The Arts Centre Gold Coast Annual Review 2009-10 7

Background

The Arts Centre Gold Coast was first envisaged in 1968 when a group of like-minded Gold Coast area citizens actively promoted the need for a first-class theatre and gallery complex for entertainment and the arts on the Gold Coast. This group was later registered in 1971 as the Cultural Centre Association and known as the Community Arts Centre Association (C.A.C.A).

By April 1969 this group secured the Gold Coast City Council’s support for the development of an arts centre on Evandale Park next to Gold Coast City Council Chambers. The Centre opened in 1986 and was called ‘The Keith Hunt Community Entertainment and Arts Centre.’ The Centre was run directly by Council via a sub-committee.

In 1993, a Board of Management was established and the Gold Coast City Council changed the name from The Keith Hunt Community Entertainment and Arts Centre to the Gold Coast Arts Centre Proprietary Limited as a separate legal entity. During this time the entertainment program was expanded, the city’s first Arts Cinema was created, foyer space was increased, with a new bar area, the Arts Café was constructed and a new lobby retail shop opened.

In March 2010, the Gold Coast Arts Centre was renamed, rebranded, refurbished and relaunched as The Arts Centre Gold Coast, as part of an ongoing change in strategic direction. The Arts Centre Gold Coast (TACGC) is a registered trading name of Gold Coast Arts Centre Pty Ltd.

Alan Hayes B.Des.St, B.Arch. (Hons)Board Director - Appointed to the Board in 2009

After graduating from the University of Queensland in 1979, Alan practised architecture on the Gold Coast for 18 months, specialising in fast-track documentation, before taking up the A.E. Brookes Travelling Scholarship which was awarded on graduation. This enabled a 12-month stay in Europe during which he worked with The Halpern Partnership in London. On his return to the Gold Coast he joined Silver Goldberg Hamilton and gained further fast-track experience working on the Paradise Centre. At the time, this was the largest urban development project in Australia and required special enabling legislation passed by the State Government.

By completion of this project Alan had become an Associate and then Director of the company, which duly then changed the company name to Hamilton Hayes Henderson Architects. The firm celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2008 and continues to shape our built environment. Alan strongly believes that good design shapes our attitudes, both individually and collectively, and that The Arts Centre has a pivotal role in increasing design awareness on the Gold Coast.

Chairman’s Report

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our very first public report for The Arts Centre Gold Coast. This report is another new initiative in what can only be described as a year full of new initiatives and change. The start of the financial year began with the departure of long time General Manager Kelvin Cordell who after 23 years of outstanding service decided to take the time to finally enjoy the Gold Coast lifestyle that most busy senior managers do not get the chance to do. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding legacy that Kelvin created during his tenure.

The appointment of a new General Manager quickly became the top priority of the Board and following a national recruitment campaign the Board appointed Destry Puia as its new General Manager. Since this time the Board has worked closely with the General Manager in creating a new vision for The Arts Centre Gold Coast. Underlying this vision has been a commitment to ensuring that the arts play a meaningful and ongoing role in the lives of our community now and in the future.

Implementing a new organisational structure ensured that the company was adequately prepared to tackle a very ambitious year ahead. Rebranding of the organisation from Gold Coast Arts Centre to The Arts Centre Gold Coast marked not only a change in the marketing of the company but also signalled a change in artistic direction as we sought to play a greater leadership role in the development of Gold Coast artists. State of the art technical upgrades to the Arts Theatre as well as extensive refurbishments to the foyer were completed to further enhance the theatre-going experience for our audience.

From a financial perspective, the company improved its performance from the previous year while almost tripling its live theatre attendances, as illustrated in the graphs showing event and audience trends. The company also worked hard to strengthen relationships with our key stakeholders. A renewed commitment between Gold Coast City Council and The Arts Centre Gold Coast to work together collaboratively resulted in stronger governance and reporting structures, improved asset maintenance prioritisation and a greater level of shared planning for future capital developments. In this regard, I would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Gold Coast City Council who continues to be the main funding source for the company’s activities and operations. In particular I would like to thank Steve Bowden, Coordinator Business Support and Geoffrey Bolster, Manager Facilities Management who are the main Council contact officers for the company. Their guidance has been invaluable in ensuring that the objectives of the company and those of Council continue to reflect the needs and aspirations of the community.

Our Benefactors both new and existing have once again proven that the Gold Coast community not only values the arts but is prepared to financially support creativity through philanthropy. Their ongoing support makes many of our arts development initiatives possible as does the efforts of our wonderful volunteers who throughout the year have given their time generously.

The Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast have continued to be the greatest community advocates for the organisation and arts on the Gold Coast in general. I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the Friends committee and in particular the outstanding efforts of former President Paul Fitzgerald for ensuring that the Friends continue to be a significant part of the team here at The Arts Centre Gold Coast. I also offer congratulations to incoming President Wendy Spencer and wish her the very best for the coming year ahead.

The company is fortunate to have a diverse array of skills at the Board level and I would like to thank my fellow Board Directors all of whom contribute significant time, not only to the Board but also serve on numerous subcommittees, working parties and advisory roles throughout the year. I would like to thank our amazing team of volunteers who all give their time freely simply to make the arts more accessible to our community. Their commitment and dedication week in and week out is invaluable and I extend my thanks to each and every one of them.

Finally, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of The Arts Centre Gold Coast staff lead by our General Manager Destry Puia. Every single member of the team has been a vital contributor to the success of the company over the last year and all continue to work tirelessly to deliver outstanding services to our community.

do is worthy of recognition and appreciation. To the Board of Directors and in particular the Chairman Kerry Watson, thank you for your guidance and support throughout the year. General Manager’s Report

General Manager’s Report General Manager’s Report

In October 2009 I was fortunate enough to be appointed General Manager. Since then the company has focused on increasing its reputation as one of Australia’s leading arts organisations by presenting high quality international and Australian works. Our leadership role was reflected in the number of new artist development initiatives launched throughout the year while a greater diversity in programming enabled us to increase audiences to cultural events. Renewed efforts to better engage with the community led to the rebranding of the company into The Arts Centre Gold Coast. New collateral, e-marketing initiatives and new team uniforms all supported the objective of generating renewed interest in the company.

Throughout the year 505,420 people attended events held at the Centre, representing an increase of 92,573 or 22%. The single largest growth area was in The Arts Centre Presents series which are those performances that the company presents as part of our artistic program. Attendance in this area grew by 184% (44,348) from 24,083 in the previous year to 68,431.

A return sell-out season of Menopause the Musical; performances by world-renowned pianist David Helfgott; Parisian cabaret artist Caroline Nin; The Imperial Russian Ballet and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra contributed to the strength of the year’s main stage program. Our Live in The Basement series extended its offerings with the introduction of the Live and Intimate cabaret series; Life Changing Documentaries and Indie Film Nights to complement the Unplugged, Comedy and Jazz programs.

At a local level the company was able to provide new investment and support into the development of our local arts companies as a result of new funding from Arts Queensland and the Australia Council. The conversion of the former Harlequin rehearsal room into a new 100 seat black box theatre called The Space provided not only another much needed performance venue but also and more importantly, a new accessible artistic playground for local arts organisations and The Arts Centre to explore, create and deliver exciting experiences to new audiences through new artistic partnerships.

The cinema continued to prove popular with 128,549 people viewing the best national and international art house movies shown on the Gold Coast including the Academy Award -winning The Hurt Locker, Mao’s Last Dancer, Bran Nue Dae and The Last Station.

Gold Coast City Gallery presented 61 different exhibitions and programs attracting 42,298 attendances. Highlights included the Kuru Alala, Eyes Open in partnership with Tjanpi weavers. This exhibition toured nationally as a result of receiving the largest ever grant from Vision of Australia. The Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize attracted strong attendances aided by the usual controversial media attention that accompanies this prize. The Gallery also delivered a five week program of Summer Sunday Sessions with some of the best emerging Gold Coast musicians performing in the Gallery as part of Gold Coast City Council’s A-Venue music program.

The Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award and Flying Colours again proved popular while Queensland College of Art celebrated 10 years of Gold Coast Alumni with their launch as well as a day of family activities around the theme of Photography. The year ended with the Bursting at the Seams exhibition which showcased the recent acquisitions from the City’s collection and in particular some of the vast amount of artworks donated to the collection from Pat and Barbara Corrigan and Win Schubert.

From a commercial perspective, earned income for the company grew by $388,422 or 6% to $6,696,126. Strong income growth occurred in most areas with the exception being food and beverage which experienced a decline largely as a result of business interruptions during building upgrade works as well as an increase in non-food and beverage business meetings and seminars. The growth in commercial income mixed with greater control on expenditure meant that the company was able to direct more funds into artistic areas resulting in the Centre delivering an additional 399 events (an increase of 7%) for the year, totalling 5,793 with The Arts Centre Presents series and arts programs by other arts companies, community groups and promoters representing the largest area of increase being 217 or 54%.

