Lab GuidanceThe Management Pack for Oracle OEM provides unified management of OracleWorkloads Running on VMware through a tool that both Oracle admins and VMwareadmins can jointly use to understand the relationship, availability, performance, as wellas bottlenecks within your converged Oracle and VMware environment. This enablesintelligent operations and the ability to proactively avoid performance issues and gaindeep insights into the health, risk, and efficiency of Oracle running on VMware. On topof it all, you gain vCenter Operations native capacity planning and predictive analyticsto forecast critical Oracle related outages well before they occur.
Learn how to get the most out of your data contained in Oracle Enterprise Managerusing vCenter Operations Manager. This lab will guide you through the process ofinstalling and configuring the vCenter Operations Management Pack for OracleEnterprise Manager, as well as walk you through common use cases on how to utilizethe management pack to achieve comprehensive visibility and insights into theperformance, capacity, and health of the monitored infrastructure. The entire lab willtake 2 - 3 hours to complete. Each module in the lab is independent and can beperformed in any order.
Table of Contents
This Hands on Lab will contain the following modules.
Overview of Oracle Enterprise ManagerWhat is the vCenter Operations Management Pack for Oracle Enterprise Manager? TheManagement Pack takes in metrics about “Targets” (managed objects like databases, listeners, servers, data stores, etc.) along with Oracle performance data, availabilitydata, configuration data, and relationship data. The Blue Medora Management Pack canthen take advantage of the advanced event correlation and predictive analyticcapabilities that make vCenter Operations the most powerful tool for helping IT Adminsto maintain the health of, reduce risk of issues occurring in, and to optimize, the ITenvironment.
Why deploy vCenter Operations for Oracle EnterpriseManager?
vCenter Operations Manager provides the following benefits when used in conjunctionwith Oracle Enterprise Manager:
1. Unified Management of Oracle Workloads Running on VMware: provides a toolthat both Oracle admins and VMware admins can jointly use to understand therelationships, availability, performance, and bottlenecks within your convergedOracle and VMware environment.
2. Intelligent Operations: ability to proactively avoid performance issues and gaindeep insights into the health, risk, and efficiency of Oracle running on VMware.
3. vCenter Operations Native Capacity Planning and Predictive Analytics: forecastscritical Oracle related outages well before they occur.
For each configured OEM ‘Target’ (i.e. a Database, an Operating System, a WebLogicJ2EE instance, etc), OEM collects and storeshundreds of near-real-time health, performance, availability, and configuration metrics. These are the same metrics thatare used within OEM to visualize Oracle environments and generate alerts on issues.
The Blue Medora vC Ops Management Pack for OEM makes all these essential Oracle-related metrics available within vCenter Operations Manager. It allows the use ofvCenter Operations Manager’s capabilities to identify performance issues and gain deepinsights into the health, risk and efficiency of your virtual and physical Oracle workloads(the underlying operating systems and in particular related VMware infrastructure, ifapplicable). The Blue Medora Management Pack for OEM helps customers recognizeand address symptoms that threaten performance and availability, before thesymptoms become issues that impact business users and the business itself.

Leverage Oracle Focused Real-time Metrics
The next generation vCenter Operations Management Pack for OEM provides deepvCenter Operations visibility into a customer’s entire OEM managed estates includingcritical data on Oracle technologies such as:
View Performance, Health, andAvailability Metrics for OracleWorkloadsThe greatest benefit of connecting vCenter Operations to Oracle Enterprise Manager isthat it allows customers to have a unified and integrated view of their critical Oracleworkloads that are virtualized with VMware. This integration reveals the key metrics thatmust be monitored, tracked, and measured from each platform to ensure overall systemavailability and efficiency.

Reducing Metrics Collected ThroughAdvanced Filtering ConfigurationThe resourceGroups.conf file allows turning on and off resource groups. Turning off aresource group will cause it to not be collected from Oracle Enterprise Manager oradded into vCenter Operations Manager. Limiting the number of resource groups resultsin higher performance both for Oracle Enterprise Manager (faster query execution) andvCenter Operations Manager (reduced processing and storage requirements).
This file is created when the first collect cycle starts for an adapter instance, and willcontain all Resource Groups present in MGMT$METRIC_CURRENT. By default, onlyResource Groups that are not instanced will be marked to collect (i.e., the value for thecolumn key_value in MGMT$METRIC_CURRENT is null).
