It’s a Warm Day in Kansas

Research:

The first thing that we did for research was just some basic

geography/geology information gathering on Kansas and caves in

general. Kansas isn’t known for having caves, but this worked out to

our advantage in our plotline. Since the Wal-mart in our story just

so happens to fall into this cave system, it wasn’t supposed to be

anything that anyone knew about.

Next we began writing the script with this knowledge in mind,

although it didn’t change too much about our general, original idea.

We just did a quick Google search for different ideas of what we had

each character looking like, and clothing ideas. Finally, for ideas

for monsters, we just searched for images of different types of

creatures we could potentially use various aspects from.

The basis for the whole thing is actually based on discoveries found

by geophysicists. The discoveries are just convoluted theories, but

there have been recordings of heavy magnetic fields around the Bermuda

Triangle, which disrupted radio and navigation equipment. Same goes

for Afghanistan. Some areas the army can’t go into because they lose

communication.

It is a warm day in Kansas. We see TOM NELSON smoking a Lucky Strike next to his 1955 Ford pick up truck. He throws his cigarette on to a Prius. We see his burly walk through parking lot into the sliding doors of Wal-mart. He winks at the sexy greeter. The greeter smiles and punches him in the arm. We see him proceed to aisle 5-B: the toy isle. He picks up a pregnant Barbie doll and scoffs. We see from behind him LIN LEE entering the aisle. He notices that she’s inspecting a G-I Joe. They have mutual conversation over their children. We learn that they are divorced with children and their birthday is today. We see the shelves shake and hear a low grumble. The toys begin to drop off the shelves. We hear a large crack, the lights shut off and the store begins tipping in 1 direction. Carts go sliding. People frantically grab for safety. Through the window, you can see the horizon turning perpendicular to the window frame. Tom takes Lin and locates a restroom. They lock themselves in the bathroom. They begin to hear screams and feel a lot of shaking. There is a rough jolt that throws them against the wall followed by more screams and the camera slowly fades to black. 2 weeks later, supplies are low, a sewage line has leaked into the building. The smell vile, and spurs debate whether people should stay in the store or look for a way out. We see a person dead, with a knife in their back. Lin and Tom decide this is the finally straw and they now are set on looking for a way out. They seek other people to join them because they do not want to go out alone. We see light beams erupt out of the doors on the Wal-Mart. The group, hefting Mag-light flashlights, inspect the glossy surface of the cavern before them. They spot an opening in the wall containing several ominous stalactites. Tom gives a wary look to Lin. They inspect further and we see Lin point with her flashlight to a glowing dot on the ground. They find another exit of bigger proportions, covered with moss and efflorescent flowers. We see them proceed into the dim-lit tunnel. We see Tom and Lin emerge first from the mossy tunnel. Their Mag light beams suggest that this is another – much larger- cavern. In the distance lights (similar to the ones in the tunnel) fade in, and the cavern is illuminated. Before them is a gorge that spans into darkness. Floating in front of them are illuminated islands with an assortment of alien vegetation and vines hanging-connecting. Lin points out that there are additional

islands that move. She begins to ramble about the possibility of this geological phenomina. Flux magnetic vortexes is brought up. The group explores on the floating/moving islands, continuing to discover the alien features. Florescent squealing bugs crawl over the ground, making Lin shriek. They come to a cave entrance in the biggest island they’ve explored. We see a deep blue glow eminating from inside. They decide to go in and inspect. We see a silhouetted small figure approach from the depths. When it comes into full view we notice its some sort of bald monkey with 3 glowing-blue eyes and sharp teeth. It utters a screech that sounds like speech. The team panic and begin to run. Overhead they see thousands of small blue dots appear. Flying creatures hail them from above, killing ________. We hear one say to run back to Wal-Mart. With the aliens in hot pursuit, the team dashes to the Wal-Mart. Tom throws himself against the sliding doors, demanding JACK MINNS, the manager, to unlock. The group is forced to fight the creatures while the others inside react slowly due to amazement. Tom, Lin, and a few others make it in, and they explain what they went through. We see what is left of walmart flood out of the side door, running to the only escape they know is possible: the cave covered in stalactites. We see the group arrive at the end and we notice it’s the same cavern from before!

Name Personality/Past Appearance

TOM Has a daughter, divorced, never re-married. Gulf War veteran. Daughter is most precious to him. Smokes. He lives an easy life, doesn’t travel much. His occupation is a construction worker. He drives a 1988 Ford pickup truck. He usually goes to Wal-Mart to seek out women. Has no problem with showing authority. He writes short storys.

Rough, but handsome. He has good muscular structure. Baseball cap. Short, scruffly beard. Blue denim jeans, shit-kicker boots. Beige working shirt. Dirty/dusty. Wears cologne. Green eyes.