Extensive building refurbishments breathed new life into the venue while at the same time improving services to customers. The relocation of the box office proved to be an instant success while new digital signage, foyer refurbishment and cafe upgrades became the tangible evidence of a transformed organisation. The back stage areas also enjoyed much needed attention with significant technical upgrades occurring in the theatre ensuring that artists and groups who use the Arts Theatre have access to state of the art digital audio and lighting equipment.

But companies such as The Arts Centre Gold Coast are more than bricks and mortar. It is the people who work tirelessly day after day within the company who ensure that what we

Student Ambassador Program

To complement the Youth Theatre Program, the Centre sought to further develop relationships with secondary school students through the introduction of a Student Ambassador Program. This program targets year 11 and 12 students residing on the Gold Coast region wanting to become involved with the performing arts but not necessarily as a performer. There is a limit of twenty Student Ambassadors per year. Two volunteer Ambassador Liaison Officers are appointed to assist with the implementation of the program. In 2010, the Centre registered fifteen Student Ambassadors.

Schools represented in 2010 include:

• The Southport School• St Hilda’s College• All Saints Anglican School• Helensvale State High School• Trinity Lutheran College• Miami High School• Coomabah State High School• Benowa State High School• Bond University• A.B. Paterson College

Benefits given to Student Ambassadors include:

• A personalised “Ambassador of The Arts Centre Gold Coast” badge• A tour of the backstage area of the main theatre• Free entry to preview and opening night performances held in The Space for the Ambassador and their parent/guardian• Free entry to nominated performances in The Arts theatre and Paradise Showroom for the ambassador and their parent/guardian• Group discounts to selected shows for fellow students, family and friends• Free attendance at workshops and master classes conducted by the Artist in Residence and other Regional

Stages artists

• The opportunity to meet the creative and production teams for events in The Space

In return, Ambassadors:

• Canvas support for and attendance at The Space events by fellow students, family and friends• Make regular submissions about The Arts Centre Gold Coast in their school newsletter• Make regular positive and supportive comments on social networking sites• Provide the Centre with personal feedback about the works being staged at the Centre by keeping a journal and attending regular Ambassador meetings • Advertise the Centre’s productions by creating a display area at their school and providing the Centre with evidence of the display.

Fill This Space

Fill This Space is an initiative supporting the presentation of new and contemporary works by Gold Coast independent theatre makers. Three opportunities are made available annually and support for each successful project includes:

• Up to $1,000 of development funding per company• A maximum of up to two weeks in-kind access to The Space for rehearsals and performances• A designated in-kind value for marketing and technical support of up to $2,600• Professional development opportunities• 70/30 split of net income

Successful applicants are required to present a season in The Space of three to six performances, including a non-ticketed preview for guests of the Centre and the company/artist. The main body of the rehearsals takes place off-site and the company is responsible for all sets, props and costumes as well as the creative and production team. Several applications were received following the first call for expressions of interest, with performances of Beautifully Dead in conjunction with Awkward Productions being chosen for the first Fill This Space in September 2010.

Supporting Local Arts Development

In March 2010 The Arts Centre Gold Coast launched its Regional Stages Project which was made possible through funding from Arts Queensland and the Australia Council. Through this initiative, programs were developed to promote The Arts Centre Gold Coast as an accessible venue for Gold Coast artists, performers and audiences alike. Particular emphasis is on targeting new programming initiatives aimed at sections of the community which historically were not catered for within previous programming activities and which:

• Assist in the development of innovative new work across a range of performance art forms• Provide professional development opportunities for Gold Coast artists and arts workers• Encourage the development and staging of works for and involving youth

The 2010 program consists of five main elements:

1. Youth Theatre Project2. Student Ambassador Program3. Fill This Space4. Artist in Residence5. Ignition

Summer School 2009/10Artist in Residence

2009/10 Summer SchoolArtist in Residence

The Artist in Residence Program enables one performing arts individual or organisation residing in the Gold Coast region to take up residence at The Arts Centre Gold Coast for 7-10 months. It is acknowledged that artists are accomplished at creating new works but often suffer from the lack the business mentoring and arts industry support needed to help a regional arts organisation develop into a major artistic company.

Through this program, the Artist in Residence gains access to financial and resource support, professional business mentoring and industry advice. The Artist in Residence has access to space for rehearsals and performances as well as funding support for the creation of a new work to be offered for regional and interstate touring.

