MT. VERNON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL TABLET PROGRAM We believe that the use of the KUNO 4 tablets and access to available technology, integrated throughout our Freshman Academy, will help prepare students for their future. The use of technology will allow our students to collect, analyze, consider, and communicate ideas and information from an enormous pool of available resources. Through effective planning, our staff will guide students in the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of this vast store of data and help them apply it to complex and practical real-world problems in the classroom. Through the use of the KUNO 4 tablets, the teaching and learning process will change over time with students assuming more responsibility for their learning and teachers becoming coaches in the classroom rather than dispensers of knowledge. Establishing this new environment for learning requires careful planning and consideration as well as the application of effective policies and procedures. In many ways this program will demand an increased level of responsibility on the part of all students, parents and school staff. This policy manual is intended to provide the critical information and infrastructure necessary to insure the KUNO 4 tablet program’s success. Since this is a new and complex project, the policies and procedures covered in this document are not “all inclusive” and will evolve over time. All Mt. Vernon Township High School freshman students will have the opportunity to earn a license for a KUNO 4 Tablet during the 2013-14 school year. To earn a “KUNO license” students will need to:

- complete required instruction - demonstrate understanding of use and care of hardware, etc. - present required paperwork with necessary signatures - secure “KUNO” license from Academy Principal

Once the above is completed, a KUNO 4 tablet will be checked out and registered to a student. Students and parents will be required to sign a computer protection agreement as well as a pledge for the use of the KUNO 4 devices. We ask that you familiarize yourselves with the content of this policy document and follow the guidelines closely in the use of the school’s equipment. We are excited about this opportunity to enhance learning at Mt. Vernon Township High School and to help us prepare students to function effectively in a technology driven world. Respectfully, Mr. Wes Olson, Principal

Introduction In an effort to advance the educational achievement for all students, Mt. Vernon Township High School has made the decision to implement a 1:1 technology initiative in the Freshman Academy with the use of a tablet device. This implementation will bring the world to each student’s fingertips - anywhere at any time - and put the student at the forefront of not only becoming 21st century learners, but also becoming the recipients of a world-class opportunity to become responsible digital citizens. The policies, procedures, and information within this manual apply to all KUNO 4 devices and related accessories (power cords, covers, etc.) used at Mt. Vernon Township High School High School. Teachers may set additional requirements for use in their classrooms.

1. Receiving Your Tablet Device 1.1 Receiving Your Device Upon receipt of a “KUNO license” signed by the Freshman Academy Principal, Freshman Academy staff will assign a KUNO 4 Tablet to freshman students. Parents and students must sign and return the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) before the device can be issued to the student. Please review the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) posted on the school’s website. 1.2 Returning Your Device Students will return their device at the end of the school year so that they can be checked for serviceability. Students who transfer, withdraw, are expelled, or terminate enrollment at Mt. Vernon Township High School for any other reason must return their tablet device on the date of termination. Devices must be returned in good, working condition. Rooting or devices with no serial number would be examples of devices not returned in good working condition. It is the sole discretion of Mt. Vernon Township High School High School to make determinations on device condition. 1.3 Fines/Penalties KUNO 4 devices and accessories must be returned to the Mt. Vernon Township High School Technology Services Office (F101) at the end of the school year. Students who transfer or who are dismissed must return their device on the date of termination. If a student fails to return the device at the end of the school year or upon termination of enrollment at MVTHS, that student may be subject to criminal prosecution or civil liability. The student will also pay the replacement cost ($400) of the device or, if applicable, any insurance deductible. Failure to return the device will result in a theft report being filed. Furthermore, families are responsible for any damage to the device and must return the device and any accessories to the Mt. Vernon Township High School Technology Services Office (F101) in satisfactory condition. Families will be charged a fee for any needed repairs, not to exceed the replacement cost ($400) of the device not covered by the insurance plan, i.e. cover and cable.

