Top storylinesKenenisa Bekele and Eliud Kipchoge chase historyKenenisa Bekele (ETH) and Eliud Kipchoge (KEN) first began competing against each other more than a decade ago at the 2003 IAAF World Championships in the 5,000m. While the two men have gone head-to-head more than a dozen times in their careers, their biggest challenge on race day will be the course record, 2:03:45, set last year by Kenya’s Dennis Kimetto. Only five men in history have broken 2:04 on record-eligible courses.
Bekele, three-time Olympic Gold medalist, 18-time World Championship medalist and current world record holder in the 5,000m and 10,000m, has only raced on American soil five times in his 15-year career. His marathon debut at the 2014 Schneider Electric Paris Marathon turned out to be one for the record books, setting a new course record, 2:05:04. Kipchoge transitioned from the track to the roads in 2012, and won his marathon debut at the 2013 Hamburg Marathon in a course record 2:05:30. He started his 2014 campaign with a win at the Rotterdam Marathon, clocking an even 2:05:00.
Tatyana McFadden half way to another WMM grand slam In 2013, Tatyana McFadden accomplished what no other athlete, wheelchair or able-bodied, has ever accomplished – a grand slam, winning four World Marathon Majors in one year (Boston, London, Chicago and New York). A 10-time U.S. Summer Paralympic track and field medalist, she went on to win her first Winter Paralympic medal in Sochi earlier this year and is now half way to completing her second grand slam, having defended her titles at both Boston and London, where she set a new course record, 1:45:12. On October 12, McFadden will compete for her fifth Chicago win in six years. She currently holds the Bank of America Chicago Marathon women’s wheelchair course record, 1:42:35.
Bank of America Chicago Marathon has record impact on local economyThe Bank of America Chicago Marathon continues to be a key economic driver for the city of Chicago. The Chicago Marathon contributed an estimated $253.49 million in total business activity to the Chicago economy in 2013, according to the annual University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s Regional Economics Applications Laboratory (R.E.A.L.) report, with tourism accounting for more than 40% of the overall sum. This is the first time that the economic impact of the Marathon has exceeded $250 million. By comparison, the impact of the 2012 Bank of America Chicago Marathon was $243.46 million.
Bank of America Chicago Marathon celebrates major milestones This year, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Steve Jones’ world record. Jones made history after crossing Chicago’s finish line in 2:08:05, breaking the previous record by 13 seconds, and setting the first world record on Chicago’s course. The Chicago Marathon will also be celebrating the 30th anniversary of its first wheelchair competition. The field that started with six racers has since grown to more than 50. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of Carey Pinkowski’s tenure as executive race director. Pinkowski’s 25 years at the helm make him the longest standing World Marathon Majors race director.
Elites Lisa Uhl and Matt Llano make marathon debuts Olympian Lisa Uhl and Arizona elite Matt Llano will make their marathon debuts on October 12 in Chicago’s Grant Park. Uhl, the seventh-fastest American over 10,000m, was inspired to re-evaluate her career and ultimately make the move to the marathon after watching the 2013 Bank of America Chicago Marathon from the finish line. Uhl has won on these streets before; she broke the tape at the 2013 Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle 8k.

MediaMatt Llano of the Northern Arizona Elite team will also be making his marathon debut in Chicago and has stated that he will be going after Ryan Hall’s American Marathon Debut Record of 2:08:24. Last December, Llano came out as being gay, making him the first elite distance runner to do so. He has stated that he hopes he can use his running platform to be a role model for others.
Notable runners participating Chicago Chef Graham Elliot of “MasterChef,” “MasterChef Junior” and owner of Graham Elliot Bistro, will be running his debut marathon on October 12. He and his wife Allie will be running in support of Smile Train, a non-profit organization that provides corrective surgeries and related treatment to children with cleft lips and/or palates. This is an organization that Graham and Allie became very involved in after their son was born with a cleft lip and palate. Other notable runners include Chicago Chef Dave Beran, of NEXT, who will be running the Bank of America Chicago Marathon for the fifth time, and Christy Turlington, model and founder of Every Mother Counts, who will be making her debut appearance at the race.
