The club is believed to have been formed in 1892 as John Smith’s FC. It wasn’t until 1923 that the Tadcaster Albion AFC name was adopted. In the early years the club played in the local York League. In 1948 Albion won the York League. They continued competing in the York League during the 1950’s & 60’s.

Tadcaster Albion, in the early days, played home games on the site of the cricket ground on Station Road, before moving to the Ings ground, near to where the present Samuel Smith Brewery Packaging Block now stands. Changing facilities were in the town, at the rear of the Falcon Public House on Chapel Street, and it was a common Saturday afternoon sight to see nets, corner flags, buckets, oranges, players and officials trekking through the town.

Down the years the club has played in several leagues. In early times, Barkston Ash and later still the Yorkshire and Northern Counties East Leagues.

Football continued on the Ings ground until 1960, when the club moved 100 yards up river to its present home at the Park.

In 1973 the club joined the Yorkshire League Division 3 and were promoted in 1975 & 1977 to reach Division 1, relegation was to follow in 1979 & 1980.

In 1982/83 they became a founding member of the Northern Counties East League, originally in the NCEL Division Two North before league reorganisations led them to Division One in 1991. They rarely finish in the top half of the league in the 1990’s and finished bottom in 2001/02 & 2003/04.

At the start of 2004/05, Jim Collis became manager and at this point fortunes on the pitch started to improve dramatically. In his first season, Albion finished 5th in the league, the following year a 3rd place finish meant promotion was missed by one point.

Jimmy Reid took over as manager in 2006, but his time was blighted by off the field problems. An attempted hostile takeover by dissident commit-tee members took a massive amount of money to fight. Then in Nov 2007, an attempted arson attack on the clubhouse caused a lot of damage.

Paul Marshall took over at the start of 2008/09, in his first season he played mostly local players and the team struggled and finished 17th.

In 2009/10, with an influx of a few new key players, Albion won the NCEL Division One title.

In 2010, Rob Northfield, took over as Chairman of Tadcaster Albion (2010) Ltd, and the club became a company limited by guarantee.

Albion finished fourth in their first season in the NCEL Premier Division and won the NCEL President’s Cup, beating Farsley AFC 5-1 in the final. That was followed by an 8th place finish in 2011/12 and 6th in 2012/13.

In the 2013/14 season Rob Northfield resigned a few days before the start of the season and i2i Sports Ltd agreed to take effective control of the club and company, with Matthew Gore becoming the new Chairman. In 2014/2015 the Brewers lead the NCEL Premier for most of the season, but a poor run of games in March led to them finally finishing in third.

An excellent run in the FA Vase saw them make history by making it through to the Quarter Final of the FA Vase where they drew a record breaking crowd of 1,307, but were narrowly beaten by Highworth Town.

The Brewers also broke many other records throughout the season – taking more than 200 fans away to Armthorpe Welfare on a cold Tuesday night where they went on to win 10-0.

At the end of the season, the club opted not to renew their contract with manager Paul Marshall, and two weeks later former Harrogate Railway boss Billy Miller was unveiled as the club’s new manager.

TAFC Directors’ Notes

A big welcome to tonight’s opponents Bridlington Town who have travelled here to the i2i Stadium for our sixth league game of the season.

Bridlington have started the season strongly and have had some good wins over teams like Staveley Miners Welfare and Handsworth Parramore. Former Taddy striker Lewis Clarkson has started the season very well and has already scored four league goals for the Seasiders. We all know about Lewis’s ability in front of goal, and our defence will be looking to keep a close eye on him.

A big thank you to everyone who came to our FA Cup tie against Colne on Saturday. It was a superb day, though we were disappointed with the result. We thought the lads put in a fantastic performance, but were severely hampered by Jordan’s unfortunate sending off in the 34th minute. Up until this point, it had been a very close and competitive game, but once the second half got underway, Colne gradually began to make their extra man count.

We can take plenty of positives away from the game however. The players are really starting to gel and play as a team, which bodes very well for the rest of the season. Tonight’s game gives us chance to put things right by going top of the league.

This Saturday we travel to Clipstone in Mansfield. Clipstone won the NCEL Division One last season and have started life in the Premier in a similar vein – with three wins, one draw and one defeat – including an excellent away win at Worksop Town.