2. Caring for Your Tablet Students are responsible for the general care of the tablet device they have been issued by Mt. Vernon Township High School. Devices that are broken or that fail to work properly must be taken to the Technology Services Help Desk for an evaluation of the equipment. Students are responsible for bringing a fully charged device to school each day. 2.1 General Precautions Each tablet device is the property of Mt. Vernon Township High School, and all users are expected to abide by the policies in this manual and those contained in Mt. Vernon Township High School’s AUP. 1. Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the screen, no cleansers of any type are to be used. 2. Cords and cables must be inserted carefully into the device to prevent damage. 3. Devices must remain free of writing, drawing, stickers, or labels. 4. Devices must never be left in an unlocked locker or any unsupervised area. 5. Devices must never be charged with any charger other than the KUNO charger provided. Other chargers will

permanently damage the device and the damage is not covered by insurance. 6. Due to heat conditions, devices should never be left in a vehicle. 7. Students are responsible for keeping their device’s battery charged for school each day and putting in sleep

mode when not in use. 2.2 Carrying Devices Protective cases have sufficient padding to protect the device during normal use and provide a suitable means for carrying the device within the school. School issued cases must be used with the device as designed and must be kept in good condition. These guidelines should be followed: 1. Devices should always be within the protective case when carried. 2. School bags can hold other objects (such as folders and workbooks), but these should be used with caution as

pressure and weight on the device may result in damage, for which the student will be responsible. 3. Students should never sit on or throw school bags. 2.3 Screen Care Device screens can be damaged if subject to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen. Please be mindful that devices are sensitive to weather conditions and should not be stowed in extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, or rain. 1. Do not lean on the top of the device when it is closed. 2. Do not place anything on or near the device that could put pressure on the screen. 3. Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover. 4. Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth. 5. Do not bump the device against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc.

3. Using Your Tablet Tablet devices are intended for school use each day. In addition to teacher expectations for device use, Google Apps, announcements, calendars, the MVTHS website, and the Student Handbook may be accessed using the tablet device. Students must be responsible to bring their device to all classes, unless specifically instructed not to do so by their teacher. 3.1 Not Having Your Device at School If students fail to bring their device to school, they are responsible for completing course work as though they had their device with them. Students who forget to bring their device to school may be issued a warning; multiple instances of this may result in a disciplinary referral. 3.2 Device Maintenance & Repair Loaner devices may be issued temporarily to students if it is determined from the Technology Services Department that the device needs to be kept for a period of time for repair. Students should seek help as soon as a Tablet problem surfaces. Unresolved problems can magnify support issues and can cause additional problems. Students are expected to be and will be taught how to be ACTIVE participants in problem resolution. Technology Services staff may facilitate the student in performing diagnostic tests and re-imaging the Tablet if necessary. If the Help Desk request cannot be resolved immediately, the request will be put into the queue and assigned a priority level. Currently there are three defined levels:

Priority 1 (emergency) - problems that prevent a user from performing school work in a normal fashion: a user’s Tablet crashes or freezes, Wi-Fi or authentication issues. Technology Services Department guarantees a response and assistance as soon as possible for individuals with P1 issues. Should a loaner become necessary, one will be provided. Priority 2 (intermediate) - loss of charger or battery life. The Help Desk will respond to the issue in priority order within regular school hours. Priority 3 (low) – problems that include technical or “how to” questions will be in priority order below P1 and P2 issues.

3.3 Charging Your Device Devices must be brought to school each day in fully charged condition. Students need to charge their devices each evening. Repeated violations may result in a disciplinary referral and/or loss of “KUNO license”. Before school, during study hall, or during lunch period, students may charge their device in the Technology Services Office (F101). *KUNO 4 devices should only be charged using the KUNO 4 charger.

3.4 Screensavers & Background Images All students are to maintain their name and grade on the lock screen image. The MVTHS screen saver must be used. The device must remain passcode protected. 3.5 Sound, Music, Games, Apps Students are permitted to utilize the device for personal use. However, doing so cannot be distracting to the educational setting. During school classroom hours devices should be used strictly for educational activities. Use of the device in school must be primarily for education. 1. Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. 2. Personal listening devices (head phones, ear buds) are permitted with teacher permission. 3. Music is allowed on the device and can be used at the discretion of the teacher. 4. Mt. Vernon Township High School is not responsible for lost or damaged applications or data related to

personal use. Syncing to a home Google Store account will result in school apps being deleted, and the student will be subject to disciplinary action.

3.6 Printing Wireless printing will be available with the tablet devices at Mt. Vernon Township High School. Tablet friendly printers will be available for student use in all Academy classrooms and the library. 3.7 Internet Access Students are allowed to set up wireless networks on their devices. This will assist them with device use while at home. Printing at home will require a wireless printer, proper settings on the device, and the correct application.

4. Managing Files & Saving Work 4.1 Saving to the Device / Home Directory Students may save work on their device; however, it is recommended that students use their personal Google Drive or e-mail documents to themselves to save them in their student folder on the MVTHS server. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion. Device malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for not submitting work. 4.2 Network Connectivity Mt. Vernon Township High School makes no guarantee that the school network will be up and running 100% of the time. In the rare case that the network is down, the school is not responsible for lost or missing data.