LIN Has a son, just divorced recently. Had 4 husbands- has connection issues. Second husband left her because she was raped, caused the birth of son. She is incredibly smart. PHD in geology and tectonic plates, magnetic fluxes. Her sister is a pop star in Japan. Quirky. Father lives in Japan.

Average build (not beautiful or ugly). She wears post-modern glasses. Japanese-American. Short with long legs. Long coat. Converse shoes. Colorful Skirt. Hazel eyes. Blue satchel.

JACK Conservative. Has a loud voice because he’s slightly deaf. Has 4 sons in the army. Patriotic, has faith in the integrity of the government. A little racist. He is a retired EMT. Deeply religious.

Chubby, old, whiter hair, pocket-protector. Plaid shirt, cowboy hat. Brown cowboy boots. Loose jeans. Big head, and short.

EVA HOCKETT

Six year old girl. Mom died in Wal-Mart. Very curious in different things. Very active. Grown up in very urban area with wealthy family. Therefore, very curious about things she see in the floating island and walks around herself, making TOM and LIN to search for her in the middle of the forest. Has an asthma.

Long brown hair. Brown eyes. Average 6 year old height. Has no two front teeth. Wears pink one-piece. (I’m thinking of “Connie Talbot” as her image). Have very red lips. Relatively cute face.

MORAN MILLER

Has an age of 37. Has no job. He acts very powerful and courageous, but it can be easily seen that he is very weak hearted, and a coward. Calls himself to be a former part of Mafia, but actually he was just a normal person who graduated in a small community college. He doesn’t want to reveal his past. Never had a girl friend before and never even kissed a girl before. His afraid to go out, so decides to stay in. He lies a lot. Thinks him before others. Does not want to die, and he can do anything to live even if it is sacrificing others.

Very thin, dark brown curly short hair. Very very white (not tanned). Tall. Wearing a white shirt, but little bit loose for him. Has relatively small face. Big green eyes, thick eye brow. And a relatively small mouth. Wearing a semi-formal grey pant. Wearing thick glasses that have no frames. Wearing a New Balance running shoes.

Mary Stay at home “soccer mom” whose one main concern is the well being of her kids. She is more worries about her children than her own safety. Good at budgeting time because she has several children.

Brunette mom who doesn’t have the time, or the care for makeup/neat hair.

Joanne Middle school teacher who hates her job because the kids never seem to care about what she has to say.

Marshall 15-year-old boy, who is having an inner struggle of trying to become a man.

Scrawny teenager. Messy colicky, red hair.

Karl Age 45, struggling musician whose music isn’t quite taking him where he would like to be.

Tall, average build with longish shaggy brown hair.

Jason 47 years old. He’s homeless. Murdered his wife after their divorce. He is

Burly, overcoat, unkempt beard and hair. Gray eyes. Boots. Wife-beater under jacket.

bi-polar. Jailed for 22 years, released on “good behavior.” Anti-social behavior, not talkative, silent. Does heroin.

Swastika tattoo on arm. Full sleeves with dragons. Sickle and hammer tattoo on the tongue.

Marc Beever Soldier, on leave from duty. Marine division, Sgt. JUST came back from Iraq. He’s getting his wife ice cream while she’s in hospital after giving birth. He passes time playing chess. He is “the good ol’ boy from out West.”

Military Uniform. Short red hair. Deep-blue eyes. Physically fit and huge. Carries handguns at all times, one in belt and other in boot. Commando knife in belt. Marine tattoo of a naked woman sitting on a bomb, and the woman is his wife, on shoulder.

Bill Garrison Pastor for Babtist Church. Has youth group he brings to Wal-Mart weekly to buy clothes for the poor. He is a reformed criminal. He spent his youth stealing from Wal-Mart.

Has a tattoo of a cross on the back of his neck. Muscular body. Tight black button-up shirt with white collar. African-American. Sleek black belt with black business pants, black shiny shoes. Gold cross on necklace.

ANDY SULLIVAN

On the run from the cops. Killed a friend over drugs in Alabama. Never married, spent times in strip clubs. He is a sociopath. His mom killed herself because his dad was so abusive. Has OCD.

Well-dressed. Orange-blue plaid shirt tucked in. Jeans, black boots. Brass belt buckle with a fish on it. Aligator belt. Trimmed black goatee, black hair. Haggard complexion. Wears glasses.

SUSAN MILHOUSE

Went to University of Kansas. Professional Runner. At Wal-Mart to pick out running shoes. She comes from a Mormon family. She enjoys outdoor climbing and travel/adventure. Climbed Mt. Everest at age 21.

Wears her hair in a braid going down back. Wears a visor.

JACKIE HUDSON

Geography student attending MIT. Came to Kansas because of small fluctuations in satellite images of Kansas over the past decade. At Wal-Mart buying food.