If you’re interested in travelling to Nottinghamshire to watch Taddy take on the league’s new boys, please contact Emma on 01904 606000. If there is enough interest we will organise a coach. Otherwise we will help to organise car sharing. Enjoy tonight’s game, and thanks as always for your support.

TAFC Manager’s Notes

Good evening everyone and welcome to the i2i for tonight’s NCEL game against Bridlington Town FC. We would like to take the opportunity to welcome the management and players from Bridlington. We hope they enjoy their stay and most importantly have a safe journey back home after the game.

As we reflect on Saturday’s FA Cup exit I think it’s fair to say it’s likely to be a very exciting season if the first half is anything to go by. We showed great commitment and desire to win the game. The biggest disappointment was the loss of Jordan which then spoilt the game for you the supporter. I have had the opportunity to view the incident and stand by my thoughts immediately after the incident. Jordan makes no attempt to move his hand towards the ball. The ball is struck just four yards from him. Anyone with any football knowledge will know he was never getting out of the way. It was a penalty, no one is disputing that, but to then send him off...

Despite the loss we can take a lot out of the performance. We had been the stronger side in the early stages of the game. Although we will never know, I am sure those who witnessed it will agree at 11 vs 11 we had a great chance. The game plan was spot on and we took the game to Colne from the off, which having seen them play was always our intention. The introduction of Tom alongside Jimmy and Liam worked exceptionally well and gave us the bite we needed in the middle of the field. We knew our front three

would create and cause problems, and when they ran out of steam we had exceptional pace on the bench. Squad rotation is healthy and essential now if we are to succeed across what is a very long season. We will continue to utilise every player available to us. It is part of the modern game even at our level. We will be expected to play between 50-60 games and to think one person can get through that many games would be an underestimation on my behalf. We will try to keep the players fresh and pick the appropriate players for the appropriate game plan.

Tonight’s game, if you include pre season, is our 15th game of a very short season already. Eleven of those games have been played at home on what is surely one of the best playing surfaces at this level. Everyone involved behind the scenes deserves a lot of credit; the ground staff, the bar staff and indeed the catering staff for a fantastic effort in supporting the team on the pitch. Every little bit of effort is very much appreciated and helps to provide the backbone to success. We have fantastic support from the directors and hope to be able to reward that support across the season.

Finally again I am sure I will say this time and time again, thank you for your support. Stay loud, stay vocal it makes a really big difference to what we do! Yours in Sport, Billy #tadallover

TAFC Match Preview

Tonight, we welcome the fans, players and officials of Bridlington Town. Last season, the match at Tadcaster in January was a 1-1 draw with The Brewers goal coming from Danny Gray who had recently joined the club from Selby Town. The attendance that day was 527. Bridlington Town were to end their NCEL Premier campaign last season in 8th place. They have had five top four finishes in the last seven seasons in the NCEL Premier.

The Seasiders have taken 9 points from their 6 games played so far this season, this includes 2 wins on the road at Staveley Miners Welfare and Thackley. Their other points were from a home win against Handsworth Parramore. They went out of the F.A Cup

at the first attempt as the went down 2-0 at home to North Shields. At the weekend, Bridlington Town were beaten 3-1 at home by Nostell Miners Welfare. Former Brewers striker Lewis Clarkson has scored 4 times in the league so far this season to be in joint 2nd place in the goalscorers chart with a number of others including Josh Greening. The NCEL Premier leading goalscorer currently is Garforth Town’s Mark Simpson with 6 goals. The Seasiders are currently in 8th place in the table. A home win this evening will put Tadcaster back on top of the table and as we look to bounce back from our disappointment at the week, I will go for a 2-1 home victory.

Formed as Bridlington Centrals shortly after the end of the First World war, the club initially competed in the Driffield & District League progressing to the East Riding Amateur league, winning five successive championships and the East Riding Senior Cup.

Promotion to the First Division and progress to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, for the first time, was achieved in their first season. Another FA Cup tie, against local rivals Scarborough, attracted a record attendance of 2,102 to Queensgate.

Success in the Yorkshire League followed with runners up on a number of occasions, three League Cups and the ERCFA Senior Cup again. Town were placed in Division 2 (North) of the newly formed Northern Counties League (East). In 1986, following the resignation of a number of clubs, Town competed in the Premier Division.

