The public is invited to review and comment on the plan through April 29. Starting this year, the Residential Yard Sampling and Cleanup Program will provide soil sampling within the service area, and clean up homeowners' yards that have levels of arsenic at or more than 100 parts per million (ppm) or lead at or more than 500 ppm. The Yard Program service area covers three re- gions: the one-square-mile Ruston/North Tacoma Study Area (Superfund site); about 3,900 homes in west Tacoma outside the Superfund site; and more than 700 homes on southern Vashon-Maury Island. The Department of Ecology is using funding from a $94.6 million bankruptcy settlement with Asarco to sample 4,600 yards and clean up the 1,200 that may qualify for cleanup. This is a voluntary pro- gram, so some homeowners may choose not to par- ticipate. More than half of the cleanups will happen inside the Superfund site. Over the past 20 years, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) oversaw the Superfund cleanup of yards with 230 ppm ar- senic or higher. Ecology will now offer cleanup for about 700 yards that did not qualify for EPA's pro- gram. "Our first cleanups will happen inside the Su- perfund site because we already have EPA's soil sampling data for those yards," said Department of Ecology cleanup manager Amy Hargrove. "This area still has some of the highest arsenic levels we know of, making cleanup a high priority." According to staff, the port currently has 27 straddle carriers in its fleet, including eight that are more than 20 years old. The new straddle carriers the port plans to purchase are manufactured by Kalmar and consistent with the Port's existing fleet. The new equipment will replace four straddle carriers that are at the end of their lifecycle and one that was dam- aged in an accident. The new equipment would arrive at the port by the end of this year. The Port of Tacoma Commission is scheduled Thursday to vote on whether to direct staff to be- gin negotiations with Cargotec for the purchase of the equipment. In addition, commissioners will also consider design work for a stormwater treatment system at the West Hylebos log yard, and receive a progress report on developing a Land Use and Transportation Plan to support the port's 2012-2022 Strategic Plan. Volunteers are the backbone of FISH Food BanksLast year, FISH volunteers contributed 46,405 hours. This is an equivalent of
nearly 23 full time employees. If FISH had to pay for these hours at a minimum wageof $7.16 it would have cost $332,260.
The FISH volunteers sent food home for more than 186,000 individuals last yearand deserve a hugh THANK YOU from the Board of Directors, staff andcommunity.The families needing food can now concentrate on other aspects of theirlives such as finding a job or getting training without the pains of hunger. State Sales Tax—Rule 170 - Group 2The Contractor shall collect from the
Contracting Agency, retail sales tax on the full contract price. The Contracting Agency will automatically add this sales tax to each payment to the Con- tractor. For this reason, the Contrac- tor shall not include the retail sales tax in the unit Bid Item prices, or in any other contract amount subject to Rule 170, with the following exception. Ex- ception: The Contracting Agency will not add in sales tax for a payment the Contractor or a subcontractor makes on the purchase or rental of tools, ma- chinery, equipment, or consumable supplies not integrated into the pro- ject. Description of Work:This contract provides for the im-
provement of approximately 1.2 miles of 176th Street East from B Street
East to 14th Avenue East. This work includes, but is not limited to, clearing and grubbing, roadway excavation and embankment compaction, pond exca- vation and embankment, hot mix as- phalt, cement concrete traffic curb and gutter, cement concrete side- walks, pervious concrete sidewalks, pervious concrete shoulders, storm drainage system and treatment facil- ities, il lumination, traffic signal systems, raised median, sanitary sew- er manhole reconstruction, and other work in accordance with and as de- scribed in the Plans and Specifica- tions.
