The ADTRAN’s Total Access Network Interface Unit (T1 NIU) serves as an interface between a T1 metallic span and the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). Providing standard maintenance loop- back plus collection and reporting of DS1 performance statistics, the T1 NIU enables service providers to respond proactively to facil- ity performance degradation, thereby improving the availability of Hi-Cap T1 circuits. The NIU provides a front panel that is half the width of the standard 400 mechanics-style NIU and makes electri- cal connections to the facility and CPE sides of the circuit through a 56-pin card-edge connector on the mounting assembly, using industry-standard pin assignments. The T1 NIU is used to terminate T1 metallic span facilities from either a TA 3000 or TA 3010 multiservice access platform using the T1-OR in one of its slots. Each application mode has a unique set of provisionable options. The T1 NIU can be provisioned either from the T1 OR in the Total Access chassis or locally via a VT 100 terminal connected to the RS-232 DB9 connector on the front of the unit. The T1 NIU is situated at the customer's premises and functions as a maintenance interface between the T1 metallic span and the CPE. In addition to conventional NIU functions such as loopback, the NIU collects performance data for both directions of the facility, stores the information, and reports it to the remote test center either on demand or on a real-time basis. This performance infor- mation can also be locally accessed via the front-panel RS-232 craft interface port. Flexible DS1 performance reporting options include (1) local, non-intrusive access to PM parameters via a front-panel local craft interface port, (2) remote, intrusive access during loopback to PM parameters via TL1 commands and responses in the ESF Data Link, (3) remote, non-intrusive access to PM parameters via TL1 com- mands and responses in the Data Link without affecting customer payload, and (4) remote, non-intrusive real-time reporting of PM parameters via 1-second NPRM reports in the Data Link per ANSI T1.403-1997. Other features include a selectable powering option for span or local power; front-panel test points for measuring span current; bridging-type bantam jacks on RCV and XMT ports for transmission path monitoring; a front-panel craft interface port (serial RS-232, VT-100) for local PM extraction, unit set-up and maintenance; and remote provisioning and query of all options. When used in con- junction with a pair of T1 ORs in a Total Access chassis, a pair of T1 NIUs in the ADTRAN Loop Support System Housing (1245034L2) provides a protected circuit to the customer.
