Today it is roughly 6 weeks to go before the next Team Mastery Brazil team coaching program starts along with the other Team Mastery programs that will be kickstarted at the 5th Anniversary of Mondragon Team Academy in Basque Country in June.
Team Mastery is a program to learn Team Coaching and applying Team Academy in your own environment. Team Coaching as a profession is still rather new and rare although it offers great comptetitive edge for companies that use it. How is Team Coaching as a job and what is the need it responds to?

“Cooperative Needs to Be Coached by a Professional Team Coach”
According to world-acclaimed team learning guru Peter Senge no high-performing team has been built without a team coach. This raises a critical question: why is the training of team coaches still at its infancy in the business world?
For twenty years my team coaching work has included four elementary elements: experiences, thoughts, concretization and active experimenting. A similar model is also the internationally known GROW –model by Graham Alexander where “Goal Setting” equals experiences, “Reality” thoughts, “Options” concretization and “What will you do” active experimenting.
Team coach must have his mind and heart fully at the team’s goals. He must support the team members to achieve these goals. When a group of people gathers to accomplish a shared task, each individual must understand what his or her
role is and how the team can accomplish the task as a team.
Team coach doesn’t necessarily have to be a top-notch expert in the field that the team is operating in. For example, not all top-level sports team’s coaches are former top-level athletes. The disciplines and principles of leadership are the same whatever the operating field is. However, the team coach should have at least good level of expertise in a field that is similar or close to the team’s field. It increases team coach’s credibility and helps facilitating the team’s discussions.
Team coach must create his or her own personal coaching model and must adapt his or her perspective to different coaching situations in flexible way. He or she is an example for his team through his or her personality in the role of a teacher and learner. My own experience on team coaching has affirmed to me that the team coach cannot be a member of the team he or she is coaching. Team coach guides the process but not the content. He or she must not lead the team or give the team instructions on how to do business. Team coach cannot be part of the team’s internal conflicts or work as a therapist for individual team members. He or she must always remember that he or she is the service of the whole team and organization.
Team coach focuses on the strengths of the team members. This way he or she strengthens the self-esteem of each individual in the team. Team coach is fully committed to these people he or she coaches. Experienced team coach does not command or give orders, but inspires. Proficient team coach provides the team exciting possibilities and new, fresh ideas to be processed and implemented.
Team coaching prepares people to work in the future world. In simplest terms team coaching can be defined as “supporting the change in individual’s behaviour”. Team members are all the time asked: what are you going to do better next time? The purpose of team coaching is to help the person to become a better team
learner and teampreneur in his or her own cooperative.
Management education is going through a change. It is moving away from classrooms to learning by doing in workplaces. As a rule of thumb, management education should be conducted 70 % of time at workplace, 10 % at workshops and 20 % in team learning sessions facilitated by a team coach.
Experiential learning is at the core of team learning and actually in all learning. The important question is: How can we improve the possibilities of applying theory into practice? When trying to find answers to this question, it is of critical importance to have trained, professional team coaches in team-based companies and organizations. To develop the training of team coaches, we need more researched knowledge on team coaching, the competency fields of team coaches and passionate people who are 100 % committed to training the next generation of team coaches.
The myth of a lone hero who alone accomplishes great things still lives in the imaginations of Western people. Evidence from the real life doesn’t support this myth at all. For example, Michelangelo was surely one of the world’s most remarkable artists. But, he didn’t create the paintings of Vatican’s Sistine Chapel alone – he had a team consisting of 16 artists. Unfortunately the lone hero myth is one obstacle in developing teamwork in organizations. The grand mission of team coaching training is to bust this myth once and for all.
