How your lab should look to beginThe USX Manager is used to
configure and deploy multiple USX appliances which havedifferent
roles. Please spend a few minutes familiarizing yourself with some
of theconcepts in Module 1- Atlantis USX - Experience the USX
Manager. In this lab we will notbe using any local direct attached
storage (DAS) or local flash storage. For the purposesof this lab,
deployment has already been accomplished and we will focus on
AtlantisUSX usability and functionality.
Terminology
SAN = vsanDatastore (VMware VSAN), ds-site-a-nfs01
RAM = local RAM within each ESXi server
Service VM's = consumes pre-configured amounts of local (RAM)
and sharedresources for presentation by the Volume VM
Volume VM = (USX-VOL-1, USX-VOL-2) NFS export of an application
definedstorage volume for applications to use as storage.
Diagram 1
The initial deployment of USX Service and Volume VM's have been
created for you asthe limited resources on each ESXi server falls
below the Atlantis USX minimumconfiguration guidelines.
Modifications have been made to allow for the presentationsof
limited volume sizes. Login to vCenter vcsa-01a using Windows
session credentials toview the default setup.

Diagram 2
Once logged into the vCenter check each of the current USX
datastore's (USX-VOL-1-ds,USX-VOL-2-ds) to make sure no additional
VM's are stored as this would limit the abilityto perform some of
the tasks later in this lab.

Preferences
Preferences is the interface where General, Configuration, and
HA settings may be set.Of particular attention are the following
Quick Settings that require attention.
1. Enable advanced settings, visible during USX Volume
creation.
2. In a hyper-converged configuration, local storage must be
selected.
3. In a hybrid configuration (using SAN\NAS), shared storage
must be selected.
4. The percentages for resource allocation can vary, but a good
rule is accept thedefault settings of 90% for Max Storage
Allocation, 30% for Max Memory Allocation(depending on deployment
type), and 90% for Max Flash Allocation.
NOTE: Settings within the lab are set to disable use of Local
and Flash storage (hence, their value of 1) and to maximize memory
resources.

Manage Volumes
From the Quick Links menu on Manage, select Manage Volumes. This
view providesconfiguration settings of the USX Volume. The same
Action items identified earlier arealso presented here.
1. Once a volume is created, it can be mounted to a
hypervisor(s), multiple in the caseof hypervisor clusters or when
working with non-simple USX volumes.
2. To establish HA configuration for an existing volume, simply
select Enable HA (Do notperform this operation within this lab,
resources are not sufficient). Of course, the
HOL-PRT-1465
Page 18HOL-PRT-1465

hypervisor must have sufficient resources to support the HA VM.
The HA VM is, simplyput, a container that has the ability to
takeover and run the volume service in the eventof a critical issue
happening such as a host failure affecting the running volume.
3. Teleport provides the functionality of moving a de-duplicated
and compressed virtualmachine resource from one USX Volume to
another USX Volume. USX Backup is verysimilar to the Teleport, but
without actually moving the resource, only creating a de-duplicate
copy of the resource in the destination volume. These functions
will bedemonstrated later in this lab.
4. Fast Clone is USX functionality that can be used to create
duplicates of a virtualmachine very efficiently, provisioning new
VMs in a matter of seconds. This function willbe demonstrated later
in this lab.
Create Volume
Selecting the Create Volume link from Quick Links or from the
Actions menu's previouslycovered will launch the Create Volume
wizard.
NOTE: Do not create additional volumes within this lab. The
following is informationalonly. Limited resources only allow the
demonstration of functionality and notdeployment.
1. Select from Hybrid, All Flash, or In-Memory USX Volume types
for deployment acrossmultiple hypervisors (minimum of 3). Select
Simple Hybrid or Simple In-Memory todeploy USX Volumes in a single
hypervisor. The Simple volumes are much like theflagship ILIO
product that put Atlantis on the map. The Simple Hybrid is for use
withpersistent desktops and Simple In-Memory is for stateless
workloads.
2. Enter the size of the volume required. To enter this
information, a proper sizingexercise should have taken place with
an Atlantis certified partner or SE resource.

Clone Ubuntu VM- What's the big deal?
Let's look at a few items to show just how much of an impact USX
can provide.
Look at the difference in time
1. How long did the initial clone take?
2. How long did the second clone take?
3. How did they compare?
The time difference is going to depend on lab workload and
available network. Duringtesting, we received a 31% reduction in
time for clone operation. While that doesn't addup to much during a
single clone of an 800MB operating system, what would itrepresent
with 1,000 x 800MB VM's?

2. After two full clone operations of the same ubuntu VM, how
much did your used spacegrow?
3. Notice the response time from the between vCenter operation

BackupThis module will identify all of the steps necessary to
use the Atlantis USX Backupfunction. Backup utilizes our
de-duplication aware transport technology, allowing forWAN friendly
transfer of VM's and associated workloads.
Backups of Powered Off virtual machines utilize the same
technology as the Teleportwithout removing the source files and
updating configuration files pointing to datastore. The backup
performed in this procedure is the first VM stored in the USX-VOL-2
volume, therefore this will be a complete copy. The benefits will be
identified when usingTeleport to MOVE a DIFFERENT VM to the
USX-VOL-2 datastore. Even though the VM isdifferent, USX will
deduplicate it against the backup performed here.

Movement of VM from one USX Volume to another, 21 seconds.
Teleport- Complete vCenter
vCenter reports the process that takes place after USX Teleoport
creates a replica of thesource volume.
Teleport- Concluded
1. In the end, the second USX Volume (USX-VOL-2) contains a
backup of Clone-Ubuntu-01 and the Teleport of Clone-Ubuntu-02.
2. That is two full clones of the Ubuntu VM from the first
exercise, all in 2.48GB ofcapacity.

Even though USX-VOL-2 had never seen the VM Teleported from
USX-VOL-1, it is contentaware and deduplicates against what it has
on record for it's own datastore. Bottom lineis that only the
blocks that are different from one VM to another are transferred
betweenUSX Volumes when leveraging Atlantis Teleport or Backup
functionality.
