIP channel users. Routers and switches and other special compression protocols direct the packetized voice data to their destination IP address. VoIP can be less expensive than voice transmission using standard analog packets over POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). It allows telephone calls, faxes, or overhead paging to be transported over an existing IP data network topology.
