David Lett planted the first Pinot Noir vines in the Willamette Valley, in 1965. The “South Block” is ten rows of vines planted in 1968 at Eyrie’s original vineyard. In 1975, David began bottling the wine from these vines separately. At two international wine competitions in Paris (1979) and Beaune (1980), the 1975 South Block Reserve gathered high scores, finishing only two-tenths of a point below the Drouhin 1959 Chambolle -Musigny. It was the first time an American Pinot noir had competed successfully with the great wines of Burgundy, and the first formal recognition of Oregon as a top-rank wine-growing region.

The mountain vineyards of Napa tend to show wines that are extracted and rich. In the right hands, these grapes can be made in to wines with great structure, depth and a sense of refinement. I believe these selections fit the bill.

Voted as winemaker of the year in 2011 by the SF Chronicle, Cathy Corison is a beacon classic cabernet sauvignon winemaking. After making wines for Chappellet and Staglin for years she started her own label in 1987. Her balanced approach has gained her a devout following by sommeliers and collectors alike.
Beringer winery was established in 1876 and is one of the iconic houses of Napa Valley. Starting in 1977, Ed Sbragia created Private Reserve using the best fruit from their historic vineyard holdings throughout the mountains and valley of Napa. It is still consider a benchmark for California Cabernet.
Norman de Leuze, ZD Wines Founder was a pioneer in the California wine industry. He began working to produce World Class California Wine in the 60’s, a time when there were very few other California wineries. In 1969, when the winery was bonded, it had been over a decade since a winery had been started in Sonoma County.