Following an application process, Zealous Choreography was nominated as the 2010 Artist in Residence. Founded by Ben Veitch, its Creative Director, Zealous Choreography strives to push the boundaries of dance with innovative choreography reflecting honesty and beauty. The Arts Centre Gold Coast provided Ben with office space and initiated a series of mentoring opportunities including:

• A series of one-on-one business development mentoring sessions with Auspicious Arts• Attendance at the So You Wanna Seminars• Attendance at the Queensland Showcase and Long Paddock• Assistance with grant applications• Assistance with a submission to Artour• Working with Gael Ballantyne, a Gold Coast based drama teacher, performer, director and writer to bring structure and creativity to the performance project• Assistance with the development, technical and marketing aspects of a major work

The Arts Centre Gold Coast will produce and stage Ben’s first major work for theatre Blood Sweat and Dance in a three-performance season in March 2011. An application for inclusion in the Queensland Showcase 2011 has been submitted. The production will also be offered for 2012 touring through Long Paddock, a twice yearly event supported by the Australian Government under its Playing Australia funding program that brings together presenters and producers from all around Australia to generate national tours.

Blood, Sweat and Dance promotional image

The 12th annual Arts Centre Gold Coast Performing Arts Summer School for 2009/2010 was an energetic production of High School Musical 2, based on a Disney channel original movie. Directed by Anthony Crowley, the performance season of High School Musical 2, took place in The Arts Centre’s main theatre from 21 to 30 January 2010. Featuring the talent and exuberance that made the first production a sell-out success, High School Musical 2 featured more of the laughter, romance, intrigue, dance sequences and show-stopping musical numbers audiences loved in 2008/09.

A theatre-based summer school for aspiring young talent was established at The Arts Centre Gold Coast in 1998 to further develop education in the performing arts. During professional tuition, students are given a unique opportunity not only to perfect their performance skills but also to acquire practical knowledge in many aspects of performing arts, including sound and lighting, marketing, choreography, financial budgeting, make-up and costumes. As well, students develop leadership and communication skills in what many describe as a ‘life-changing’ experience.

The Centre’s annual Summer School offers young people living on the Gold Coast a unique opportunity of performing live on stage before an audience. Since inception 12 years ago, around 500 young people have experienced the thrill of professional training and participating in a real-life production and the program has now become a Gold Coast icon, loved and enjoyed by families and the whole community. Our heartfelt thanks go to the many Benefactors, donors and sponsors who loyally support this event and help us make it possible.

Gold Coast City Gallery

Gold Coast City Gallery

During the year, renovations to the foyer and gallery spaces, replacement of the ten-year old carpet in Gallery 1 and polished concrete in Gallery 2, now offers our patrons a fresh and attractive gallery experience.

Key achievements in 2009 - 2010 include:

Initiating and developing exhibitions of national importance

• Michael Zavros: The Good Son Works on Paper presented the work of Gold Coast born artist Michael Zavros. Support from the Arts Queensland’s Regional Art Development Fund and Bond University enabled a ten-minute documentary film to be made about the artist and his process. The film was directed by local filmmaker Alex Chomicz. A catalogue and poster were produced and a major work by the artist was acquired for the collection.

• Kuru Alala Eyes Open - Tjanpi Desert Weavers, Maria Fernanda Cardoso and Alison Clouston. This ground-breaking exhibition was developed in partnership between indigenous fibre collective Tjanpi Desert Weavers with the support of the Balnaves Foundation. Over 90 indigenous artists from the western desert participated in a two-year project to make a large-scale sculptural work based on stories of country and spirit. The exhibition received the largest ever grant from Visions of Australia and will tour four states to the end of 2012. Nine artists from the western desert visited the Gold Coast to install the exhibition and to participate in a public opening and workshops. A catalogue and video were produced.

• Ian Smith - On and Off the Road. An exhibition of works by senior Queensland artist Ian Smith reflecting a ten-year body of work based the artist’s experience of road travel, distance and separation from family. The Gallery received a grant from Arts Queensland to support the presentation of the exhibition and to produce a short film which was short-listed for Best Queensland Short Film 2010. The exhibition will tour six venues throughout Queensland in early 2011.

Mentoring local artists and displaying their work

With the renovation of the foyer gallery, Gold Coast City Gallery now offers a regular program of solo exhibitions by local artists. Gold Coast artists have also featured in group exhibitions in the main gallery spaces. These exhibitions present significant professional development and exposure opportunities for artists, with catalogues produced and works of art being sold. Hosting public events also allows direct engagement with the community and media exposure.

Local artists featured in 2009 - 2010 were;

• Susan Simonini• Hobbie Porter• Dave Groom • Hazel Cope • Stephen Baxter• Queensland College of Art Gold Coast Graduates • 320 Local artists exhibiting in the Border Art Prize • Carole King• Caroline Cleak• Flying Colours Exhibition featuring the work of six artists who have all graduated from QCA Gold Coast and who have now developed national reputations• Stephanie Laine • 46 senior students from Gold Coast high schools

Presenting works from the collection in new ways

With so much of the Gold Coast Gallery Collection in storage, presenting regular exhibitions that display selections of this work in engaging ways is important. Exhibitions based on the collection in 2009 - 10 include;

• Colour Texture Form: An exhibition of diverse objects from the collection brought together to by virtue of their bold use of colour, dramatic texture or striking form. This exhibition will go on tour in regional Queensland in 2011.