The 1988-89 season saw Town finish 3rd, win the League Cup and the ERCFA Senior Cup for the 7th time. 1990 saw Town’s first ever FA Vase Final appearance at Wembley, eventually going down 1-0 to Yeading in a replay at Elland Road. Promotion to the Premier Division of the Northern League followed and a return to Wembley in 1993 saw an Alan Radford goal secure the Vase with a win over Tiverton.

New Chairman Ken Richardson was the catalyst for Town’s success and was behind the building of a new Clubhouse and Stand and the installation of floodlights, providing the club with some of the finest facilities in the league.

Somehow, within 12 months of the Wembley triumph, it all went wrong and the club withdrew from senior football.

During the summer of 1994, local ‘pub’ side the ‘Greyhound’ approached the club to play their home games at Queensgate.

Agreement was reached for the side to play as Bridlington Town AFC. A new club crest was designed, it’s motto of ‘Pergrere et Eniti’ meaning ‘Onwards and Upwards.’

The 1994-95 season saw Town back in the Driffield & District League. Success on the field saw the club progress back to the NCEL Premier Division; the NCEL Wilkinson Sword Trophy was won in 2002, the Premier League Championship in 2003 and a return to Unibond football followed. League restruc-turing saw Town promoted to the Premier Division. Perhaps a step too far, too early? Town were relegated back to Division One.

New owner and chairman, Peter Smurthwaite, was fighting a losing battle to overcome huge debts left by previous regimes and put the club up for sale.

A return to NCEL football looked likely if Town were to have a team at all! Town die-hards rallied round to form a supporter’s trust to provide crucial financial input and run the club alongside the chairman.

A low key build up to the 2006-07 season, the loss of several key players to injury and work commitments saw Town win only three out of 46 games. Various management and player personnel changes gave some hope but it turned out to be a false dawn. Uni-bond status was saved only by close-season restructuring of the league. Hope that more close-season signings would re-establish Town in mid-table was just that...hope! The Chairman’s promise to back up an impressive looking squad with an increased wage budget saw limited progress.

The management team of Ashley Berry and Paul Stoneman was relieved of their posts after exactly one year in charge, following

another defeat on New Years’ Day 2008. Despite a brief second half of the season rally Town limped to the finish line in rock-bottom place and relegation to Step 5 of the pyramid.

For the current NCEL campaign, chairman Peter Smurthwaite had recruited an experienced and accomplished manage-ment duo fronted by ex. Hull City and North Ferriby man Tim Hotte and Gary Allanson, who can name Doncaster Rovers amongst his previous clubs.

They brought in a core of young, hungry and talented players who looked more than capable of bringing further success to the club the club finished 4th position in the league and lost to UniBond Premier side North Ferriby in the East Riding senior cup final at the KC Stadium and within days the Management team had resigned from the club due to personal reasons. But within days and to the delight of the Town supporters Gary Allanson had a change of heart and was back in the hot seat appointing club Captain Phil Harrison as his assistant they proved to be an instant success as Town went on to win the league by 11 points scoring 123 goals on the way.

The following season and Town finished in a respectable third place but the Town faithful were to suffer a major blow with news that popular Manager Gary Allanson was to step down at the end of the season and it was Gary’s recommendation that Mitch Cook would be the ideal candidate to replace him as the Bridlington Town manager and Mitch was delighted to take on the job, in Cook’s first season Town finished runners up to Retford missing out on the title by one point but were successful in the East riding cup beating Hall Road reserves 9-2 in the cup final at the KC Stadium in Hull.

2012/13 and Town had another good season under Mitch Cook finishing in third place with a massive 95 points and scoring 137 league goals along the way, this was to be Cook’s last season in charge as he announced he would have to stand down due to work commitments and within days of his announcement he was replaced by former Manager Gary Allanson.

2014/15 East Riding Senior Cup Winners. Gary and his coaching staff will continue their good work next season.

The story continues.

With one team leaving and another joining the Northern Counties East Football League (NCEL), membership remained at 36 clubs for the 2001/02 season.

Ossett Albion had been promoted to the Northern Premier League, despite finishing the 2000/01 season behind champions Brigg Town. Meanwhile, Lincoln Moorlands became new members of the NCEL, having moved up from the Central Midlands League.