Vernon Township High School must remain on the device in usable condition and must be easily accessible at all times. From time to time, the school may add software applications for use in a particular course. 5.2 Additional Software Students are permitted to put additional software on their device. This must be approved through a process. See Freshman Academy Principal or staff for more information. Mt. Vernon Township High School is not responsible for any loss of personal software; such software must follow the same guidelines covered in Section 3.5. 5.3 Inspection Mt. Vernon Township High School reserves the right to inspect devices on demand. Students may be selected at random to provide their device for inspection. 5.4 Procedure for Reloading Software If technical difficulties occur or if illegal software is discovered, the device will be restored from backup. Mt. Vernon Township High School does not accept responsibility for the loss of any software or documents deleted due to a reformat and/or reimage. 5.5 Software upgrades Upgrade versions of licensed software and applications are available from time to time. Students may be required to check in their devices for periodic updates and syncing.

11. Tablet FAQ’s What is the configuration of my KUNO 4 Tablet? See page 14. What if I already have another model or brand of tablet? All freshman will be required to use the school district issued tablet for school purposes. This is necessary to ensure that you have a tablet that gives you network capability and the ability to run the software that you will need in your courses. The Mt. Vernon Township High School District is also limited to providing maintenance service or assistance for only the KUNO 4 Tablets. For these reasons, other tablets will not be used on the Mt. Vernon Township High School network at school. Can I keep my tablet during the summer? No. All tablets will be collected at the end of the school year for general maintenance, cleaning, and software installation purposes. Students will receive their tablets prior to school starting each fall to ensure that everyone receives necessary updates and complete information about the tablet, including its warranty, insurance coverage, software usage and Mt. Vernon Township High School’s policy regarding the ethical use of computers. Where do I find a KUNO 4 authorized service technician? Mt. Vernon Township High School will work with the authorized service technicians. If you have a question or a service need, take your tablet to the Technology Services Department (F101). What about insurance against theft or breakage through carelessness? Your tablet is very portable and very valuable, making it an attractive target for thieves. Therefore, the Mt. Vernon Township High School District has purchased protection insurance that covers the tablet. The best insurance is to take care of your tablet. Do not leave your tablet in the building, classroom, commons, or car unattended. Always know where your tablet is! Above all, take your table home each night. Does Mt. Vernon Township High School provide maintenance on my KUNO 4 tablet? Yes, the Technology Services Department staff will coordinate maintenance for students. What will I do without a tablet in my classes if my tablet unit is being repaired or while I am replacing it if it is lost or stolen? Mt. Vernon Township High School stocks a limited number of tablets that can be loaned out on a first come, first served basis. You will be able to apply for a loaner unit at the Help Desk in the Technology Services Office (F101), the same area where you will go for service on your tablet computer. If you are in possession of a loaner, treat it as if it were your own tablet. You will be responsible for any damage to the unit or for its loss. Do I need a printer? You need not own one since printers will be made available at the school as needed. How do I connect to the Internet at home? You may connect to the Internet using a wireless Ethernet connection. If you maintain a wireless home network, you must set the tablet to connect to your wireless connection. Dial-up Internet connections will not work on the school tablet. Will I be given a new battery if mine goes bad? The tablet battery will be replaced by the manufacturer for confirmed defects. What has the school done to help prevent students from going to inappropriate sites? We have a software product which is designed to help monitor all Internet sites that students attempt to access. This software blocks inappropriate sites and also logs a history of every site that each user opens. All students who attempt to find inappropriate sites will be directed to the Attendance Office.

Page 16: TABLET POLICY MANUAL

Page 16

Are student tablets subject to monitoring at school; what if a student brings their tablet in for repairs and “objectionable data” is detected? Inappropriate material on tablets should be reported to the classroom teacher, technology director, or Help Desk immediately upon identification. Students who have “objectionable data” on their tablet, but have failed or chosen not to report it, will be referred to the Attendance Office. If the accessories to my tablet are lost or stolen, how much will it cost to replace them? In the event that tablet accessories are stolen, you should report the lost items to the Help Desk. The cost to replace specific accessories is listed below: a) Polycarbonate case: $45.00 b) Charger: $35.00 c) Stylus: $15.00 d) Keyboard: $45.00 What is unacceptable behavior?