• Bursting at the Seams: Our collection continues to grow especially with the support of key local philanthropists Mrs Win Schubert and Pat and Barbara Corrigan. This exhibition displayed some of these recently acquired works and demonstrated the need to expand our collection storage.

• Works in Gold Coast City Gallery collection are available for loan upon request to public gallery institutions. In 2009/10 loans included Gordon Bennett Terra Nullius to the National Gallery of Victoria and Queensland Art Gallery and other works to Artspace MacKay, Lake Macquarie Regional Gallery, Hazlehurst Regional Gallery and Redcliffe Art Gallery.

• Over 400 works from the collection are currently on loan to Gold Coast City Council Offices and Public Library Service.

Offering engaging art experiences for the community

The Gallery presented a wide range of engaging public programs and activities for the community ranging from children’s education days to seminars and master classes.

• Art Unpacked: Land and Place an Education Kit for Australian Schools, based on works in the Collection. This resource kit was developed to give schools and teachers a high-quality teaching resource directly linking works in the collection to the curriculum. Support from The Australia Council, The George Alexander Foundation and Arts Queensland enabled the resource to be distributed free to Gold Coast schools and, for a small fee, to schools outside the area.

• Energies Immersion Day: High school students selected for the annual Energies Exhibition were invited to participate in a full-day immersion program with two established local artists. Presented with the support of Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Gold Coast.

• Four free family Art Activity days were presented in association with the following exhibitions: Michael Zavros; Ian Smith the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award and the Stan and Maureen Duke Gold Coast Art Prize. Activities were designed and presented by gallery staff and visitors were invited to participate and create their own artworks.

• A free seminar, Art in the Hospital Environment, was presented in collaboration with Gold Coast Hospital to coincide with the Hazel Cope exhibition and the development of a public art policy for Gold Coast Hospital. Over 100 people attended this seminar which looked at best practice models and evidence for high quality artworks in medical environments.

• In Conversation with Mangroves: by local artist Carole King. For the opening, the Gallery organised an illuminating dialogue about mangroves and their importance to the environment between the artist and Professor Rod Connelly Deputy Head, Griffith School of Environment and the Australian Rivers Institute - Coast & Estuaries Gold Coast campus, Griffith University

• On the occasion of the opening of the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, the Gallery hosted a series of talks to respond to the new legal regulations regarding the photography of children.

• Four local musicians who are part of the Gold Coast City Council’s A-Venue Music Program were presented in a series of Sunday afternoon summer sessions in the Gallery.

• The Gallery regularly hosts talks for the following community groups - TAFE ESL; Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation; Respite Care; Australian Decorative and Fine Arts Society, Gold Coast; and a number of Aged Care groups.

• The Gallery maintains close cultural collaborative connections with Queensland College of Art Gold Coast; The Gold Coast City Council Cultural Development Unit; Arts Queensland; Museum and Gallery Services Queensland and Bond University.

Developing the collection in accordance with established policy

• 145 works were acquired in the Financial Year period 2009-10 (these are listed under Acquisitions). Significant purchases included Michael Zavros Debaser Dior 2009 and a group of small paintings by Peter O’Doherty depicting the contemporary Gold Coast landscape.

• The Federal Government’s Cultural Gifts Program is an important source of artwork donations to the City Gallery. In 2009-10, major groups of works were donated by local philanthropists Pat and Barbara Corrigan and Win Schubert. Other artists have also made direct gifts to the Gallery through the Cultural Gifts Program, including works by indigenous artists Denis Nona and Freddie Timms as well as important works by Rick Amor, Jason Benjamin, Nick Howson, Michael Johnson, Alan Jones, Anwen Keeling, Angus McDonald, Maeve Woods and significant collections of photographs by Shane Fitzgerald and Greg Weight.

Managing the City Collection

Gallery staff and The Arts Centre Board worked closely with Gold Coast City Council staff to review existing storage, staff accommodation and access issues. Plans for a two-level gallery extension featuring a disabled access lift on the western façade of the building were drawn up. However, this project did not proceed because of cost and logistical issues relating to disabled access. New staff accommodation opportunities were identified within the existing building and these offices were renovated. Arts Centre staff are now working on alternative storage development options.