At the end of the 2000/01 season, Staveley Miners Welfare were relegated to Division One, with Borrowash Victoria and Pickering Town moving in the opposite direction to the Premier Division.

The Brewers enjoyed a slightly improved season, finishing 13th in the 16 team Division One, with 30 points from their 30 games.

The season started well with a 4-3 away win at Hall Road Rangers but three defeats followed before the next league victory - 4-2 at Maltby Main.

A further three losses came for Albion before a 2-1 win against Mickleover Sports. The pattern continued when the Brewers went three more games without a victory, until they completed the double over Rossington Main (2-0 at home and 2-1 away) in consecutive weeks.

Then came the worst run of the season - four consecutive defeats - including a 0-2 loss at tonight’s opponents Bridlington Town. That sequence came to an end with a 4-2 win at Hatfield Main.

In March, a three game unbeaten run was achieved by the Brewers, which included a pair of draws against 15th placed Staveley Miners Welfare and a 2-1 win at 14th placed Parkgate.

The run was brought to an end with 0-3 home defeat against Bridlington Town, which was the first of seven consecutive home games to finish the season. Other results in those final games included a 2-0 win over bottom club Pontefract Collieries, a 3-1 victory against Louth United and a narrow 0-1 loss to champions Gedling Town.

In the FA Cup preliminary round, Albion lost 1-5 at Ossett Town, who would go on to finish second in Division One of the Northern Premier League but miss out on promotion due to ground

improvements being completed 12 hours late!

Despite completing the league double over Rossington Main, they did end hopes of success in the League Cup, with a 6-4 home win.

Mid-table NCEL Division One club Hatfield Main beat the Brewers 3-2 in the FA Vase second round qualifying.

Goole AFC, who finished mid-table in the NCEL Premier Division, won 2-1 against Albion in the West Riding County Cup.

In the Wilkinson Sword Trophy, the Brewers reached the last four, with a 3-2 win at Parkgate and a 3-0 victory over Rossington Main. In the semi final, they lost 0-5 at Bridlington Town.

The second XI finished 12th out of 16 clubs in the Reserve Division, with 37 points from 30 games.

The Brewers’ reserves enjoyed a few sizeable wins - 7-1 at Ossett Albion and 4-1 against both Selby Town and Pontefract Collieries. The heaviest defeat was 0-5 at third placed Thackley.

In the Reserve Team Cup, Albion lost 1-2 to Harrogate Railway.

Tonight’s opposition, Bridlington Town, finished second in NCEL Division One, just four points behind champions Gedling Town, who they beat 4-1 on the opening day.

They lost five of the opening nine games but, after being beaten 2-5 at Gedling Town in December, picking up 45 points from a possible 51 until the end of the season - 14 wins and three draws.

They won the Wilkinson Sword Trophy 10-0 on aggregate against Lincoln Moorlands, having scored 28 goals in five games in the competition.

Bridlington Town lost on the away goals rule, to Premier Division champions Alfreton Town, in the final of the President’s Cup. They beat Premier Division clubs Selby Town and Goole AFC, as well as Division One champions Gedling Town, on the way to the final.

They also reached the East Riding Senior Cup final but lost 0-2 to North Ferriby United at the soon to be closed Boothferry Park.

A great season for the Seasiders!

Our U21s play in the West Riding County FA Floodlit League (Central). During the 2014/15 season, they also made it to the Semi Final of the West Riding Floodlit League Cup. The players, who are aged 16 and over, train between 1 and 10 hours a week and also compete in regular development friendlies. Many of these friendlies are against youth teams from local professional clubs such as Leeds United and York City – giving each of our players a unique insight into the UK’s football system. Our U21 coaches Mike Mor-ton and Simon Collins not only have their FA Level 3 (UEFA B) qualification, but they also have experience of coaching with professional clubs such as Man-chester City and Leeds United. For more information on our U21 set up, please email [email protected].

Our Under 19 team is a newly formed side, which has been set up to help local talented players develop and hopefully progress into the Under 21s and the Tadcaster Albion first team. Players are all aged 16 and over. Coach Rich Taylor has coached in the USA and has also had a spell at Leeds United.

For more information on our U19 set up, please email [email protected].
