Adaptive can furnish quality Dynamic Message Signs that meets today’s DOT specifications. For over a decade, Adaptive Micro Systems has provided the transportation industry with state-of-the-art LED based Dynamic Message Signs. Adaptive’s broad DMS product range covers virtually every messaging application from roadside (Intelligent Transportation Systems / ITS), to airport, to bus and rail.

Whether the specifications call for small pitch bus shelter displays or large format over-the-highway DMS systems, Adaptive can manufacture LED Displays in any character size, enclosure type, or LED color you need.

Utilizing state-of-the-art software and LED display connectivity solutions, Adaptive offers its ITS, transit, and roadway customers the most advanced deployment NTCIP displays and controller software in the industry.

Transportation is going places it never has before – and Adaptive builds the LED display solutions to keep it running smoothly.

The long life and versatility of Adaptive LED displays make them ideal for a variety of Intelligent Transportation Systems requirements: over-the-road Dynamic Message Signs, variable speed limit signs, and even full-color ITS display options.

Fully compliant with NTCIP and MUTCD standards, Adaptive LED displays are durable and designed to withstand the rigors of the roadway.

Adaptive provides the software to run your ITS as well, combining user-friendly interfaces with maximum control and compatibility with a wide range of other systems.

Exclusive Features

Adaptive’s Approach to Heat ManagementOutdoor displays are exposed to incredible extremes of heat, cold, wind, rain, fog, dust, and other environmental forces. Combine those exterior stresses with the interior stresses generated by a box full of heat-generating electronic components and you need to ask yourself, “How does a display adequately balance these influences, yet still offer reliable performance?”

Adaptive’s Sealed Solution• Adaptive Front Access enclosures prevent heat from circulating throughout the unit or

rising and collecting in one place at the top of the sign, overheating what components might be there.

• Adaptive’s newest technology designed to provide longevity to the LED’s and power supplies. In order to provide this high quality of DMS, Adaptive has designed the environmental controls to provide three levels of protection. Level one protection utilizes an internal mixing fan designed to turn on and cool the electronics. Level two protection is designed to augment the cooling when level one can not sufficiently cool the enclosure. This is accomplished at the high end of the temperature rating for the sign and exchanges outside air to bring the internal temperature down so that level one protection of internal mixing fans takes over. Level three protection is the last resort of LED display shut down. This only happens at the high limit of the signs internal electronics.

• Conformal-coated components that can freely exchange any heat generated to inside the enclosure, unlike potted and insulated components which trap heat.

• Gold-plated connectors used for high-speed data lines offer greater efficiency, generate less heat, and insure long-term reliability.

• Exclusive thermal/power management design of the PC board, which wicks heat away from critical components and dissipates it readily and evenly throughout the rest of the enclosure.

• Thermal Management Software routines designed to protect critical components from damage due to over temperature conditions.

Independent LED Outage DetectionAdaptive provides independents for each LED, which means if one LED fails the rest of the LED’s will not be affected in that pixel. Upon three LED failures the DMS will notify the Traffic Management Center, that LED display needs repair. This added value to the independent LED detection gives the extra time to repair the DMS on routine maintenance of the DMS, without the need of expensive non-scheduled lane closures. Adaptive constantly looks for ways to improve its digital displays’ contrast ratios and achieve optimum viewing characteristics with the least amount of brightness.

Adaptive provides 8 Led’s per pixel on 18-inch characters, which helps over driving the LED’s to achieve 40Cd per pixel. Adaptive can keep the current to each LED to 20ma and drive the LED’s at only 60 percent, to help extend the life of the LED.

Retrofit

Q&Aretrofitting of the over-the-highway VMS with LED display technology

What are the advantages of retrofitting flip-disk with LED display technology? One of the most immediate benefits will be the decrease in escalating service costs. By comparison, LED technology is solid state and rated at 100,000 hours of field operation. Important operational benefits exist as well. For example, if power is lost or there is a major system failure, all LEDs will be in the off state eliminating the possibility of erroneous message displays. NTCIP software also allows for sophisticated central system pixel and sign diagnostics.

retrofit versus new, how do the costs compare?Current experience suggests that retrofitting versus new can result in as much as a 60%-70% savings per sign. This savings takes into account the costs of removing and re-installing display technology, possible lane closures to perform the work and the costs to validate existing sign structures to accommodate the new technology.

What sign components can be reused in a VMS retrofit? The majority of the sign structure, including the sign and controller cabinets, communication cables between the cabinets and communication network can be reused. Upgrades to the ventilation and light and temperature systems are evaluated on a per sign basis.

how long does a typical retrofit (105 X 28 over-the-highway) take?Does a retrofit require lane closures? To maximize cost savings, every effort is made to perform retrofits without removing the sign enclosure or requiring lane closures. Depending on the sign’s internal design, removing and installing new display technology will take on average 2-5 days.

To what extent does a LED retrofit require a new field controller? In the majority of cases, all retrofits will include a new AlphaXpressTM sign controller. For many, this results in a major system upgrade to a fully NTCIP compliant solution. Adaptive software engineers work with the department to insure compatibility with their central system software.

What aspects of the retrofit project does Adaptive manage?By working directly with the DOT’s service group or coordinating the installation activity with a 3rd party installer, Adaptive minimizes any impact on DOT personnel time.

What retrofit warranty and documentation is provided by Adaptive?A full one(1) year warranty is standard for AlphaXpressTM retrofit components, and multiple year warranties are available. In addition to a CD software diagnostics manual, sign specific wiring diagrams are provided.

how does Adaptive test a retrofit solution for functionality? In addition to Adaptive’s standard manufacturing and QA testing, 2 additional tests are provided. A factory acceptance and quality assurance test is performed at Adaptive, demonstrating controller and display module function, controller operation and system reliability. Customers are encouraged to attend. And a 2nd post installation test documenting operation of all sign functions and insuring a 30-day “problem free” operation.

Adaptive provides complete training for both the maintenance group and the operationgroup. This can be done at Adaptive’s training facility or at the users site. A full documentation package is provided.

Over the past seven years the utah Department of Transportation have installed forty-seven (47) MARK IV Electrical mechanical Walk-in Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) using fiber optic shutter technology. Since that time, Light Emitting Diodes (LED) technology has progressed to a level that the Department would like to retrofit the 47 signs using the LED technology. The contract will provide the material to retrofit uDOT’s present fiber optic shutter DMS to LED technology. uDOT started with retrofitting one sign and followed with retrofitting of signs in groups of 10.

The majority of the signs consist of walk-in enclosures using flip disk/fiber optic display technology. Rising service costs and short supply of parts forced a retrofit versus new DMS based on new structure requirements and cost of new signs. The decision was made to retrofit with all new display technology and control electronics within the existing sign enclosures. uDOT has retrofitted the signs with minimal issues. Adaptive provided retrofit kits over the past four years with the following:

• 5X7 LED display modules • 8-LEDs per pixel 40Cd output • NTCIP DMS controllers

• Interconnect cabling • TS-2 Power supplies • Photocells with temperature sensors
